BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security Tuesday urged police nationwide to take initiatives in cracking serious crime cases and solving social conflicts to ensure a safe World Expo in Shanghai.Vice Minister Huang Ming said police should seriously crack down on illegal activities, including illegal use of guns and explosives, kidnapping of children and women, gang-related crimes and online pornography.Police in Shanghai and its neighboring regions were asked to reinforce security measures and increase street patrols, and mobilize local residents to ensure a safe environment for the upcoming World Expo.Huang said the police should learn from Beijing's experience of successfully safeguarding the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 2009.Police were also asked to visit grassroot level communities and villages to find prominent problems and help relevant authorities settle disputes.Shanghai's neighboring provinces, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Fujian, Shandong, Henan and Hubei, would reinforce security checks in air flights and trains, Huang said.Huang also urged the police to enforce the law in a reasonable and civilized manner and minimize disturbances to the public.The World Expo, to be hosted by China for the first time, will run from May 1 to Oct. 31. BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has encouraged students from Xinjiang who are attending school in southern Guangdong Province to study hard and become qualified builders of the country.Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China(CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when replying to a letter written by the 12th graders of Guangdong Guangya High School on Sunday, or the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year.Zhou visited the time-honored school in Guangzhou, capital of the southern province, last September and talked with the students from northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. They wrote a letter to Zhou before the Spring Festival, which fell on Sunday.Zhou said in the letter that launching classes for high school students from Xinjiang in inland provinces is a major decision made by the Party and the government. It aims to let Xinjiang's children to enjoy better education so they can grow up healthily and make greater contributions to their hometown and the country.Zhou said the 56 ethnic groups in the country are a family and they have gone through thick and thin together to forge the flesh-and-blood ties.Zhou said the Party and government are exerting great efforts to address major issues including development gap between southern Xinjiang and other western regions, and the eastern coastal regions of the country.He told students that the CPC Central Committee is to hold a meeting on Xinjiang work, at which major decision will be made to boost Xinjiang's development. BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The quality of China's agricultural produce including vegetables, domestic animals and aquatics was improved in 2009, the Ministry of Agriculture said Monday.The ministry released an annual report based on monitoring results of agricultural products, saying 96.4 percent of vegetables had met safety standards in 2009, up 0.1 percentage points year on year.The rate was 99.5 percent for domestic animals, up 0.8 percentage points, and 97.2 percent for aquatic products, up 1.5 percentage points.The monitoring of fruits, mushrooms and tea, for the first time in 2009, found 98 percent, 95.2 percent, and 94.8 percent of products in the three categories met standards.In 2009, the inspections became more detailed, covered more categories, and were carried out in 259 large and medium-sized cities, compared with only 36 major cities previously, the ministry said.The ministry said it would step up the control over the use of prohibited pesticides and veterinary drugs in 2010 in order to further improve the quality and safety of agricultural produce.

BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A cold front is expected to sweep the northern part of China over the next three days, bringing strong wind and a temperature drop, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said Sunday.Small to moderate snow or sleet is forecast in the northern and southwestern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, western Tibet Autonomous Region and the northeastern part of China.The cold front will cause a temperature drop of four to six degrees Celsius since Feb. 15 in central and eastern parts of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, north China and northeastern China.The central and the eastern part of China will see a temperature drop of three to five degrees Celsius.Areas in Hunan and Guizhou provinces would expect freezing rain over the following three days.The CMA also said the blizzard condition which had stricken eastern Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces had eased to small to moderate snow or sleet.The National Meteorological Center had cleared the blizzard warning by 6 p.m. Sunday, 24 hours after the issuance, the CMA said.
