SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego lifeguards and firefighters Sunday rescued a surfer who suffered a medical emergency while in the water in the Bird Rock area, authorities said.At 12:36 p.m., lifeguards and firefighters from the San Diego Fire- Rescue Department responded to the cliffs near Calumet Park about a surfer experiencing an unknown medical emergency, Lt. Andy Lerum of Lifeguard Services said.The man in his 60s experienced a possible heart-related ailment or seizure, but rescuers were not sure of the exact nature of his medical emergency, Lerum said.The man swam to the beach, where he collapsed and lifeguards began tending to him, the lieutenant said. He was taken by stretcher about 30 yards to the bottom of the cliff.Firefighters used the department's Rescue 44 truck, equipped with a crane, to lift the surfer from the beach to the top of the cliff, Lerum said. An ambulance then took the man to a La Jolla hospital for evaluation. He was reportedly in stable condition. 995

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 320 new COVID-19 infections and four more deaths from the illness, raising the county's totals to 50,143 cases, a milestone for the region, and 825 fatalities.Two women and two men died, and their ages ranged from early to late 60s. Three had underlying medical conditions.Of the 11,371 tests reported Friday, 3% returned positive, bringing the 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases to 2.8%. The seven-day daily average of tests was 10,127.Of the total number of cases in the county, 3,670 -- or 7.3% -- have required hospitalization and 849 -- or 1.7% of all cases -- had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.Four community outbreaks were reported Friday, two in businesses and two in restaurant/bar settings.In the past seven days, Oct. 3 through Oct. 9, 38 community outbreaks were confirmed, well above the trigger of seven or more in a week's time. A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.The county remains in the second -- or red -- tier of the state's four- tier COVID-19 reopening plan. San Diego's state-calculated, adjusted case rate is 6.5 per 100,000 residents, down from 6.7. SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Petco Park in San Diego will play host to an American League divisional playoff series and the American League Championship series next month under a schedule announced Tuesday that will culminate with Major League Baseball's first neutral-site World Series, played in Arlington, Texas.The playoff tournament schedule was formulated in response to the coronavirus pandemic, with an eye toward the "bubble" concept employed by the NBA and NHL aimed at ensuring limited outside interaction with players.Under the schedule, the San Diego Padres’ home ballpark will host a best-of-five American League Division Series starting Oct. 6. Attached property sales rose 8.8 percent from 820 in September to 892 in October.The increases are a minor rebound after SDAR data showed sales of single-family homes and attached properties fell 25 percent from August to September.Monthly home prices dipped slightly for both single-family and attached properties. Single-family prices fell 0.4 percent from 7,000 to 5,000 while condo and townhome prices fell 2.7 percent from 9,000 to 8,000."The temperature of home prices seems to be cooling, which may lead to a period of calm for the rest of the year," SDAR President Steve Fraioli said. "However, the strength of the economy and the strong job market remains great news for buyers and industries related to real estate."Year-over-year increases show significant declines in listings sold and increases in home prices. Single-family home sales fell 16.8 percent from October 2017 to October 2018, from 1,977 to 1,644. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,867 new COVID-19 infections, a new record, eclipsing the previous one of 2,287 last Friday by nearly 800 cases, marking more than 100,000 total cases in the county since the pandemic began.Friday marked the third consecutive day more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 11th day with more than 1,000 new cases and the 19th of the last 22 to reach that mark. It is just the fifth time the daily cases have crossed 2,000 -- all of which have come in the past week.The data released Friday, along with 23 deaths, raises the region's cumulative totals to 102,466 confirmed infections and 1,137 deaths.Of 25,002 tests reported Friday, 11 percent returned positive, raising the 14-day average of new cases to 8% -- a record.The number of hospitalizations continued to rise, with 38 people hospitalized and four patients put in intensive care units. The COVID-19- related hospitalizations increased to 965 -- 249 in ICUs. Since the pandemic began, 5,064 or 4.9% of cases have been hospitalized due to coronavirus, 1,098, or 1.1% have been sent to the ICU.The county's hospitals still have 18% of their ICU beds available, down from 21% Thursday. The state now estimates the ICU bed availability in the 11-county Southern California region at 6.2%, down from 7.7% on Thursday.Of the 4,627 people hospitalized in the county, 20% are due to COVID- 19, and 44% of ICU patients.
