It is expected to produce 6 million tonnes of coal annually once in operation.Earlier this month, 32 workers were killed in a similar accident when underground water flooded a mine being built in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.One worker died after being lifted to the ground and 31 others were presumed dead two weeks after the accident happened on March 1.Rescue work, which took 14 days and involved 20,384 people, was halted on March 14 when those trapped were believed to have no chance of survival.

About 1,000 Mahayana Buddhist monks attended the prayer session at Beijing's Guangji Temple led by Chuanyin, the BAC president, while the 11th Panchen Lama, the association's vice president, hosted another prayer session at the Lama Temple, an important Tibetan Buddhist temple in Beijing. In southwestern Yunnan Province, monks of Hinayana Buddhism gathered at the Zongfo Temple to pray. Other important temples in Shanxi, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Lhasa also held prayer rituals at the same time. The monks prayed for the victims' souls and for the survivors to overcome the hardships caused by the disaster. Xuecheng, BAC vice president and secretary general, presided over the prayer ritual at the Gyegu Monastery, the main temple in quake-hit Yushu. BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua)-- China's trade balance turned red in March with the country's first monthly trade deficit in six years, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said Saturday.China exports were valued at 112.11 billion U.S. dollars in March, up 24.3 percent year on year, while the imports surged 66 percent to 119.35 billion U.S. dollars, resulting in a deficit of 7.24 billion U.S. dollars.The deficit was China's first since it posted a 2.26 billion deficit in April 2004, according to a report released by the GAC.China's total foreign trade rose 42.8 percent year on year to 231.46 billion U.S. dollars in March, according to Customs statistics.In the first quarter, foreign trade rose 44.1 percent to 617.85 billion U.S. dollars, with a surplus of 14.49 billion U.S. dollars though it was down 76.7 percent from the same period of last year.The country's trade surplus hit 23.7 billion U.S. dollars in February.Li Jian, a research fellow with the Research Institute under the Ministry of Commerce, said China's trade surplus had been falling since the start of the year."The deficit in March was just an extension of this trend," Li said.He said China did not purposefully pursue a trade surplus and had adopted a policy of encouraging imports and achieving a trade balance over the years.As the economy improved, any shift in people's expectations towards macro economic policies on liquidity and investment would influence importers' decisions and imported commodity prices, he said."Externally, we need to prudently monitor the world economy to avoid risk of a double-dip recession," he said. "Domestically, we need to focus on economic restructuring and transformation of economic growth pattern based on the stable growth of foreign trade."The GAC attributed the March deficit to shrinking exports of labor-intensive products, surging imports and rising commodity prices."The deficit in March is neither a recession, nor can it be sustained," the GAC said in its report, adding the deficit was small and China had maintained a "basic balance" between imports and exports.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China opposes the U.S. decision to set final duties of up to more than 200 percent on imports of steel gratings from China, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement Wednesday.This came after the U.S. Commerce Department Tuesday announced final anti-dumping duties of 136.76 to 145.18 percent on the gratings to "offset below-market pricing." It also set a countervailing duty of 62.46 percent.MOC said the United States had acted "discriminatorily" in the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation and made the wrong conclusion, and China is dissatisfied and is opposed to this.Such move could hurt the interests of China, which both Chinese government and enterprises would not accept, the ministry said.China urged the U.S. to take effective measures to correct the mistake, it said.According to the U.S. trade remedy procedure, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) will also make its final injury determination about the product soon.If the ITC makes affirmative final determinations that imports of steel gratings from China materially injure, or threaten material injury to, the domestic industry, the Commerce Department will issue anti-dumping duties and countervailing duties orders.In 2009, the United States imposed a series of trade remedy measures on Chinese products, and the value involved was eight times more than that in 2008, the MOC statement said."Such action not only hurts the interests of China, but also has an adverse impact on bilateral economic and trade ties," it said.China hoped the United States could show restraint in using trade remedy measures and act to fight trade protectionism, it said.
