TIJUANA (KGTV) -- Mexico's president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, spoke at a unity rally on Saturday evening, just hours after coming to an agreement with the U.S. avoiding tariffs on Mexican goods. The deal was announced Friday night. In his speech, Lopez Obrador said Mexico is open to collaboration. In his speech to a crowd of thousands, the president said the tariffs would have impacted both economies. The agreement means Mexico will send 6,000 troops to its southern border with Guatemala to help control migration and vowing to crack down on human trafficking and smuggling networks. Obrador's visit to Tijuana created tensions among Mexicans who have conflicting opinions about the deal. The tariffs would have started on Monday.President Trump hasn't publicly responded to Saturday's speech in Tijuana but in Friday's tweet, he thanked the Mexican government for working to come to this agreement. 918

There's a new push to acknowledge the greater impact of racism on health.Three Democratic lawmakers created the Anti-Racism and Public Health Act, which would create two new programs within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).One is a National Center for Anti-Racism to research health disparities and develop policies to close the divide. The other is a new program within the CDC’s Center for Injury Prevention and Control that would be focused on preventing law enforcement violence. The bill also calls on the federal government to declare racism a public health crisis. Meanwhile, many state and local governments have already done that. The American Public Health Association says federal action would identify racism as an issue of national importance.“I think the goal is to get us to take our heads of the sand and not be afraid to call racism for what it is,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin, Executive Director at the American Public Health Association.Benjamin says the pandemic has shown the extent of racism as a health issue, pointing to matters that prevent people of color from getting tested and the apprehension Black men face when it comes to putting on a mask, because it can be seen as threatening. He says the stress can raise blood pressure and cause health issues.“If you actually go in and understand their life experiences, they have higher degrees of stress,” said Benjamin. “Stress, it changes a whole range of bodily hormones that have negative impacts on the body.”The American Public Health Association declared systemic racism a public health crisis in June, shortly after George Floyd’s death.A U.S. Senate version of the bill has been referred to committee. 1708

Those in charge of the race for a COVID-19 vaccine are trying to keep the process transparent.“Those checks aren’t just critical to the development of a safe and effective vaccine, although they are, they are also essential to maintaining and inspiring the public trust,” said Ana Mari Cauce, President of the University of Washington.Johns Hopkins and the University of Washington hosted a virtual symposium. Dr Anthony Fauci took part, as did the head of Operation Warp Speed, the public and private partnership overseeing COVID vaccine therapies. He's vowed to resign if political pressure impacts a vaccine being safe and effective.“We expect them to read that or have a first look at their efficacy outcome within the next several weeks,” said Dr. Moncef Slaoui, Chief Advisor for Operation Warp Speed. “Nobody can really say when, but the expectation would be that this would happen between the month of November and December.”There are detailed plans and protocols at some 25 manufacturing sites across the U.S.Independent experts with decades of experience in Ebola, Zika and HIV gave perspective on COVID-19 vaccine trials.“We use 30,000 and if you actually calculate how many is needed for efficacy, most companies would do it around 15,000, but we fortunately have the funding to be able to do larger trials,” said Dr. Larry Corey, a vaccine and infectious disease expert. The experts promised that phase-3 trial data would be publicly vetted during a broadcasted advisory committee meeting. You can see the full symposium on Johns Hopkins University's YouTube page right now. 1592

Top officials tapped with developing, approving and distributing COVID-19 vaccines say they're on track to begin distributing the first doses in the coming weeks and plan to vaccinate 100 million Americans by the end of February. In a press conference on Wednesday, Health and Human Services Director Alex Azar said the FDA would meet on Dec. 10 regarding Pfizer's vaccine candidate and on Dec. 17 regarding Moderna's vaccine candidate. The agency is currently reviewing both for Emergency Use Authorization. Both companies have been manufacturing doses of their candidate for several months in the hopes of ramping up supply in case of approval. Hundreds of thousands of doses of both doses will be ready for delivery as soon as approval is granted.Dr. Moncef Slaoui, Operation Warp Speed's chief advisor, stressed that the data from the vaccine trials are "clear" and shows both candidates to be safe and effective.According to Gen. Gus Perna, the operation's chief operating officer, the Department of Defense is prepared to deliver several million doses of both Pfizer and Moderna's vaccine upon approval. He said Wednesday that states are required to submit their "microplans" for Pfizer vaccine delivery to the Pentagon by the end of the week, and for the Moderna vaccine by the end of next week."The states know their populations the best," Perna said. Both Moderna's and Pfizer's vaccine candidates require two shots that need to be taken 28 days apart, and both vaccines need to be stored at ultra-cold temperatures before use.Slaoui said Wednesday that government officials expect 20 million Americans to be vaccinated by the end of December and that they project 100 million Americans will be vaccinated by the end of February. On Tuesday, an FDA panel recommended that health care workers and patients in long-term health facilities would be the first to receive the vaccine. Experts believe the vaccine will be available to everyone who wants it by spring 2021.Slaoui said Wednesday that government officials expect 20 million Americans to be vaccinated by the end of December and that they project 100 million Americans will be vaccinated by the end of February.Slaoui added that a one-shot vaccine candidate produced by Johnson & Johnson and a vaccine being developed by AstraZeneca could reach efficacy thresholds by the end of the month and that their approval would improve supply. Also on Wednesday, Azar stressed that new antibody treatments for COVID-19 are now available to any patients older than 65 who are not in the hospital. He also urged anyone who has recovered from COVID-19 in the last three months to donate their blood plasma to aid in those antibody treatments. The press conference was held the same day that officials in the United Kingdom granted emergency approval for the Pfizer vaccine. 2832
