SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Bumble Bee Foods filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Thursday, facing criminal fines and civil litigation after the company pleaded guilty to a price-fixing scheme with rival seafood companies Starkist Co. and Chicken of the Sea Inc.Bumble Bee filed for bankruptcy protection in Wilmington, Delaware, listing up to billion in both assets and liabilities, according to a Los Angeles Times report. FCF Fishery Co. is expected to acquire the company's assets for more than 0 million through a competitive bidding process. Bumble Bee is currently owned by Lion Capital, an English private equity firm. The company pleaded guilty to the price-fixing scheme in 2017, admitting that the three companies conspired to raise the price of canned and packaged tuna in the U.S. from 2011 to 2013. The U.S. Department of Justice levied an .5-million fine against Bumble Bee and later slashed it to million due to Bumble Bee's outstanding debts.RELATED: StarKist admits fixing tuna prices, faces 0-million fine"The division, along with our law enforcement colleagues, will continue to hold these companies and their executives accountable for conduct that targeted a staple in American households," Andrew Finch, then the Justice Department Antitrust Division's acting assistant attorney general, said when Bumble Bee pleaded guilty in May 2017.At that time, Bumble Bee argued the original fine could drive it to bankruptcy. The company's court documents show that it still owes some million of the fine and faces multiple class-action lawsuits and litigation from companies that distribute and sell its products.Bumble Bee was founded in 1899 by the Columbia River Packers Association, which officially introduced the Bumble Bee brand of canned seafood in 1910. The company expanded to San Diego in 1977 when it purchased the Harbor Industry cannery. After 12 years in Kearny Mesa, the company moved its headquarters back to downtown San Diego in 2014, where it currently resides adjacent to Petco Park. 2052

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 2,686 new COVID-19 infections -- the 26th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases. On Saturday, there were no new virus-related deaths reported.Saturday was the 18th day with more than 2,000 new cases.Another 35 people also were hospitalized, according to Saturday's data, and another two were sent to intensive care units. The county's cumulative cases increased to 142,647 and the death toll remained at 1,402.Nine new community outbreaks were confirmed on Friday. There have been 57 confirmed outbreaks over the past seven days and 221 cases associated with those outbreaks.A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.A complete list of county COVID-19 testing sites, how to make appointments and hours can be found at www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/phs/community_epidemio logy/dc/2019-nCoV/testing/testing-schedule.html.Though county officials advised residents to avoid holiday gatherings, anyone who participated in a gathering was urged to get tested, as well as people who recently returned from travel, people with any symptoms and people at higher risk for COVID-19, whether or not they display symptoms. In advising against holiday gatherings, San Diego County Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Greg Cox pointed to a massive uptick in cases after Thanksgiving -- including the region's highest daily total coming three weeks after the holiday with 3,611 cases reported last Friday."We cannot ignore the reality that we are in a bad place right now," Cox said. "We're making a special plea to avoid large gatherings with those outside your immediate family. This one time, this one year."If people have already traveled, they should be extra cautious about spreading the virus, Cox said.According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, 44.1% of the county's cumulative cases have been reported after Thanksgiving. San Diego County is on pace to report another 600 deaths due to the virus before the end of January, she said."We don't want to see what happened after Thanksgiving happen again," Wooten said. "We must continue to stay apart to get the spread of the virus under control. If we don't, cases, hospitalizations and deaths will continue to soar."The 11-county Southern California region is still reporting zero available ICU beds. Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday the regional stay-at-home order he issued for all of Southern California will almost assuredly be extended beyond next week's expiration date.Current stay-at-home orders took effect at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 6, and were originally set to end on Monday. Newsom did not give an indication of when a decision on extending the orders will be made or much longer they will remain in place. 2874

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gas & Electric is requesting that the California Public Utilities Commission waive a state-mandated high usage fee that affected some 105,000 SDG&E customers during the summer months, the utility announced Tuesday.According to SDG&E, the fee causes electricity bills to spike during months when energy use is higher than normal. Customers who used more than 400 percent of their baseline allowance were charged for their high usage and could have saved roughly per month if they had not been charged. The utility have saved roughly per month if they had not been charged.``It was a challenging summer for our customers, particularly for people who experienced dramatic increases in their bills due, in part, to the high usage charge,'' said Scott Crider, SDG&E's vice president of customer services. ``We're committed to doing everything we can to develop proposals that provide some relief to high bills, and we're starting with requesting to eliminate this charge.''RELATED: San Diego Gas & Electric address high power billsSDG&E is also considering eliminating seasonal pricing, paying out the California Climate Credit as a lump sum in August to offset high energy use during summer and conducting a revised baseline allowance study. Those three changes in accordance with the elimination of the high usage fee would deliver significant cost savings to utility customers, according to the company.SDG&E doesn't know when the commission may rule on the request, but the company hopes to get rid of the high usage charge before summer 2019.Residents can also avoid high usage charges by enrolling in one of the utility's time-of-use pricing plans at sdge.com/whenmatters. 1741

The other ALDS series will be played at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles beginning Oct. 5.Both series will be played on five consecutive days. The winners of the two ALDS series will advance to the best-of-seven American League Championship Series, which will be played in San Diego beginning Oct. 11, also with no days off between games. For the National League, divisional rounds will be played in Arlington, Texas, and Houston, with the NLCS played in Arlington. The best-of-seven World Series will be played in Arlington, beginning Oct. 20, with two off days built into the schedule. The initial round of the MLB playoffs, the best-of-three Wild Card Series, will be played in the home stadium of the higher-seeded team.MLB games are being played without fans in attendance due to the coronavirus, but according to The Athletic, league Commissioner Rob Manfred said during an online event Tuesday that he hopes to see some limited attendance at the league's two Championship Series and the World Series. Such attendance would involve social distancing and other protection measures, "in terms of temperature checks and the like," he said. 1792

San Diego County is home to 82,623 health care workers working in hospital or psychiatric facilities, and 39,755 of them are considered ``highest risk'' and will first receive vaccines. An undisclosed number of vaccines for military personnel arrived at Naval Medical Center San Diego and Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton last week as well. With intensive-care unit capacity still officially considered to be zero across the 11-county Southern California region, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday the regional stay-at-home order imposed by the state for the entirety of Southern California will almost assuredly be extended beyond next week's expiration date.``We are likely, I think it's pretty self-evident, going to need to extend those regional dates,'' Newsom said. ``... Based upon all the data and based upon all these trend lines, it is very likely based on those current trends that we'll need to extend that stay at home order, (which) you recall was a three-week order when we announced it.''The stay-at-home order took effect at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 6, and was originally set to end on Dec. 28. Newsom did not give an indication of exactly when a decision on extending the order will be made, or much long the order will remain in place.Of 28,383 tests reported Monday in San Diego County, 11% returned positive, raising the 14-day average to 9.5%.There was one new outbreak reported, which brings the total number of outbreaks within the last seven days to 40. 3469
