SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Association of Governments will debate Wednesday the best way to get people to the airport. Four possible plans involving public transportation are involved. One would create a central terminal on Navy property near Old Town and tunnel under the airport with a people mover. Two other proposals would involve a terminal, but use an elevated people mover. The fourth option would extend the trolley, adding tracks along Harbor Drive. Dorene Robertson said the predictability of public transportation would be a benefit. “I know the shuttle's not going to get in a car accident, I know I'm going to get here when I plan to get here, I'm not going to get stuck on the freeway and not get here. So it takes away the uncertainty of getting to the airport on time,” said Robertson. Alex Santos, who typically relies on Uber to reach the airport, says he would only use public transportation if it was direct. “If it was dropping me off in front of my house or a townhome I live in, or a block away, that'd be perfect.” The SANDAG plans would cost anywhere from .8 billion to .7 billion dollars. They would serve as many as 44,000 people per day by 2050 and decrease traffic on Harbor Drive as much as 35 percent. City of San Diego and U.S. Navy officials signed an agreement last week to revamp the Navy complex near Old Town with the central terminal as a possibility for the project. 1424

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The world's only two platypuses to live outside of Australia now call the San Diego Zoo Safari Park home.The zoo recently received the two platypuses — a male named Birrarung that hatched in 2011 and female named Eve that hatched in 2004 — from Taronga Zoo Sydney. In San Diego, the zoo says they will be ambassadors for the species outside of their native Australia and advocate the "importance of freshwater for both humans and wildlife."Australian conservationists have been working to determine the status of the animal in the wild using environmental DNA, or trace DNA found in their habitats.“Overall, platypuses were detected at 38 percent of sites sampled in Victoria and 32 percent of those in New South Wales,” said Josh Griffiths, a senior wildlife ecologist. “Although it is still too early to draw many conclusions from this raw data, some trends are emerging. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The pinch of the partial shutdown on federal government agencies and employees approached a squeeze Wednesday as workers prepared for their first pay period without a paycheck. Hundreds of thousands of federal employees who are furloughed or working without pay during the government shutdown are anticipating an end to the political standoff. The partial shutdown, which took effect Dec. 21, forced 420,000 workers to continue their jobs without pay. 380,000 workers were furloughed nationwide. 5,000 of the affected workers are in San Diego County, according to Rep. Scott Peters' office, which cited the Association of Federal Government Workers. Border Patrol agents enforcing the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County are among the affected employees. So are TSA agents, including those who kept holiday travelers safe at Lindbergh Field. Dozens of national parks and museums, including Smithsonian facilities, closed Wednesday as they ran out of money. Yosemite National Park limited entry due to problems with human waste and public safety. Visitors were told to use restrooms in nearby communities before entering the park. The Coast Guard is scaling back boating safety checks, mariner licensing, and fishing law enforcement, according to Politico. Tax filing season, which usually starts in January, may start later, and many IRS workers may be called to work without pay for filing season. The most recent pay period ended Dec. 22, with paychecks arriving Dec. 28. The next pay period ends Jan. 5, with the check due Jan. 11. There’s a possibility that check may never come. Workers may be paid retroactively but it would take an act of Congress. To make the financial picture even more grim for federal employees, President Trump issued an executive order Friday, freezing their pay for 2019. Their 2.1 percent hike was supposed to take effect this month.
