ZHANGZHOU, Fujian, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Friday visited some Taiwan businesses in Zhangzhou of southeastern Fujian Province ahead of the Spring Festival to extend New Year greetings.Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, visited a business park for Taiwan farmers in Zhangpu county of Zhangzhou City. The park, set up in 2006, houses more than 70 Taiwan-funded agricultural firms."We will try our best in everything that will benefit the Taiwan compatriots, and we will honor our words," Hu told the Taiwan business people.He said the mainland and Taiwan were negotiating on the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement. "Its' something that will help promote cross-Strait economic cooperation and bring win-win results. BEIJING, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Centralized procurement by the Chinese government has helped save close to 2 billion yuan (about 290 million U.S. dollars) in 2009, an official said here Thursday.The Chinese government spent more than 14.7 billion yuan in government procurement last year, Chen Jianming, director with the government procurement center said during a work conference held in Beijing.The figure was 1.8 billion yuan more than in 2008, he said.Chen noted that Chinese government departments had made "remarkable" progress in reducing their expenditures in 2009.For instance, the amount of money spent on purchasing vehicles by the government departments in 2009 dropped by 35 percent year on year, he said.They also spent two percent less in government procurement for work conferences compared with the year before, he said.Chen said the government purchases will continue to focus on energy-efficient, environment-friendly, as well as innovative and domestic products in 2010.The procurement center would stick to the policies of protecting information security and supporting small and medium-sized companies when making purchases, in order to push forward the development of the country's industries and the readjustment of its economic structure, Chen said.

PARIS, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Nuclear power should be developed with due regulations and in an orderly way thanks to its strict requirement for human resources, technology, security and quality, a Chinese official said Monday here at the international conference on civilian use of nuclear energy.Nuclear power, a clean, safe and economic energy, "plays an important role in energy conservation, environment protection and the strive to cope with climate change," Deputy Director of China' s National Energy Administration Wu Yin said, adding it has became "a major choice to develop economy and optimize energy structure" for many developing countries.Speaking to representatives from about 60 countries at the headquarters of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, Wu said that changing the mode of energy development, optimizing the energy mix and reducing carbon emission is now a shared aspiration of the world.According to him, China has accelerated the construction of nuclear power stations in recent years. Besides 11 nuclear power units that are already in operation, there are 21 many units under construction with a combined installed capacity of 23 gigawatts.Taking the nuclear security as the top priority, Wu presented some suggestions addressing the increasing global demand of nuclear access."The security of nuclear energy is beyond borders, we should strive to shape a culture on safe use of nuclear power.
