America has a deadly addiction to opioids, and Aimee Sandefur has both the emotional and physical scars to prove it.“I got them right there,” she says, pointing to track marks on her arm. “I have abscess. That was an abscess where they had to cut my arm open.”Sandefur has overdosed dozens of times, saying she’s lucky to be alive.“I overdosed 35 times, and by the grace of God I’m clean and sober now,” she says. “I didn’t think I was going to make it.” In Dayton, Ohio, local leaders are calling opioid and heroin abuse a national epidemic. “I described it then as I do now as a mass fatality event,” says Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger. Dr. Harshbarger says in 2017, there were so many opioid-related deaths that his morgue ran out space to the store all the dead bodies.“Our numbers were astronomical,” he says. “We ended up with about 566 overdose deaths in 2017. But we’re a regional center, so we probably ended with 1,400 overdose deaths that we handle in 2017.” During that time, Dr. Harshbarger says up to 75 percent of all the cases his team handled were overdoses. Now, that number is down to 40 percent.“Oh my God. America has a huge problem with opioids,” says Helen Jones-Kelley, executive director of the Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug Dddiction & Mental Health Services. “Even though we’re seeing some of the numbers begin to drop, it hasn’t decreased the overall problem by any stretch.” Jones-Kelley says despite a decrease in overdoses people are still using and still dying from these drugs. In an attempt to keep users alive, her team has now changed its approach. “Before we used to just turn our heads. Now, we get involved,” she says. “We’re giving people information, so hopefully they won’t use but if they do, they use in a way that they won’t die.” Also helping to save more lives is the access to more NARCAN for more people. Some, however, say saving an addict only gives them another chance to do more drugs. “It’s a drug that, unfortunately, once it gets you it gets you,” says former opioid-turned-heroin user Daniel Duncan. After his prescription of pills ran out, Duncan turned to the streets to fill the void.“A lot of people--when they found out or I told them--they were like, “Not you, man. You’re black,’” he says. “It doesn’t discriminate.” After years of lying and stealing to feed his fix, Duncan was finally able to kick his opioid addiction, but only after serving time in jail. “I say there is hope. Don’t give up. Don’t give up at all,” he says. “You deserve much more than that. You’re better than that. It can be done.” While some can overcome their drug dependencies, others say they lost things that they can never get back.“My mom came beating on my door, and I’m like, ‘Mom, I don’t have no crack,’” Sandefur says. “And she’s like, ‘I know you have crack’ and I’m like, ‘Mom, I don’t have no crack; I have heroin.’”Sandefur says she unintentionally gave her mom a lethal dose of heroin. “Next thing you know I hear screaming downstairs, and my mom is lying on the living room floor blue in the face dead,” she says.Since her mother’s death, Sandefur says she hasn’t used drugs but that she ended her addiction too late.“I wish my mom was still here,” she says. 3246

Airlines are holding off on orders for Boeing's 737 Max — the latest sign of how deeply the company's best-selling jet has been thrown into crisis.Boeing released data Tuesday that showed only 10 of the planes were ordered in the first two months of 2019. There were no orders in March, the month that a 737 Max jet flown by Ethiopian Airlines pilots crashed in that country, killing everyone aboard. It was the second fatal crash involving a Max in recent months. That small number compares to 112 orders for the plane in the first quarter of 2018. At that time, Southwest Airlines had ordered 40 of the jets, while Ryanair ordered 25.Orders for Boeing's other commercial jets actually increased slightly. The company sold 85 other commercial jets last quarter, compared to 68 a year earlier. But the sales data for the Max gives the clearest picture yet of how much scrutiny of that model could be hurting Boeing's bottom line.Investigators are still probing the cause of the Ethiopian crash, as well as the other Max crash involving a Lion Air jet last October. The two accidents killed 346 people in all, and eventually prompted the grounding of all 737 Max planes last month. Boeing also halted deliveries and announced last week that it was scaling back production of the 737 Max.The focus of the crash investigations is the plane's automatic safety system, for which Boeing says it is developing a software fix. The fatal crashes are not the only cause of the sales drop, said Richard Aboulafia, aerospace analyst for the Teal Group. He attributed much of the change to the massive number of orders for the next generation of single-aisle jets that both Boeing and rival Airbus had previously booked.Airbus actually had worse first quarter orders for its A320, its 737 Max competitor."This is the mother of all frontloaded markets," said Aboulafia.Boeing has orders for 5,000 of the 737 Max jets on its books already. So far only one airline, Indonesia's Garuda, has outright canceled an order for 50 of the 737 Max jets since the grounding.Boeing also said Tuesday that all 737 deliveries in the first quarter fell by a third, to 89 from 132 a year ago. But most of that drop was caused by the reduced production and delivery of the older version of the 737 jet that Boeing is still building for some customers. Deliveries of the the older 737 jets fell by 66% to 32. Deliveries of the 737 Max increased by 54% compared to a year ago to 57, even with a two-week halt. That's because Boeing spent most of 2017 ramping up production of the Max. 2592

Dominique Decree's neck had visible injuries, police observed."Shana advised that all, including the children, were talking about suicide," the affidavit says. The women both have been charged with five counts of homicide and one count of conspiracy, the 849

A new pop-up called The Kitten Lounge is now open in D.C. It gives cat lovers the chance to hang out with kittens, while giving them the opportunity to save lives. “Really, I would describe this place as your chic best friend’s apartment filled with cats, but it’s like cool and trendy," says Kanchan Singh, who created the pop-up lounge. At The Kitten Lounge, 25 kittens roam free. The kittens are between the ages of three and six months, and visitors pay to hang out and play or relax with them.Singh owns 521

Amid signs that the global economy is slowing, American hiring nonetheless remains strong. In September, American employers added 136,000 jobs. The unemployment rate fell to 3.5%, which is the lowest rate since December 1969.Although the pace of hiring has slowed considerably since last year, this most recent report from the Labor Department showed some encouraging signs: Both July and August's jobs reports were revised higher by tens of thousands of jobs. Hispanic unemployment fell to 3.9%, setting a record low, while black unemployment remained at a record-low 5.5% Minority unemployment has been tracked by the Labor Department since the early 1970's.The nation's underemployment rate, which looks at people who are unemployed as well as those who are working part time but would prefer full time work, fell to 6.9%. That's the lowest reading for that measure since December 2000.The number of discouraged workers also fell was down to by more than 100,000 in September. That group includes people who are not in the labor force because they had stopped looking for work. The unemployment rate for adults with less than a high school education fell to 4.8%, the first time that measure has ever been below 5% on data dating back to 1992.The economy benefited from 1,000 new positions from the US Census. However, the massive GM strike, in which about 50,000 people joined picket lines, was not counted in this month's report. Also, wage growth stagnated. Paychecks grew by just 2.9% over the past year, which was lower than expected. 1550
