CARLSBAD, Calif., (KGTV) -- Nearly 200 active duty mothers and mothers who support active duty staff at Camp Pendleton, got a full day of pampering at the 12th Annual Military Mother's Day Brunch. 10News spoke to the Torres family. "Right now, Daddy's deployed," mother, Sonia Torres said. While her husband defends the country as Sgt. Major of Batallion 1-4, she defends the homefront as she cares for her two children, Jasmine and Al."My mom means the world to me. She does everything for me. Cook, kisses me good night, everything," 11-year-old Al said.With no family nearby, military mothers like Torres are in a unique parenting situation. They play the roles of both mom and dad. "Since Daddy left, we needed something to fill that void, and we found Tae Kwon Do. We [Al] went from white belt to yellow belt to orange belt, Friday night." Torres said proudly.They often witness milestones alone. Jasmine celebrated her 13th birthday yesterday. "My mom is well, there's no words to describe it. She's always there for me. I couldn't really ask more than that," Jasmine said. So they don't. The Torres children will spend the rest of their lives being Mama's Girl and Mama's Boy."When I'm in university or college, I would be really close to her because she's my number one fan," Al said. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The owner of Lhooq Books is hoping the community can help him out, after being served with a 60-day notice to vacate.Sean Christopher has owned and run Lhooq Books on Carlsbad Village Drive for a decade. His book store specializes in rare books. It also features a public library outside, where people can either buy books for a donation or borrow them. It also hosts small public art events.But all of it is at risk.Christopher says he contacted his leasing company, Pacific Coast Commercial, in September to ask about the state of his rental agreement. Instead of getting answers, he says they served him with a notice to vacate."It was a complete and utter shock," says Christopher. "There was not even a hint that anything was wrong."In addition to being forced to leave his store, Christopher says he's also been told to leave his home, which he rents from the same company. The store and home are both on the same plot of land.Christopher says part of the shock came because of all the work he's done on the property. He estimates that he's spent thousands of dollars to clean up the home and renovate the store."I've basically replaced, repaired or deep cleaned absolutely every inch of the property," he says.He also says he had an agreement with the owner to do more work over the next few months to add a new entrance to the book store and a new storage shed in the home's yard.Now, he's confused why the owner would make that agreement and then force him out.Christopher says there's no way he can uproot his life, family and business in under two months."To find a suitable retail store, and a home, and then pay security deposits and first and last month's rent on both, while continuing to pay rent here, it's literally impossible," says Christopher.When he reached out for a follow-up with the rental company, Christopher says they told him their decision was "just business."They also told him to stop calling, or he'd be given a 3-day eviction notice.Now he wants to fight back. Christopher says he understand's the owner's rights to end his lease, but he hired a lawyer to try and get an extension."I'm not being unreasonable," he says. "I'm just trying to get a compromise, a resolution so that I can relocate without maxing out my credit cards or going bankrupt and possibly homeless."To help pay legal fees, Christopher has set up aGoFundMe account. Caterpillar could eliminate nearly 900 jobs in the US and Central America, the company said on Friday.Job cuts will happen at locations in Texas and Panama as part of a restructuring, a spokeswoman said. Employees were notified earlier this year, she said.The heavy equipment manufacturer also said it is "contemplating the closure" of an engine factory in La Grange, Illinois, which is part of its subsidiary Progress Rail, a supplier of railroad and transit products. The closure, if it happens, would eliminate 600 full-time jobs in engine manufacturing. The company said it might be "transitioning" its rail manufacturing to facilities in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as well as "outside suppliers." The company said the employees were informed in January.Caterpillar is planning to close its work tools facility in Waco, Texas, by the end of 2018, eliminating 200 job and contractor positions there, the company said. The employees were notified last month. The company plans to move the manufacturing to Wamego, Kansas, and also to "external suppliers."Caterpillar also confirmed that it's closing a facility in Panama, and that 80 jobs will be eliminated. The company said these workers were informed in January.The cost-cutting measures come even as a growing global economy is boosting demand for its heavy-duty equipment. (KGTV) — A 52-year-old modeling photographer was arrested this week in Carlsbad, accused of sexually assaulting a teenager.Robert Koester, of Carlton, Ore., was arrested on Tuesday at a Carlsbad Blvd. residence after the reported sexual assault of a 16-year-old during a modeling shoot, according to Carlsbad Police.Police were alerted to the reported sexual assault on Monday after the teenager said she met with Koester, who was subcontracted by Frank, a Carlsbad-based modeling agency. MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe victim said during the photo shoot, Koester sexually assaulted her. She left the shoot early and told her father about the incident.Police investigated and found Koester at the residence, which he was temporarily renting. Police said other evidence was collected at the scene.Investigators are working with the modeling agency, Frank, to identify other possible victims.
