NEW YORK (AP) — Century 21 Stores, a destination for bargain hunters looking for fat deals on designer dresses and shoes for nearly 60 years, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.The retail chain says it’s winding down its business, including all 13 stores across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida.Century 21 joins more than two dozen retailers who have filed for bankruptcy since the pandemic which forced non-essential stores to temporarily close.Century 21 said that the decision followed nonpayment by the company’s insurance providers of about 5 million due under policies put in place to protect against losses stemming from business interruption.That insurance money helped it rebuild its downtown Manhattan flagship store after it was damaged by the 9/11 attacks. 794

NEW YORK -- Lori Gaeta gets a cup of coffee every day at a cafe on Lexington Avenue in New York City.Last week, she got a cup coffee and started a conversation with a homeless man that changed both of their lives.Gaeta says she met the homeless man, named William, on 61st Street. It was a conservation she couldn't get out of her mind.“He was paralyzed in a broken down wheelchair. I just felt he could use a blessing,” said Gaeta.All she knew about him is he is 61 years old and his name is William, he became paralyzed and is now homeless.She noticed his wheelchair was being held together with duct tape and was falling apart. She asked him if it was alright for her to get him a new chair.Gaeta sprung into action and started an online quest asking for help posting on a site called Nextdoor. Generous New Yorkers immediately came forward offering used chairs.Then a total stranger, named Elizabeth Menegan, offered to buy William a new chair, spending over 0.“You know that saying it takes a village to raise a child? Well, this took an entire neighborhood to bless this man. NEW YORK -- A Bronx man is facing murder charges after his mother was found dead in their apartment early Wednesday, according to the NYPD.Police say Carmen Aponte, 66, was discovered by her adult daughter around 1:30 a.m. when she came home to the family's apartment on Seneca Avenue, near Faile Street in the Hunts Point section.Responding officers say they found the woman unconscious in her bed with injuries to her head. EMS responded and pronounced the mother dead at the scene.Later Wednesday, police announced Aponte's adult son was arrested in connection with her death.Police believe Steven Castro, 40, struck his mother in the head with an object during a "jealous rage."It was not immediately clear what the object was or what sparked the man's rage.Castro is now facing charges including murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom at WPIX. 949
