ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union (AU) Ramtane Lamamra, and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Ethiopia Gu Xiaojie on Friday signed an agreement on the provision of aid to the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).The grant amounting to 30 million RMB, (over 4 million U.S. dollars), will be used to supply equipment and materials for AMISOM. The signing of this agreement comes in the wake of the adoption by the United Nations Security Council, on Dec. 22, of resolution 1964(2010), in which it, inter alia, requested the Secretary- General to continue to provide a logistical support package for AMISOM, for a maximum troop strength of 12,000, as called for by resolution 1863 (2009).In resolution 1964(2010), the Security Council also called on UN Member States and regional and international organizations to make direct bilateral donations in support of AMISOM.By generously providing aid to AMISOM, the People's Republic of China is responding to the call made by the United Nations Security Council and the earlier appeal by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) for AU partners to support the ongoing efforts in Somalia, AU said in a statement. Gu Xiaojie reiterated China's continued commitment to strengthen its cooperation with the AU in the area of peace and security and to support all endeavors in this regard. He lauded AU's efforts and resolve towards the promotion of peace, security and reconciliation in Somalia.Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Lamamra stated said that "China has, over the years, been providing multifaceted assistance to the AU and African countries as they strive to address the many challenges facing the continent. Today's donation is a further testimony of China's commitment and its determination to contribute to the furtherance of peace and security in the continent".Furthermore, Commissioner Lamamra avails himself of this opportunity to renew the appeal to all AU partners to provide the requisite support to AMISOM as it enters a new phase of its deployment.

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday urged Israel and Palestine to stay on the path of peace talks and take constructive moves to advance their stalled peace talks.Wen made the appeal in a message to the Conference in Commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was held Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.Offering warm congratulations for the event on behalf of the Chinese government, Wen stressed that the Palestinian issue is at the core of the Middle East issue.The Chinese government has all along firmly supported the Palestinian people's just cause of restoring their legitimate national rights, and the efforts to continuously push the Middle East peace process forward, Wen said.The talks between Israel and Palestine have now reached a pivotal stage, he said, voicing the hope that both sides will stay on the track,take positive and constructive efforts, avoid any disturbance of the talks, cooperate with international mediation efforts, and constantly promote the negotiation process.He expressed the hope that on the basis of related UN resolutions and the "land-for-peace" principle, an independent Palestinian State with full sovereignty will be established and the peaceful coexistence of Israel and the Palestinian State will be achieved.An early settlement of the Palestinian issue is the expectation shared by all Middle East countries and peoples and the international community, Wen said.As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will as always support the United Nations in playing a vital role on the Middle East issue, he said.He added that China, along with the international community, will continue to make unremitting efforts to seek a just solution to the Palestinian issue and promote peace, stability and development in the Middle East.The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in 1977 designating Nov. 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. BEIJING, Dec.25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese vice premier Li Keqiang said that China's tax officials should continue to promote reform in the tax system and improve services to contribute to the country's economic development and social harmony.Li made the remarks in a written instruction to a recently-held national conference on taxation, which coordinated next year's working plans for the tax administration system.Li called on tax officials to further enact structural tax reductions, promote tax reforms, strengthen tax collections and management and improve services for taxpayers.Chinese tax officials should work to allow taxation to play a more important role in the transformation of economic development patterns, adjust income distribution and improve people's livelihoods, Li said.

BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) - China's urbanization would boost domestic demand by 30 trillion yuan (4.5 trillion U.S. dollars) by 2030, an official from a top think tank said Saturday.The country's urbanization expansion promises a huge potential in domestic demand, which will assure a stable economic development for China even if exports decline, Han Jun, vice director with the State Council's Development Research Center (SCDRC), said at a forum, adding that the urban migrants' demand for housing is likely to become the largest driving force for China's economic growth in the future.Additionally, Han noted that the core issue in China's urbanization is to allow farmers-turned-migrant workers to become permanent urban residents.In the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's Proposal for Formulating the 12th Five-Year Program for China's Economic and Social Development (2011-2015), which was issued last month, authorities stressed that accelerating urbanization would be an important mission during the next five years.Data from the SCDRC indicates that China's urbanization rate hit 46 percent by the end of 2009, and will reach 63.6 percent by 2030, with the urban population standing at 930 million.
