Chicago’s west side gets a reputation, so there are many in the community working to change that.“I believe where we are sitting right now is seven miles from downtown, but the lives of people who live here are so much different,” said resident Jamyle Cannon. "The west side of Chicago is often labeled as more dangerous, is often labeled as one of the areas that people try to avoid.”“A lot of people have misconceptions about the west side of Chicago,” said boxer Tyler Matthews.But on the corner of Karlov and Kamerling, there is a sanctuary, known as The Bloc.“When you step into a boxing gym, you think you’re gonna learn how to knock people out and fight other people,” Cannon explained. “But you really end up learning how to fight the things that are holding you back internally, so you can maximize your potential in all areas of your life.”For the youth that come to this former church turned boxing gym, Cannon is in their corner.“We offer boxing as a gateway to build relationships with young people, to connect them to resources that are often missing in our community's resources,” Cannon said.He knows the fight many of these students face. He is a former teacher, who started this boxing club in his classroom in 2016.“You grow up in a community where you’re hearing shootings every weekend. We can't expect you to walk into a school building and act like everything is fine, but that’s what we do in this city,” Cannon said.Dozens of students every week now come to The Bloc to take on the opponent that can be life.“Every punch I throw, every jab I throw in the ring has been the product of tons of people working on that jab with me,” said Corey Rowland.Two years ago, Rowland needed someone in his corner.“I started playing around in the streets a little bit,” Rowland said. “Getting into things I shouldn’t have been getting into. Drugs, crime and stuff like that."He says The Bloc helped him with rent, helped land him a job, and helped him channel a fighting spirit.“The work I do and the hard sweat, punching a bag, I’ve been doing that all by myself but the whole time I have that team behind me,” Rowland said.This year, the Bloc has helped in ways beyond just the ring. They’ve organized a food pantry to help members of the community in need.As the school year begins, Cannon is establishing an academic support center to make sure all students can connect to virtual learning and get their school work done.“It takes like hope and optimism because that's what a lot of kids in the west side community need,” said boxer Tyler Matthews.Stats may say Chicago’s west side has poverty, health issues, and violence, but The Bloc will tell you the stats aren’t looking at the people of this part of Chicago close enough.“If you’re a kid who maybe you’ve come up poor, maybe you don’t know where your next meal is coming from, maybe your parents are incarcerated, you’ve had challenges to overcome when you walk through these doors, you’re not at risk, you’re determined,” Cannon said. 3014

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A frightening scene for any family to witness was captured on video just before Valentine’s Day outside an East Chula Vista gas station. A clip posted to Facebook shows a man screaming racial obscenities at a female customer while the woman he’s with calmly pumps gas into their car.The incident reportedly happened at the Shell gas station at the Village Marketplace in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista at around 4 p.m., according to the victim.In a Facebook video post, the victim wrote that the man had approached her car and began shouting vulgarities then returned to his car. “No there is nothing done prior to this on my part. No there was nothing wrong that I knew of. No, there was no history," the victim wrote in the Facebook video post."No, I've never seen this couple before. No, there were no words exchanged between us, no eye contact, he just began to spew hateful commentary when he saw me get out to pump," the victim said.Sensing that something may happen, the victim used her cellphone to record the encounter, and that's when the man approached her again.The video shows a man with face and arm tattoos jumping out of the passenger seat of a light colored Nissan Versa hatchback. He approaches the victim’s car while flashing both middle fingers and screaming, “F*** n*****s!”The man then walked up to the victim’s vehicle and spit on the windshield.10News is not identifying the victim for her own protection.According to the victim, the couple drove away after the woman finished pumping gas.“I am beyond grateful that he, for some reason, changed his mind and did not spit on me or put his hands on me,” the victim said.The woman called Chula Vista Police about five hours after the confrontation at the gas station, according to Chula Vista Police Department Captain Phil Collum. Officers took information from the woman and followed up with her Friday to gather more information and documentation, Collum said. They will evaluate the evidence to see if it amounts to a criminal offense. Collum said police do not know the identity of the man seen in the video. “This is highly unusual,” said Collum. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - As the City of Chula Vista prepares to license legal recreational marijuana sales, law enforcement and a handful of other agencies are cracking down on illegal pot shops.In the last three years, they've shut down 44 of them. The city's cannabis information page on its website also lists a handful of locations that are currently facing lawsuits or other "enforcement actions."City officials say they're trying to make sure that when recreational marijuana sales become legal, only licensed stores are selling."That's our goal," says Deputy City Manager Kelley Bacon. "Our goal is to get 100% of the illegal operations shut down, and that's what we're working towards."The city has used a combination of zoning laws, fire inspections and other unspecified methods to shut down illegal shops. Recently, a SWAT raid at 1274 Third Avenue helped close a store operating on what some people have nicknamed the "green mile" because of a prevalence of marijuana-related businesses.Business owners in the neighborhood say they were glad to see the city take action."It was bad for us," says Paolo Passuello, who works at Ted's Garage on Third. "We'd come in the morning, and our driveway would be flooded with joints and little containers that the pot comes in. We're glad the city stepped in and did what they did."After the passage of Proposition 64 in 2016, which legalized recreational marijuana sales in California, individual cities had the discretion to decide how and when they'd allow it. Chula Vista chose to wait a few years and research what other cities and states did. They talked with people from across California, Colorado and other places to see what worked."We learned that you need to take it slow," says Bacon. "You need to make sure you write good, tight regulations and ordinances."In November of 2018, voters passed a city sales tax that allowed Chula Vista to start the process of licensing shops. The city plans to allow 12 shops total, 3 in each City Council district. Also, they'll only allow 2 of those shops to have store-fronts. They will also allow ten indoor cultivation businesses, which will be limited to 20,000 square feet each.The application process for those licenses will start sometime in January. A specific date will be posted on the city's website (see link above). Applicants will only have five days to submit an online application.Bacon says anyone who has already been known to operate an illegal shop will not be eligible to apply for a legal license.Even after the new, legal stores open, Bacon says the city will still target illegal shops."It's a little bit like whack-a-mole," she says. "You close one down and sometimes by the end of the day they've opened up in a different location."The city also has plans to start a criminal prosecution unit within the City Attorney's office explicitly targeting illegal shops and their owners. 2916

CHICAGO, Illinois (WGN) — Six people were rescued after an elevator suddenly stopped for several hours in the building formerly known as the John Hancock Center.Around 12:30 a.m. local time Friday, the group was leaving the Signature Room and the elevator was near the 95th floor when two cables broke, causing the elevator to stall near the 11th floor of Chicago’s fourth-tallest building.The elevator ride was faster than normal, those on it said. They later learned they fell 84 floors before their rescue, according to a report by The Chicago Tribune.Fire officials said the elevator was in a "blind shaft", which means there were no door openings.At about 3 a.m., firefighters broke through a brick wall in the parking garage to access the elevator and rescue the group, that included a pregnant woman.No one was injured or needed medical treatment.The John Hancock Center is Chicago's fourth-tallest building. 933
