SAN DIEGO - At St. John The Evangelist's Sunday night service, the pews were packed to hear why their pastoral associate was resigning.Aaron Bianco was asked to come to St. John August of 2016. His work for the San Diego church: organizing events, budgets and other behind the scenes tasks. His goal, to build up a more inclusive church.Bianco has been married to his husband for 10 years last month, and once he started at St. John, so did the attacks."They've threatened me from shooting me down across the street, to throwing Molotov cocktails into the church," Bianco said. The hate groups sent emails equating him to a pedophile and threatening him. His tires were slashed, fire thrown at the church doors, the office broken into and spray painted with a gay slur."They're no different from organized crime or a terrorist group. They will continue until they get their way," Bianco said their goal was to force him out. "I'm convinced that the gospel is on my side, and they can spew their hate, but I'm not going to allow them to make me hate them back," Bianco said.Last week his personal information including photos of his family and his home address was published on a conservative Catholic website. Bianco said he saw someone in their yard in the middle of the night watching the house.Since the threats, he's added security to his home and filed police reports. He realized it was all too much, "My life and those of my family are more important than any job."Bianco addressed the packed church at Sunday night's mass, "when hate rages like a fire, love rains down, and I feel it from so many of you in this room."Bianco said he believes there is more good in the world than bad, explaining he's received encouraging notes from people all over the world. After his speech, the church erupted, "It made me so happy that everybody stood there and clapped for the longest ovation I've ever heard in a church in my life. Letting him know that we love you, we care about you and you're going to be missed," Parishioner Berena Pe?a said. She attended the church a decade prior and stopped coming because she didn't feel welcome as a lesbian. Her friend convinced her to try again two years ago. She said she could feel the difference, and it woke her up.Bianco said this is not the end, and he will keep fighting. He said he will still attend church, hopes these groups stop their attacks and instead come and talk with him. 2524

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Anglers and biologists believe California is likely to experience an increase of chinook salmon during the fall run resulting from the coronavirus and fewer fish caught during the summer. The San Francisco Chronicle reported state and federal scientists earlier this year forecast more than 473,000 adult salmon off the San Francisco Bay Area coast from the Sacramento River system. The forecast is a big jump from 380,000 last year and 224,000 in 2018. The season for the fish also called king salmon was delayed from its scheduled opening, with more than two months of fishing shut down. 618

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The high temperatures, dry brush, and low humidity are leading to elevated fire danger in San Diego County this week.Cal Fire San Diego is asking everyone to be prepared for the possibility of a wildfire igniting.“We depend on the public to be careful; we depend on the public to be prepared at a moment’s notice to evacuate,” said Cal Fire Captain, Isaac Sanchez.“The fact that the winds aren’t there, it does not help us sleep at night; we’re still very dry. It’s still October, and we know that even though there aren’t winds now, we can bet money that there will be winds later.”As fire danger remains a threat across the county, families braved the heat taking schoolwork outside at Mast Park in Santee, after being stuck at home for months.“It’s so much easier for the kids to stay motivated on getting their work done,” Jennifer Sailler. “It’s harder to stay inside our home with the AC running than it is to be outside in the warm heat.”The heat is also keeping business going for some.“My job requires me to have a close relationship with snakes and the sun,” said Alex Trejo, So-Cal Rattlesnake Removal. “When it’s hot, what they’re actually doing is trying to find shelter. “Trejo removes rattlesnakes from properties and relocates them to areas where they can have a second chance at life.He said he’s been getting more calls for rattlesnake removals in the East County during the hot weather.“It’s very important to understand the nature of the snake; the snake is not out to hurt people, the snake is a survival expert,” he said. “My priority is making sure families are safe during this heatwave because they will be coming on people’s properties right now.”The heat advisory will remain in effect until 5 PM Friday. 1757

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Facing a steep surge of COVID-19 cases in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Sunday that he is shutting down bars in several counties across the state and recommending closures in others.Newsom made the announcement on Twitter hours after the state reported 5,972 new coronavirus cases on Saturday.San Diego County was not on the list of closures or recommended closures."NEW: Due to the rising spread of #COVID19, CA is ordering bars to close in Fresno, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, San Joaquin, and Tulare, while recommending they close in Contra Costa, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Stanislaus, & Ventura," Newsom tweeted at 12:17 p.m.On Saturday, Los Angeles County health officials reported "significant increases" in COVID-19 cases, including 2,169 newly confirmed cases and 23 additional deaths. The seven-day average of Los Angeles' daily new cases is more than 1,900; an increase of nearly 600 daily new cases from two weeks ago.State officials reported a total of 206,433 COVID-19 cases and 5,872 fatalities of June 26."We are actively monitoring COVID-19 across the state and working closely with counties where there are increased rates and concerning patterns of transmission," said Dr. Sonia Angell, the state's public health director. "Closing bars in these counties is one of a number of targeted actions counties are implementing across our state to slow the virus' spread and reduce risk."The recent surge as hit some areas of California hard. Imperial County, with a population of 175,000 people on the state’s border with San Diego and Mexico, was ordered to reimpose stay-home orders amid a surge in positive coronavirus tests.Imperial's positivity rate has averaged 23% in the last week, compared with 5.7 % percent statewide. Newsom said there is also a need to decompress the county's hospital system, which other counties have helped do by accepting patients."I noted a positivity rate over a 14-day period in the state of California at 5.3 percent. The positivity rate over a 14-day period in Imperial County is approaching 23 percent," Newsom said Friday. The Imperial Valley provides many of the vegetables in U.S. supermarkets during winter. In San Diego bars are fearful they're next.Roy Romero, CEO of Tivoli Bar and Grill (the oldest bar in San Diego County) said they just got back in the green after opening up two weeks ago."It's scary because we just got back," he said passionately. "I just hope and I keep saying, 'Wow man, I know they're going to close down again if people don't start doing the right thing.'"Stay with 10News for updates to this developing story.FACEBOOK REACTION TO SHUT DOWN 2716
