ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The COVID-19 pandemic is taking its toll on San Diego's art community — just ask James Stone, the owner of Stone & Glass in Escondido. He makes his living as a glassblower and certainly knows what it's like to feel the heat."When it comes to August, it will get to 125 degrees in here," says Stone, referencing the studio where he creates his work. However, he is used to it, as he has been blowing glass for quite some time, in fact, he says he was destined to be a glassblower "I always like to start by telling people that I was born in Flushing Hospital in Flushing, New York. I was delivered by Dr. Glass," Stone says.James became interested in glassblowing in the 1980s, after taking some classes at Palomar College. He said it didn't take long before he was hooked."It's the flame, the flame, the flame is life, and the first time you get around the flame you can't get away from it," Stone said.His creations are simply mind-blowing. The colors and shapes are all beautiful works of art. "When I began in 1986, if you didn't know the formula, to take sand and then make sand into glass, you didn't blow glass," he says.But just like many other professions, the glassblowing industry has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic."It's broken my heart , oh my god it's broken my heart. COVID has changed my business, it's changed the way we do business. We usually have classes of 6 to 10 people, but because of COVID, those classes are all gone," said Stone.So in order to keep his business alive, Stone & Glass has started a "Collectors Club.""This is the first edition," James says while holding up two drinking glasses. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A local family is mourning the loss of a teenage girl killed in a weekend hit-and-run crash in the North County.Kirsten Tomlinson died in the early morning hours of June 6 after authorities said she was struck by a vehicle in an unincorporated part of Escondido.The 17-year-old was several feet from her home on Mesa Rock Road when the incident occurred. The teen was with her siblings and some friends, and as the group prepared to head inside for the night, Tomlinson was hit by a car as she crossed the street.RELATED: 17-year-old killed in unincorporated Escondido hit-and-runThe driver never stopped, according to witnesses and the California Highway Patrol.The teen’s father, William Tomlinson, said he attempted CPR, but it was too late.“It’s a parent’s worst nightmare. I’m never going to have her back now because somebody was irresponsible,” he said.CHP officials released a description of the possible suspect car, and after seeing it on news reports, someone called with a tip that led to the arrest of 29-year-old Paul Anthony Lissona.Tomlinson’s parents are thankful for whoever called in the tip.“I need to thank her and if for some reason, understandably so, she doesn't want to be, we need her to know how grateful we are,” Tomlinson’s mother, Erica Connery, said.RELATED: CHP makes arrest in fatal hit-and-run of teen in unincorporated EscondidoTomlinson was finishing school at Escondido High School and hoped to one day be a marine biologist or veterinarian.Her family also said she wanted to be a model, and her parents said she was always taking pictures.“She was a ball of life. If it wasn't perfect, it was it was re-done 100 times and it doesn't matter if it took five minutes or if it took five hours.”Now, her family is looking for comfort in all of the pictures she left behind.“She took so many pictures and I am so grateful that she did because we have thousands of pictures,” said Connery.Lissona faces felony hit-and-run charges, and a CHP spokesperson said other charges are being considered. 2189
Employers may soon be able to require workers who make tips to share that money with other staff. It's part of a new regulation from the Department of Labor.The agency says the rule could help increase pay for back of house staff, like cooks and dishwashers who have historically been excluded from tip pools.The rule says pooling is only allowed if the tipped employee makes the full federal minimum wage.Federal law allows tipped workers to make .13 an hour, as long as they earn enough tips to match the minimum. State laws vary on that point, though.The rule also gets rid of a guideline that said tipped workers must spend at least 80% of their time doing tasks that earn them gratuity.The National Restaurant Association has praised the rule, calling it a win for the industry because it clarifies laws under the Fair Labor Standards Act.“Today’s Department of Labor (DOL) final rule revising tipping regulations under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is a year-end victory for the restaurant industry and its workers after years of litigation," said the National Restaurant Association in a statement. "The changes in this rule bring much needed regulatory clarification for the small business owners and their employees about what the law allows and requires. At a time when the restaurant industry is faced with instability, this rule provides renewed sensible regulations on tip-pooling and tip-credit standards.”We spoke to an employment attorney named Louis Pechman who founded WaiterPay.com. He said there may be some clarification in the rule, but that's not the big issue.“Tips traditionally have been viewed by management as kryptonite. Don't touch the tips, servers' tips, stay away. That's my money. Now you have a whole situation where servers, it's my money. The tip was left for me. Why am I paying a cook in the kitchen?” said Pechman.The Economic Policy Institute has estimated the rule would let employers take 0 million from tipped workers each year. That's based on numbers before the industry suffered under the pandemic.As Pechman points out, some local laws are very protective of employee tips and will supersede federal regulations.“So, it's important if you're analyzing the issue, is there a state regulation, is there a city regulation which gives more protection to workers than the FLSA does?” asked Pechman.The rule is set to go into effect in 60 days. (CNS) - A motorcyclist was traveling at high speed when he collided with a pick-up truck on Interstate 15 in Escondido and was thrown into traffic lanes, where he was struck by multiple vehicles, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.The CHP is seeing witnesses to the collision, which occurred about 9:55 p.m. Sunday near Via Rancho Parkway.A 48-year-old man from Chula Vista was riding a Harley Davidson Softail on the Centre City Parkway on-ramp to the southbound I-15 at a high rate of speed, according to CHP Officer Mark Latulippe. As the motorcyclist transitioned from the ramp onto the freeway, he sideswiped a Toyota Tundra traveling in the far right lane, the officer said.The initial contact between the Toyota and the Harley Davidson caused the motorcyclist to lose control, and the rider to be ejected, he said. Before emergency personnel arrived at the scene, multiple vehicles struck the motorcyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene.He was not immediately identified. 1022

(KGTV) - California representatives are calling on the government to fund the Storm Damage Reduction Project, hoping to stabilize cliffs along North San Diego County beaches.At Grandview Beach in Encinitas flowers surrounded the beach entrance sign Thursday. Down on the beach caution tape hung around the cliffs, serving as a somber reminder of the three women who died three weeks ago after a bluff collapse.Two days before the tragedy, Representative Mike Levin said he asked for federal funds to stabilize the cliffs from Encinitas to Solana Beach. "It's long past time for the federal government to uphold its responsibility here," he said.He championed the Storm Damage Reduction Project that was approved by Congress in 2016.The project would dredge tons of sand from the ocean and dump it on the beach to protect the cliffs from powerful, eroding waves.Environmentalists are concerned that would destroy tidal ecosystems. A study conducted by researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego states invertebrate populations were negatively affected by tons of sand dumped on Imperial Beach.Surfrider Foundation sent 10News this statement:“We understand Solana Beach and Encinitas have been working with the federal government on the San Diego County Shore Protection Project for years and it was approved in 2016 by Congress. While we believe beach replenishment might help slow down wave action, we must also acknowledge our sand supply has been impacted by upland development that is blocking the natural flow of sand to the beaches. When the project was being considered in 2015, the Federal EPA encouraged the Army Corps. to think more deeply about future sea level rise and the efficacy of this project. We encourage the cities and the Army Corps to proactively and progressively analyze future sea level rise. Thorough monitoring is going to be of the utmost importance to see how this project impacts coastal ecosystems (including Marine Protected Areas) and impacts to recreation (such as surfing, snorkeling, etc.). Surfrider highly advocates against future seawalls and other coastal armoring. Even the Environmental Impact Report for this project acknowledges these kinds of structures exacerbate erosion.” "I'm an environmentalist myself; it's what I do for a living. I care very deeply for our coastline. I'll do everything I can to protect it," Levin said.
