SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The mother of a San Diego middle school student is begging for more answers from school administrators after she says other students threatened to shoot and stab her son. “I’m not willing to play Russian roulette with my kid’s life,” states Vanessa Flores. In a 10News exclusive, we interviewed her and her thirteen year-old son, Daniel, at their home on Tuesday. She says she pulled Daniel out of downtown’s KIPP Adelante charter middle school on Tuesday morning. It was two weeks ago when Daniel says he got in a fight with a couple of students. He says over their lunch break they were saying, “What are we going to do with Daniel? Are we going to jump him? Let’s jump him. Let’s bring the gun.” Daniel tells us he them heard one of them add, “The gun’s too much. Let’s bring the knife.” Vanessa showed us text messages that she says she exchanged with the school’s principal the night of the incident. She says she later met with administrators. “I just wanted the authorities to be contacted and made aware of the situation,” she adds. For days, she says her family could not get clear answers about any action the school was taking.  With tears in his eyes, Daniel described for us the anxiety he felt in the school hallways in the days following the alleged threats. “I’d think, what’s the next move? What are they going to do to me when I pass by the hallway? What do they have or what are they hiding?” “I’ve told [the school] that I’m in fear with the climate right now with all these shootings. Everybody’s talking about red flags. I’m giving [the school] the red flags on a silver platter. Please help me,” says Vanessa. On Tuesday, she says she picked Daniel up the from school after getting confirmation from school administrators that KIPP Adelante would not get the San Diego Police Department involved. She tells us she no longer felt safe keeping him on that campus. After picking him up from school, she says she took him to the San Diego Police Department to try to file a report. San Diego Police confirm with 10News that there was a misunderstanding that she was referring to a charter school and not a regular San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) public school. She says SDPD sent her to SDUSD school police, which don’t handle investigations related to local charter schools. The SDUSD school police apparently sent her back to SDPD. SDPD confirms its officers took a report on Tuesday afternoon and now the juvenile service team is investigating the reported threats. On Tuesday afternoon, KIPP Adelante charter school principal Monique McKeown sent us the following statement. “Two weeks ago, we had an 8th grade student report that two of his classmates threatened to harm him with a weapon. We fully investigated the matter and found no credible evidence that the students in question threatened to use a weapon against their classmate. San Diego Unified Police Services confirmed that we handled the investigation appropriately. At KIPP we respond swiftly to all potential threats to student safety.” The referenced "San Diego Unified Police Services" is also known as SDUSD school police. A spokesperson for KIPP Adelante later clarified that SDUSD school police did not conduct its own investigation. Rather, it apparently reviewed and approved the school’s own investigation. The spokesperson for KIPP Adelante also reported that the teens who made the apparent threats are still students at the school. 3559

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The cities of Escondido and La Mesa are taking measures to help restaurants expand outdoor dining after a rollback of indoor dining in the county due to surging coronavirus cases.Starting Friday, Escondido will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction on Grand Avenue, between Maple Street and Juniper St., to allow restaurants to expand temporary outdoor seating. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Food and Drug Administration has released new guidelines to vaccine makers with added safety measures that experts say will push back the timeline, making the release of a COVID-19 vaccine before the election highly unlikely.The guidelines lay out what it will take for companies to secure a fast-tracked authorization for a vaccine, known as an emergency use authorization or EUA.The new guidelines require vaccine makers to follow the volunteers in their clinical trials for a median of two months after their final dose.It’s an important step to see if anyone has a bad reaction, says Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego.“Some of the safety issues that people like me are concerned about might take months actually to develop,” Dr. Ramers said. “My analysis of this is that it's the FDA standing up and saying, ‘We're going to adhere to our rigorous scientific process.’”The White House had resisted the new guidelines from the FDA for more than two weeks. After their release, President Trump described them as a “political hit job.”“New FDA Rules make it more difficult for them to speed up vaccines for approval before Election Day. Just another political hit job!” the president wrote on Twitter Tuesday night.It’s hard to gauge exactly how the two-month buffer affect the vaccine timeline because clinical trials do not start all at once; volunteers are enrolled on a rolling basis. But Dr. Sydney Wolfe of the consumer group Public Citizen said the drug makers have offered clues.“The companies one-by-one are saying, ‘We can’t get anything in until the end of November or the end of December or the beginning of January,’ and that’s a relief,” he said.In a clinical trial, half of the volunteers get the vaccine and half get a fake drug called a placebo.The updated guidelines require companies to have an estimated effectiveness of at least 50 percent, meaning there are 50 percent fewer cases of infection in the group receiving the vaccine compared to the placebo group.The guidelines also instruct companies to have a plan to continue collecting data in their clinical trial even after they get an EUA and the vaccine hits the market.“The worst thing that could happen here is something meets that minimum bar of 50% efficacy, meaning it works pretty well, but then the bottom just falls out from these clinical trials and we don't get the information we need,” he said.Dr. Ramers was initially skeptical of fast-tracking a vaccine with an EUA rather than waiting for full approval since it’s only been done once before, but he’s supportive of the process under the updated guidelines.“I think that's the best way to balance speed and safety,” he said.Still, experts like Dr. Wolfe think going with an EUA over a full approval could backfire. He points out the new guidelines allow up to half of the people in the clinical trial to be tracked for less than two months after their final dose.“All things aren’t equal [between an EUA and full approval] because you don’t have all the information and B, people know that,” he said.Dr. Wolfe is concerned the public will be reluctant to roll up their sleeves and embrace the vaccine if it just has an emergency authorization. Now that the FDA has made the EUA guidelines more rigorous, he thinks waiting for full approval might take just a few more months.The FDA’s new guidance notes that an Oct. 22 meeting of its Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee will not be to discuss specific vaccine candidates.Trump previously said he would consider overruling the FDA on its vaccine guidelines in hopes of speeding up the process. There is both health and economic pressure for a vaccine to be developed as the coronavirus continues to claim an average of 800 US lives a day, according to Johns Hopkins University data.However, Dr. Wolfe said the possibility of the president overruling the FDA is unlikely to have an impact now because the vaccine developers themselves have indicated they will follow the FDA guidelines.Additional reporting by Justin Boggs 4090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Fleet Science Center is offering a program that helps San Diego students navigate their way through any challenges they face while distance learning.Participating students will have to go through a health screening before entering the building at Balboa Park.Once inside, classrooms are transformed into individual hubs. Students each have a workspace where they use their own electronic device to connect to their distance learning classrooms. Educators are there helping with any issues that may come up.Andia Pebdani, the Youth Engagement Manager for the Fleet Science Center, said the idea of the hubs came from families who needed help juggling the work life with schools being closed.“Some families don’t have the option at home, or it’s like, ‘I needed to do this so I can do my job, but I can also make sure my student is on the computer,’” said Pebdani.During breaks, educators work on different science activities with the kids or they get tours of different parts of their museum since their doors are still closed to the public.The cost for this program is 0-0 a week depending on whether you have a membership with the center.
