SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – All orphaned dogs and nearly all cats at the Helen Woodward Animal Center found a home for the holidays, the center announced Thursday. A total of 64 dogs and 35 cats were adopted between December 17 and 23. The “Home 4 the Holidays” campaign started in 1999 in an effort to encourage winter-season pet seekers to choose adoption. Empty kennels give the center the opportunity to save more animals. A new group of orphaned dogs and cats are being transported to the center and will arrive before January. “This is like a little Christmas miracle,” explained Center Operations Director Jennifer Shorey. “We are delighted to help extend this bit of magic into the New Year.” 699

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An 87-year-old man was beaten during a home invasion in Clairemont Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, the incident happened on the 4600 block of Firestone Street at 3:02 p.m. Police say three men forced their way into the 87-year-old man’s home before beating and robbing him. "All of a sudden three guys come plowing through my front door, said 'this is a robbery.' I said, 'Come on ... I got nothing here for you.' Which didn’t dissuade them," said Paul Schmidt. Schmidt told 10News he was working on a ceiling fan with the door open when the men broke in. “I had scissors laying there, he grabbed the scissors and he threatened me with it. He said, 'There’s three of us and one of you, and we’re robbing you.' And what could I do, maybe one or two guys I can handle, but three ..." Schmidt added. Schmidt says he fought back, grabbing one of the robber's beards before one of the men held scissors to his throat. "The guy with the beard, he was the meanest, he seemed to be the lead, but he was higher than a kite," Schmidt said. The robbers were able to get away with Schmidt's wallet as well as his red pickup truck and some smaller items. Police arrested two suspects in the attack on July 25. Both suspects have, as of Monday, been charged with robbery, elder abuse and auto theft.The suspects were identified as John Slobig, 59 and Terry Jones, 53. Police say a third suspect is still outstanding and the victim’s vehicle was returned. 1489

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After San Diego leaders passed an ordinance allowing people to sleep in their vehicles, a group of critics say they're ready to camp in front of the Mayor’s house to reverse course or address the matter another way."I don’t think they realize that vehicle habitations were the beach community’s biggest problem,” said Racheal Allen, who's a part of the coalition opposed to vehicle habitations on residential streets. The new coalition is fighting against the City Council’s decision to repeal a decades-old ordinance that had prohibited people from living in vehicles on city streets. Now that it’s legal again the group says vans and RVs are creating homeless camps in their neighborhoods.RELATED: Allowing homeless to live in vehicles is causing problems, residents say“We have literally witnessed buckets of waste being thrown out of some of these vehicles," Allen said. "I’ve seen drug dealing out of some of the vehicles, we’ve seen bike chop shops operating."All of this, just in the month that living in vehicles has been legal again. She proposed South Shores parking lot because of the 200 spots and access to bathrooms.Allen said she recently received an email from the Mayor's office saying, “we are actively pursuing a new ordinance to address the public’s concerns.”"We have to put our foot down," Allen said.Members of the coalition told 10News they don’t support a plan of using South Shores or anything that close to the beach because of the impact it could have on the environment. 2483

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police officer escaped injury when a driver reportedly tried to run him over Sunday morning.The incident happened around 1 a.m. near the intersection of F and Sixth Streets in the Gaslamp district.The officer was able to jump off his bicycle, which was dragged beneath the suspect’s vehicle. Police say the driver ditched his car and fled the scene.Police said Sunday that they are still searching for the suspect.No description of the suspect or suspect vehicle were given. 514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An atmospheric river is set to bring widespread showers -- which could lead to flooding -- to San Diego County the next week.Rain is expected to come down Monday afternoon and finally taper off Thursday, with the most widespread and heavy rainfall coming Tuesday.Initial forecasts show rain totaling 1 to 3 inches for most areas of San Diego, with up to 5 inches of snow in some mountain locations, according to 10News weather anchor Vanessa Paz.WEATHER: 10News' updated forecast for San Diego CountyAccording to the National Weather Service, localized flooding will be possible Tuesday and typically dry desert areas will see significant flow. Thunderstorms will also be possible in some areas.Heavy showers are expected to continue Wednesday morning, with more roadway and local flooding possible, NWS reported.Thursday, if showers continue, flooding could continue to be an issue. Though, currently showers are expected to ease. Showers are expected to move out of the county by Friday.The showers are expected to help San Diego's reservoirs for the rest of the year.
