As we head into college football and NFL season, fans across the country will now be able to do something for the first time: legally bet on games. Indiana is the latest state making it a reality on Sunday, and there are more places following suit. Lou’s City Bar in Washington, D.C. is getting ready for a busy weekend as football season gets underway. Manager Mark Helliwell is working on a new way to bring in more customers: legal sports betting.“We’re trying to do everything we can to create interest,” he says. “If we can turn this place into a little Caesar’s Palace on Saturday and Sundays so people don’t have go to Vegas.”He applied for a license that will allow customers to bet on games inside his bar and just posted the permit.“Put it up last night and has to stay up for 30 days before our hearing,” he explains. “Our hearing’s in October.”Legalized sports betting is quickly moving across the country. In addition to D.C., several other states either already have sports betting or it will become legal when new laws take effect over the next several months.“Right now, there are only eight states that haven’t either legalized sports gambling or don’t have a bill to legalize sports gambling,” says attorney George Calhoun. Calhoun is one of the attorneys who helped convince the US Supreme Court last year to allow states other than Nevada to legalize sports betting, which he says will help protect gamblers.“They know they’re doing something that’s legal, they’re gonna get the protection,” Calhoun says. “If they have a problem, they’re gonna have access to the courts and law enforcement and they’re gonna have certainty if they win a bet they’re gonna get paid.”According to the American Gaming Association, in the states that now allow sports betting, gamblers have wagered more than billion since it became legal. 1855

Businesswoman and "Shark Tank" personality Barbara Corcoran said she is "overwhelmed with sadness" over the loss of both her brother and all of the others who have died in the Dominican Republic in recent months.Her brother, John, died in his hotel room in the Dominican Republic in April, Corcoran said in a statement Thursday."He loved the DR and vacationed there frequently. My brother had an existing heart condition and we believe he died of natural causes, but you're still never ready for the death of a loved one," Corcoran said in a post on Instagram.Corcoran and John were from a family with 10 children, a childhood the TV personality lauded on her social media before her brother's death. 712

An inmate was mistakenly released from the troubled Cuyahoga County Jail last week, in spite of the inmate telling jailers that he wasn’t supposed to be released.Not only did that inmate tell at least one jailer he was supposed to stay locked up, Administrative Judge John Russo said he also called a judge's bailiff and let him know about the mistake too.The confusion that led the jail to mistakenly release Fransisco Cruz appears to once again stem from an inmate with multiple cases in the system at the same time.Court records show Cruz was sentenced to 18 months in prison in October 2017 on domestic violence, drug, escape and theft charges.Nine months later, in July 2018, Cruz was released from prison and put into a transitional control program, a type of supervised release.While out, Cruz was arrested again on drug charges in May of this year and put back behind bars to finish his sentence. That prison sentence ended on October 2.The same day, Cruz was sentenced on the May drug charge.Judge Peter Corrigan ordered Cruz spend time in a substance abuse facility and ordered the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department to take him there.What happened next is still something jail administrators are trying to figure out.A spokeswoman said the state notified the jail that Cruz's sentence was over. He was released Friday and told to report to his parole officer.That’s when Cruz told a jailer they were supposed to take him to inpatient treatment, Russo told News 5 investigators. But that didn't happen.Cruz then called Corrigan's courtroom to tell the judge what happened, Russo said. A bailiff called the treatment center, but they said they could only take Cruz if the sheriff's department brought him.The county said the 36-year-old was taken back into custody yesterday when he showed up to meet his parole officer.This is at least the fourth mistaken release from the jail since spring. There are a lot of stray animals that are dumped in this area," animal control officer Bradi Jamison says. “I had never realized how many stray animals there were in Houston until I started working this job."Jamison starts her job early in the morning to catch stray dogs, before it's too hot.When sweeping an area like the "cruelty corridor," Jamison says she and her team can pick up around 30 animals per day."It is awful. Most of them are not strays," she says. It's the owners allowing their dogs to be unleashed and roam loose."Homeless pets are a national problem. According to the 823
