SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man building his travel brand on Instagram said hackers tried to take it all away.Claudio Copiano Jr. runs the account @globalvagabonds. He posts pictures from his travels all around the world and advises people on how to travel on a budget. He’s traveled around the United States and about 30 other countries so far. Copiano has received partnerships with two countries to post about his travels. Eventually, he hopes to build it into a full-time income.“I want to show everybody what I do,” he said. Recently, Copiano received a notification from Instagram saying his email had been changed. “I clicked on ‘forgot my password,’ even though I know my password,” Copiano said.He still could not log in and started to panic. Then, he started to receive emails from someone who said he had hacked the account. The hacker demanded 0 in Bitcoin for the return of the account. Copiano said he sent dozens of emails to Instagram with no luck. “I got an email the first time from them saying that my account had been deleted and there was nothing that they could do,” Copiano said.Fortunately, he was able to figure out the new name of his account and determined it was still active. He said Instagram sent security codes to access his account but it was sent to the hacker’s email.Copiano is still not sure how he got his account back, but said after dozens of attempts, the security code was sent to his phone and he was able to access his account. He immediately changed his password and emphasized he did not pay the ransom. “You should never send money to a hacker because he’s not going to give you your account back,” Copiano said.Security expert Ted Harrington, executive partner with Independent Security Evaluators, agrees. “The reason you don’t pay the ransom is that [it] just further incentivizes other bad guys to keep doing this,” Harrington said. He also encourages people to contact the FBI if they believe they are a victim of a crime to file a report. Harrington also said two-factor authentication is vital to keeping an account safe. It is something Copiano did not have at the time, but added it right after he got his account back. “Two-factor authentication is essentially an additional way to verify who you are,” Harrington said. “Two-factor authentication is one of the most impactful security features that exist today.” A spokesperson with Instagram said they recently launched a new in-app experience making it easier for people to sign in and reclaim an account if it has been hacked. They sent the following information to Team 10:There are two ways to access this experience: 1) if we detect you are having trouble logging in (for e.g. if you repeatedly enter an incorrect password), or 2) by clicking “Need more help” on the login page.The experience will ask you to enter different types of information specific to your account, for example, the email address or phone number associated with your account, or the email or phone number you used when you signed up to Instagram.From there, we will send a 6 digit code to the contact information you select, which will allow you to regain access to your account. When you re-gain access to your account, we will take additional measures to ensure a hacker cannot use codes sent to your email address of phone number to access your account from a different device.This experience allows you to recover your account even if the account information has been changed by a hacker e.g. if the username and associated contact information is changed.The Instagram spokesperson also said if someone gains access through a compromised email account, people can follow steps detailed on the Help Center. 3709

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of San Diego County fire departments have sent crews across the state to help with the Woolsey and Camp Fires. But Cal Fire officials tell 10News they're making sure that enough resources are left behind to cover any emergencies that happen here."We have an obligation here to make sure we keep enough strategic reserve to stay safe in San Diego," says Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jon Heggie.Through a process called "Mutual Aid," Heggie says Cal Fire sent three strike teams, consisting of 15 engines, to help around the state. That leaves 32 engines in San Diego. Heggie says those engines are placed around the county ready to pounce on any fires that spring up."The conditions they've seen up there are very similar to what we're seeing right now," says Heggie. But, he added that all time off had been canceled for Cal Fire employees while San Diego is in a Red Flag Warning."Everyone from the Chief down to the firefighters, they're staying in a heightened state of readiness," he says. "We'll never exceed those thresholds to make sure that we have enough adequate resources available for any fire that starts here in San Diego."Cal Fire's ability to respond quickly was put to the test Monday, when a house fire erupted in Ramona. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A human smuggler reportedly used two children as decoys by dropping them over the border into concertina wire, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. CBP reports that two Salvadoran girls, ages six and nine, were dropped roughly eight feet from the San Diego border behind concertina wire late Monday night. “Agents responded and moments later, a group of 10 individuals crossed the border in the area agents vacated,” said Rodney Scott, Chief Patrol Agent for the U.S. Border Patrol. Scott said on social media that the group eluded capture. The two young girls were given medical attention for what CBP called minor injuries. The agency is working with the consulate in El Salvador to locate the girls’ parents, the agency said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A kitchen fire caused an estimated million in damage at a popular South Park restaurant/bar early Wednesday morning.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said crews were called to Hamilton's Tavern & Cafe, located on 1531 30th Street, at around 5:30 a.m. in response to a fire in the establishment’s kitchen area.ABC 10News learned flames burned into the bar’s dining hall and caused some damage to part of a brewery next door.Hamilton’s owner Scott Blair said, “The first thing I thought is I hope everyone’s OK … you’re just like, I hope everyone’s ok because a neighborhood of people living in that building.”As nearby residents were evacuated, crews were able to knock down the flames within 25 minutes, SDFD officials said.Due to the heavy damage to the kitchen, it is believed Hamilton’s Tavern may not be able to operate for the next few months.The restaurant/bar has been shut down since July and was operating out of its sister brewery because it was larger. Hamilton’s had just started operating outdoors this past weekend due to San Diego County being moved into the state’s restrictive COVID-19 purple tier.According to Blair, the kitchen was their lifeline to stay open. With it completely destroyed they’re unsure where they go from here.“The pandemic has been a nightmare,” Blair told ABC 10News. “It’s gonna take more than this to hang it up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego craft brewery hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic is taking the rare step of opening a restaurant, despite the region going into the state's most restrictive purple tier.Dennis O’Connor says the pandemic hurt Thorne Brewing Company the moment the first shut down kicked in back in March.“It wasn't so much that nobody was coming in, but you also lost all those bars and restaurants that were buying your product,” said O’Connor, who co-founded the brewery in 2012.Not to mention, the price of cans increased, hitting the craft brewer’s distribution.Thorne operates three locations in San Diego County, at least one of which will likely have to shut down as the region enters the most restrictive purple tier, outlawing indoor dining. The restrictions take effect midnight Saturday, to help stop the increased spread of the coronavirus. “We are nowhere near thriving,” O’Connor said. “It’s survival at best.”But O’Connor has a new tool for survival.Connected to Thorne’s Barrio Logan location is a new full service distillery and wood-fired pizza restaurant the brewery finished in march, but never opened. O’Connor says it was a multimillion-dollar project that took years.“It was pretty much just a big blank warehouse,” he said.While the interior can't open, Thorne is converting the restaurant’s outdoor patio into its own barbecue eatery, with a bar in the back called Sideyard Barbecue by Hot Mess (the name of the adjacent pizza restaurant) . It'll seat 84 people and opens to the public Nov. 19.“If outdoor is the new norm then let's do an outdoor and let’s kick (butt) on it,” O’Connor said. “Let's not put it in the street, let’s not put it in a barn tent, let's do something special.
