BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's railway authorities said Wednesday that it would put 315 more trains into service on Wednesday to cope with Lunar New Year travel demand, compared with 159 on Tuesday.About 3.7 million passengers hit the rails on Tuesday, up from 2.29 million on Monday, the Ministry of Railways said in a statement on its website.The ministry expected a post-festival travel peak on Friday.The country's trains carried a total of 83.46 million passengers from Jan. 8 to 22, up 7.9 percent from a year earlier, the ministry said in a statement issued on Tuesday.The 40-day Spring Festival travel season kicked off on Jan. 8 this year, with hundreds of millions of people, mainly migrant workers and college students, heading home for the most important festival in China.A total of 3.16 billion passenger trips are expected during the year's travel rush, up 9.1 percent from a year earlier. Of those journeys, 235 million are likely to be made by train, up 6.1 percent year-on-year.The Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Jan. 23 this year.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Only one in every three passengers secured train tickets on Saturday through a new online booking system or by phone, according to railway statistics released Sunday.A total of 2.112 million train tickets were sold online or by phone on Saturday, making up 36.3 percent of the total sales, the Ministry of Railways (MOR) said.Railway authorities have long been under pressure to increase capacity and improve ticketing services, as many find it extremely hard to secure a single ticket during major holidays such as the upcoming Spring Festival.The MOR set up an online ticketing system this year in a bid to ease passengers' frustrations in purchasing tickets.However, website glitches have added to the woes of travelers, especially migrant workers, who make up the biggest group in the Spring Festival travel rush.The rush, dubbed the world's largest seasonal migration, started Sunday and will continue for over 40 days.China's railways are expected to carry 235 million passengers over the next 40 days, up 6.1 percent year-on-year, the MOR said last week.The Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Jan. 23.

NANCHANG, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- A copper sword dating back more than 2,200 years has been discovered in east China's Jiangxi Province, local archaeologists said.The design and shape of the sword indicate that it was forged during the Warring States Period (475 BC - 221 BC), according to Li Guoli, curator of the Nanchang Museum, where the sword is currently being stored.Despite having little aesthetic or scientific value due to a lack of decor or inscriptions, the sword still offers insights into the type of military equipment used during the period, Li said.The identity of the sword's original owner and the precise location where the sword was forged and used are still unknown, Li said.The sword was discovered by a laborer surnamed Xiong in Jiangxi's capital of Nanchang. Xiong found the sword while sorting and cleaning stones that had been dredged up from a riverbank.An argument between Xiong and another worker who was trying to claim the sword aroused attention from the local law enforcement, who then convinced Xiong to turn the sword over to archaeological authorities.

BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- China said Saturday that positive and balanced outcomes were achieved at the sixth summit of the Group of Twenty (G20) held earlier this week in the southern French city of Cannes."All the sides were committed at the summit to further coordinating their macro-economic policies, stabilizing the financial market, prompting economic growth, improving global economic governance and working together to maintain the hard-won momentum of the economic recovery," said Ma Zhaoxu, spokesman of the Chinese delegation after President Hu Jintao returned from Cannes, where Hu and the leaders of other G20 members' met to tackle major issues affecting global economic recovery and financial stability.The Chinese spokesman mentioned the Declaration, the Communique and the Action Plan issued after the meeting as "three outcome documents" of the G20 Cannes summit.Ma said priority was given to the European sovereign debt issue at the meeting."All the sides noted that the European Union has recently put forward a new series of measures and ideas to address the sovereign debt issue and hope that these measures will help Europe to stabilize the financial market, overcome the current difficulties and spur the economic recovery and development," he said.The Cannes Action Plan approved at the summit was meant to coordinate the macro-economic policies of all the members to endorse economic recovery and summon market confidence, said the spokesman.
