SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The July Fourth holiday weekend is expected to bring large crowds to San Diego's beaches.Los Angeles beaches will be closed this weekend, and that has some concerned that even more people will flock to San Diego's beaches.Debra Moore lives in Encinitas. She'd like the beaches closed indefinitely."I think they opened way too soon, and we all saw this coming. They told us it was going to come, and I'm sorry so many more people had to get sick," said Moore. She said young people in her neighborhood aren't taking the pandemic seriously."Nobody is wearing a mask, nobody is social distancing. People are walking around my neighborhood all the time, or on the beach, just like it's normal, and nothing is normal anymore," said Moore.Del Mar Councilman Dave Druker also has concerns."People are very worried about lifeguards being overwhelmed and the whole city being overwhelmed with visitors, cause there's nowhere else to go," said councilman Druker.Tuesday, San Diego county supervisor Nathan Fletcher said it's up to officials in coastal communities to decide whether beaches should close this weekend.Fletcher also said all of the coronavirus outbreaks have been linked to indoor settings. He said he doesn't think closing beaches is necessary right now. 1285

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The mother who reported her 3-year-old son missing in Linda Vista Tuesday morning has been arrested. According to police, Maria Flores was arrested for filing a false police report. Flores reported her son, Kevin Serrano, missing from a home in the 2500 block of Ulrich St. just after 10 a.m., according to San Diego Police. At 3:00 p.m., police reported the boy was found unharmed in the 7500 block of Mesa College Drive. Officers said the child's caregiver called them and said he had been dropped off in the morning.Flores told police that Kevin was last seen at home. Police deployed officers on foot, patrolling on motorcycles, and air resources to help search for Serrano.“This is highly unusual. We’re taking this extremely seriously," police said during a press conference. "The door was unlocked and closed, according to the mom ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The newest cheetah cub at the San Diego Zoo has begun a training program to become one of the zoo's animal ambassadors.10News was taken inside the cheetah habitat Wednesday for a behind-the-scenes look at the process, focusing on a five-month-old cub, Roketi."She actually came from a litter of six at a zoo in Texas," said Nicki Boyd, the zoo's Behavior Husbandry Manager. "Unfortunately, she was the runt and not thriving. She had five brothers who were stealing all the milk."Because Roketi could have died by staying with her mother and siblings, she was removed and reared by humans, then sent to the San Diego Zoo.Because of her comfort level with people, Roketi was chosen to train as an animal ambassador. That means she'll be part of the "Animals in Action" program, which gives visitors a closer view and more interactive experience with zoo animals. Many visitors are surprised to see dogs in the habitat with cheetahs, but experts say the dogs help young cheetahs adjust, play, and learn how to interact with humans. The training can take months. "We don't just throw them in together," explained Charmaine Davis, who heads the program. "It's a process. It's all this passive training, day by day."Davis says they use dogs of several different breeds. More important is to find dogs which are the appropriate size to play with a cheetah, not too big or too small.Davis says the zoo is proud to use rescue dogs. "We try, best we can, to find them in the local shelters, giving them a forever home here at the San Diego Zoo with a beautiful, spotted cheetah." 1595

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video caught on team of thieves targeting a home in Point Loma. The home sits on a street just off Catalina boulevard. Last Thursday, just before 8 p.m., an SUV is seen driving up and then driving away. 12 minutes later, it's back. This time, it parks. As the camera switches to night vision, three figures emerge. On the side of the home, they are seen hunting for a way in. The dual-pane sliding door in the kitchen is later found shattered. The next time they are seen, the three burglars wearing hoodies are scrambling out of the home, two of them carrying safes. Once they reach the SUV, they toss the safes into the back and take off. Inside the safes: a partial coin collection and dozens of pieces of jewelry, many of them family heirlooms. "I'm angry amd there is a feeling of being empty," said David, who asked 10news not to identify him. One of the stolen pieces is an opal-and-diamond necklace belonging to David's 90-year-old mother, who is living with dementia. She helped design the piece to celebrate her journey from file clerk to business owner at the same business. "Something missing you can't replace ... My mother became a success in a man's world. Very proud of her," said David, choking back tears. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crimestoppers at 888-580-8477. 1347
