SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — A photo of a Cal State San Marcos graduate is going viral. It shows 29-year-old Erica Alfaro in her cap and gown, standing with her parents, in the middle of a strawberry field in Carlsbad.Her educational journey was anything but easy. “I was a teenage mom,” Alfaro said. She was 15 and pregnant, and became a mother at 16. Alfaro said she dropped out of high school and was stuck in an abusive relationship.“My baby’s father forced me to sleep outside with my baby,” Alfaro said. “That is the night I decided to go back to school.”She left Fresno and returned home to Oceanside. It was then that she remembered a moment from when she was 13-years-old.“My mom took me to work with her in the tomato fields,” Alfaro said. “And I remember she told me, ‘This is our life. The only people who have a good life are the people who have a good education.’”Alfaro was born in Fresno but spent most of her elementary years in Tijuana, Mexico. When she was 13, she and her family moved to Oceanside. Her parents got jobs as farm workers. They never received a formal education. “They don’t know how to read or write,” Alfaro said. All the signs pointed toward her repeating that cycle. But Alfaro was not going to let that happen. “I did it for my son,” she said. Little Luis inspired her to finished high school through homeschool, and enroll in Junior College. The next step was Cal State San Marcos. Statistics show that only 2 percent of teen mothers finish college by the age of 30. But Alfaro pushed forward. “At first I thought I was being unrealistic, but I just started to keep going,” she said. But in 2012, Alfaro got a diagnosis that changed her life once again. “My son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy,” she said. The depression overcame her, and she dropped out of college. But again, she remembered that day at the tomato fields. “I had so many excuses to give up. But giving up was never an option,” Alfaro said. Five years later, she earned her bachelor's degree at CSU San Marcos. On Sunday, as if she has not accomplished enough, Alfaro will receive a Masters in Education from San Diego State University. She hopes to inspire students and her now 13-year-old son, to never give up. “My son represents a new generation,” Alfaro said. “He will have a better future. He will have more opportunities, and I will be there to tell him that it is possible. That he belongs. All those things I never heard myself.” 2454

(KGTV) -- Kelley Keatly and her husband were walking in their San Marcos neighborhood Wednesday morning when something caught their attention.They noticed a red sticker stuck to an electrical box. When they looked closer, they saw a message of hate, one that read: “The symbol of white resistance.”The sticker included a link to a website filled with hatred - towards Jews, African Americans, and the LGBTQ community.ABC 10News is not identifying the group.“Really I just see it as an act of pure evil, and it has no place in my community, it has no place in any community,” Keatly said.Keatly took the sticker and posted an image of it on a neighborhood Facebook page. Melissa Burgess saw the post and then found four - on electric boxes and traffic lights, including ones near San Elijo Elementary and Middle schools, where her children attend.“I came home, I was shaking just from anger and pain and hurt and just all of that from having seen that here in my community,” she said.Then, even more neighbors found the stickers, including on the back of Stop signs.The stickers come after a recent spate of hate-inspired incidents in the county, including people wearing swastika face masks to grocery stores, and another driving with a Nazi flag.Tammy Gillies, who heads the San Diego Anti-Defamation League, says it’s vital to report all incidents.“You have one person that can be radicalized on the Internet, one person that is drawn to look at a website through these fliers or these stickers and goes down a wrong path, so it is very concerning,” Gillies said.She alluded to last year's deadly shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue, allegedly carried out by a 19-year-old radicalized online.The Sheriff's Department says a total of seven stickers were located. Security experts are clarifying what you should know about the hack against the U.S.Last week, federal authorities warned of the breach in government and private computer systems. It's suspected that Russian attackers were behind it.Some members of Congress have voiced concerns that taxpayers' information could be exposed through the treasury department. But one expert tells us that isn't really valuable to these attackers.“The breach over the last week is much more geared towards nation state secrets, manufacturing secrets, supply chain secrets, you know different intellectual property, than it is personal information,” said Randy Watkins, Chief Technology Officer at CriticalStart.Watkins says the average person likely won't see any immediate impact, but with policy information and military strategies at risk, there could be downstream ramifications.Federal authorities say the hackers primarily got in through software called solar winds that some agencies use.Watkins says that means we need to look more at how we measure security for third party vendors.“A lot of times, the attackers don't need to go directly after the treasury department or the department of defense. Those are very locked down networks, but they can go after the third parties that do business and have connections into those environments, and that's what they did in this scenario.”Officials say this hack could have started as early as last March.Watkins says the type of tech they used is hard to catch, allowing attackers time to patiently collect data under the radar.That means working on detection methods will also be key moving forward. 1641

SAN YSIDRO (KGTV) - Two people were critically injured in a car crash Sunday night after a driver sped through the Port of Entry. The crash happened around 10:15 p.m. on Dairy Mart Road near Interstate 5. According to police, a driver in a Chevrolet Silverado drove through the port of entry without stopping before crashing head-on into a Mitsubishi Lancer. One person was in the truck and another in the car at the time of the crash. Both were critically injured. The California Highway Patrol later confirmed to 10News that the driver of the truck is suspected of driving under the influence. 604
