SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - You probably don't know Encinitas resident Carol Areas, but you may have seen her words of encouragement scattered thorough San Diego. Ten years ago, she and her son began writing positive messages on rocks and leaving them around the city. Now they receive messages of people making their own rocks around the world. When Areas learned her son had Asperger's, she was compelled to start a new project, the Love it Forward List. "I felt the need to connect with people, to receive love, to know people are caring," said Areas. Whenever she hears someone is going through a hard time, she rally's volunteers to send them some love. "Five years now writing snail mails! I love that!" said Areas. So when she learned about 5-year-old Noah Avery and his 7-year-old sister Kalea, she called on her army of comfort warriors. "The moment I heard about this story, I thought we had to do a campaign for them," said Areas. In June of 2018, Kalea was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor. "Thirteen days after we were told our daughter had a brain tumor, we were told our son Noah had a brain tumor," recalls their mother, Nohea Avery. There are only a handful of cases known of siblings being diagnosed with this cancer, doctors say. And Nohea says her doctors don't know any cases of siblings being diagnosed at the same time. "To have two, you kind of just, you go into survival mode. I always tell people well, we don't have a choice. You wake up every day, and you show up for them every day, and you kind of just, one foot in front of another," said Nohea. This summer, both kids were in remission, but then doctors found a small tumor in Noah's brain. They're traveling to Rady Children's Hospital each week from Los Angeles for proton radiation. But Nohea says throughout every challenge, complete strangers like Areas have shown up along the way. "It's encouraging, and it motivates us, especially on those days that are really hard, because there are days that are really, really hard, it just makes it a little easier."Areas asks the community to send words of encouragement to the family or to send something through the Amazon Wishlist she created. If you'd like to send a card to the family, email Areas at loveitforwardlist@gmail.comYou can also donate to the family's Go Fund Me here. 2333

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As elections are quickly approaching, a San Diego man is expressing concerns after discovering what appeared to be undelivered mail ballots and voter guides in City Heights.“I was out walking the dogs, and I found this stack of voter ballots; it was mixed in with ballot envelopes and voter guides,” said Jeremy Alaynick. “Just kept finding them the more I walked.”He sent ABC10News pictures that appeared to show a combination of approximately two dozen unvoted ballots and sample ballot/voter information pamphlets.Alaynick, a professional dog walker, said he did not report the incident immediately because he was walking dogs for a client.“I would have picked them all up and taken them to the post office, but I’m thinking about the dogs, and that just wasn’t running through my mind at that moment,” he said.He was working to report the incident Wednesday.Registrar of Voters, Michael Vu, tells ABC 10News, situations like this are uncommon, and investigations are launched as soon as his office is aware.“What we generally do is we touch base with the US Postal Service. It would have been great to receive this information at the time rather than a week later, particularly for those respective voters but also for us to be able to manage it,” he said.Vu said if voters have concerns or haven’t received their ballots by mail, options are available.“We are tracking every single one of these ballots, so when a voter says they have not received their mail ballot, we have the ability to suspend that ballot and reissue them another one,” he said. “If there are voted mail ballots that come back to our office, we compare the signature off of the envelope against the signature on file. So every single one of these is validated.”If you are voting by mail, Vu recommends tracking your ballot here.“Voters themselves, they have the ability to track their mail ballot as it’s traveling to them or traveling back to us after they voted,” he said.If you across a situation like this, Vu said to report it to his office right away.A spokesperson for the United States Postal Inspection Service tells ABC 10News they cannot comment on this matter. 2174

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation officers arrested 20 illegal immigrants during a five-day sting, officials reported Friday. The operation, which wrapped up Thursday, was focused on immigrants with a final removal order, criminal convictions, or criminal charges. ICE did not provide details about the locations of the arrests or the names of those targeted.ICE officials said 85 percent of those arrested had prior convictions or charges including drugs, weapons offenses, hit and run crashes, DUI, theft, domestic violence, fraud, and evasion. “Targeted operations like this reflect the vital public service that ERO officers do every day to protect the nation, uphold public safety and protect the integrity of our immigration laws and border control,” said Field Office Director Gregory Archambeault. “We will continue to conduct similar operations, while seeking to ultimately remove criminal aliens with a final order of removal and other immigration fugitives who pose a threat to public safety.” The primary targets of the operation will be removed from the United States, ICE officials said.Enforcement response officers arrested 158,581 immigrants in fiscal year 2018, according to ICE. 90 percent of those arrested had criminal convictions, charges, or previous final orders of removal. 1350

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- USO San Diego received a 0,000 grant that has expanded several food and nutrition programs to support military families across the country who have been impacted by the pandemic. The gift was provided by The San Diego Foundation COVID-19 Community Response Fund, in large part due to funding from San Diego Gas and Electric, said the non-profit in a release."Immediately following the stay-at-home order in our county, USO San Diego recognized the importance of sustaining our food distributions," said Ashley Camac, USO San Diego's Executive Director. "We wanted our military families to be confident the resources they depended upon would remain accessible."The resources mentioned include grab-and-go bags of non-perishable items, a Thanksgiving meal kit giveaway, mobile farmers markets, and healthy breakfast options for military children participating in distance learning.Currently, SDG&E has donated .5 million to the San Diego Foundation COVID-19 Community Response Fund. The utility company plans to contribute an additional 0, 000 in early 2021."Even without factoring in the impacts of the pandemic, military families face many stressors related to deployment and make great sacrifices to serve our country," said Eugene "Mitch" Mitchell, SDG&E's vice president of state governmental and external affairs. "Food insecurity is the last thing they should have to fear."Since the pandemic, San Diego USO has served over 200,000 military members and their families. 1517
