As the NHL went into what it calls “Phase 2” of its plans to resume the 2019-20 season, the league announced that 23 players tested positive for the coronavirus.The 23 players who tested positive is in addition to 12 players who previously tested positive in early June when the league began “Phase 1” of its reopening plan. All told, the league has had 35 players test positive.So far, the league has administered a total of 2,900 tests, with 396 having been tested so far. ATLANTA (AP) — Early in-person voting began Monday in Georgia for the state's two U.S. Senate runoffs.The early voting period runs as late as Dec. 31 in some counties.It could determine the outcome of the races between Republican U.S. Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler and Democratic challengers Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock.A majority of votes before the Nov. 3 general election were cast in person during early voting.The period could be even more important during the runoffs because of the shortened period for voters to request and return ballots by mail.More than 125,000 people cast ballots in October on the first day of early voting. As the nation debates on whether to reopen schools this fall, President Donald Trump said schools should “100%” be open this fall, despite concerns from educator unions and others over the spread of the coronavirus.During his coronavirus news conference on Wednesday, Trump was asked whether he planned on sending his son and grandchildren back to school this fall.“Yes, I am comfortable with that,” Trump said.“I would like to see the schools open. Open 100% and we will do it safely, we will do carefully but when you look at the statistics -- I just read having to do with children and safety ---- they are very impressive. They have very strong immune systems,” Trump added.Trump said that it is his belief that children are less likely to spread the virus. But research thus far has not been conclusive to back Trump’s claims.A study released from South Korea and published by the CDC found that while children under age 9 were less likely to spread the virus, youth ages 10 through 19 were just as likely as adults of spreading the virus.The study also found that closing schools in several Chinese cities, including Wuhan, showed that school closure and social distancing significantly reduced the rate of COVID-19 among contacts of school-aged children. “The role of household transmission of SARS-CoV-2 amid reopening of schools and loosening of social distancing underscores the need for a time-sensitive epidemiologic study to guide public health policy,” the researchers wrote.The American Federation of Teachers this week pointed toward a three-point plan that the US should implement for reopening schools.“Our plan details three conditions essential for schools to reopen,” wrote Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. “First, the average daily community infection rate among those tested for the coronavirus must be very low. (New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has required the rate not to exceed 5 percent for at least 14 days.) Second, schools must employ public health protocols, including 6-feet social distancing, masks, deep cleaning and handwashing stations. Third, adequate resources must be available to enact these safeguards, including funding for additional nurses, guidance counselors and teachers to reduce class size.”Weingarten said that Trump has politicized reopening schools, and she called on Congress to approve giving schools additional funding to reopen. As millions of Americans have been without work amid the pandemic, nearly 12 million people will lose unemployment benefits on December 26, according to the Century Foundation.The Century Foundation estimates that 7.3 million Americans will exhaust benefits from the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program. The federal program extended unemployment benefits for millions of Americans who otherwise would not have received state unemployment benefits.According to the Century Foundation, 4.6 million Americans will lose benefits through the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program on December 26. This fund extended state unemployment benefits for an additional 13 weeks. The 4.6 million Americans is in addition to the 3.5 million workers who will have lost PEUC benefits by then.“Congress has stared down major expirations of jobless benefits multiple times during the Great Recession and previous economic cycles,” the Century Foundation said. “Policy makers have been more comfortable with enacting temporary extended benefits programs with more predictable costs rather than improving the automatic stabilizers in (extended benefits) EB."While millions of Americans are set to lose benefits, there remains ongoing debate on Capitol Hill to provide some form of economic stimulus. There have been various proposals that would offer extended benefits, but the House, Senate and White House have struggled to find any sort of agreement.“With the stakes of the benefit cutoff perhaps higher than they have ever been before, there also seems to be a grave danger that unemployed Americans could be left behind during a lame duck session taking place in the overhang of a contested presidential election,” the Century Foundation said. “But the numbers—and families behind them—leave no excuses for inaction.” 1829
