INDIANAPOLIS -- Former Roncalli High School students say the controversy brewing after a guidance counselor says she was asked to resign over her same-sex marriage sheds light on a culture of intolerance at the Indianapolis school that has been going on for years. In 2012 after two students took their own lives, classmates say they formed an after-school group called "Rebels 4 Acceptance." Some of them were dealing with bullying issues, some with mental health issues and others issues involving their LGBT status. "It definitely would not have been safe for one of my classmates to come out, not entirely anyway," said Andria McHugh, class of 2013. "They may have been fearful if they did. Just of judgment."The group's founding members say it was meant to be a safe place for all students to find acceptance. The group met every few weeks to talk about what they were going through and how they could make school more inclusive for everybody. But after less than a year, the group says their club was shut down by school administrators. "They had seen it as encouraging homosexual behavior,' said Kendall Wood, class of 2014. Counselor Shelly Fitzgerald has been placed on administrative leave after she says someone sought out her marriage certificate showing she was married to another woman and gave it to the school. In a statement released Monday, Roncalli has said the expectations and teachings of the Catholic Church are clearly defined in employee contracts and job descriptions. Fitzgerald says she has been overwhelmed by the support she's seeing from the community and her students."I mean, it's a great message for my daughter more importantly than anything," said Fitzgerald. "It's a great message for our students and our community at Roncalli because it's what we've taught them all along. Be kind to each other, take care of each other, be welcoming to each other and do it with Jesus in your heart."WRTV has reached out to Roncalli High School administrators and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis for comment about the students' claims and about Fitzgerald's status with the school. As of Tuesday evening, neither has responded to our requests. You can watch Fitzgerald's full interview below.      2318

In post-Brexit Britain, trips to the European Union will get a little more expensive for millions of Brits in search of a continental break. The European Commission confirmed on Friday that UK travelers will be required fill out an online form and cough up €7 (.90) for visa-free travel, which will be valid for three years.Natasha Bertaud, a spokeswoman for the commission's President Jean-Claude Juncker, likened the "simple form" to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) scheme used by the United States -- which requires travelers to pay to apply for permission to enter the country. She also pointed out that the EU's version, called ETIAS, will be "way cheaper."But this all comes with a major caveat. If the UK crashes out of the EU with no agreement in place, Brits will be required to get a visa to travel to the EU, a commission spokeswoman told Reuters on Friday.ETIAS, which is expected to come into force in 2021, will apply to countries outside the EU whose citizens can currently travel in Europe visa free. There are currently 61 such countries, including the United States, Israel and Singapore. It will cover the so-called Schengen group of 26 European countries that share largely open land borders. The electronic visa waiver system was conceived to "identify any security or irregular migratory risks posed by visa-exempt visitors traveling to the Schengen area while at the same time facilitate crossing frontiers for the vast majority of travelers who do not pose such risks,"?according to the commission. 1554

INTERACTIVE MAPS: HILL & WOOLSEY FIRE | CAMP FIRECALABASAS, Calif. (KGTV) ¡ª The Woolsey Fire ripped through a Calabasas neighborhood late Friday night, causing panic to neighbors who tried to stay behind to protect their home."You got these firebombs falling down, and the wind is blowing them all this way," Allen Nelson described of palm fronds catching fire, raining down on homes causing them to go up in smoke.Neighbors told 10News the fire wasn't a steady line that inched closer, instead fueled by strong Santa Ana winds that brought embers skipping over roofs and lighting patches feet ahead of the fire line.RELATED: How to help California wildfire victimsThey said it felt like the fire leaped toward their neighborhood."A huge wall of flames, I had evacuated in a panic with my kids and my cats," Tina Leeney said."When it came that time, we didn't even have a minute and it was like oh my gosh and I got my parents out and I was like you have to leave," Nelson said.He stayed behind, determined to protect his parents' home, perched on his roof, garden hose at the ready.RELATED: Hollywood's Western Town at Paramount Ranch destroyed in Woolsey Fire"I at some point got off my roof, climbed up that Juniper tree that you can see so I could get my hose up on because the flames on her roof were this high," Nelson said, referencing about two feet between his hands. He called out to a firefighter nearby and pleaded for him to spray the corner of her house to extinguish the flame."He's totally my hero," Leeney said when she came back to check on the neighborhood and climbed onto his roof she heard what he'd done and started crying and thanking him.RELATED: Tips for navigating a wildfire evacuationHe was modest taking her appreciation, and while he was glad to help save his neighbors' homes on either side of his parents' home, he is devastated looking across the street."It's just heartbreaking," Nelson said with a sigh. 2016

In proximity, the United States and Canada couldn¡¯t be closer.  But when it comes to gun control, the two countries couldn¡¯t be further apart. ¡°A majority of the people do not feel the need to have a gun because we¡¯re quite safe,¡± says Debbie Thorburn, a Windsor, Ontario resident. In Canada, they talk about guns differently because they look at guns differently.¡°You have the Second Amendment,¡± said Brian Green, a manager at General Guns in Windsor. ¡°We don¡¯t.¡±Detroit, Michigan saw 302 homicides in 2016, with most involving a firearm. Across the river in Windsor, during the same time, there were only three. ¡°I would think that most Canadians are squeamish around firearms and don¡¯t want any part of it,¡± said Al Frederick, Windsor¡¯s police chief. ¡°The difference, I think in my view, is the accessibility to firearms,¡± he said. ¡°We don¡¯t have a culture of people that are eager to carry or seek out to carry a firearm.¡±In Canada, unlike the U.S., it¡¯s a crime for the average citizen to even walk around with a gun.  But that¡¯s far from the only thing separating the two countries.A first-time gun buyer in the United States can walk into a store and leave with a gun the same day; in Canada, it can take months. The U.S. still allows for some gun purchases without a background check. That¡¯s not the case in Canada, where they¡¯re mandatory for any gun license. ¡°Your file is given to an officer and it¡¯s their job to go through it and prove that you are able to have a license,¡± said Brian Green of General Guns. While there¡¯s often a push to expand gun rights in the U.S., in Canada there are few leading that fight. As one Canadian told The Now this week, ¡°Guns are a right where you live. They¡¯re a privilege where we live.¡±¡°I don¡¯t think there¡¯s a nation on Earth where they have armed their citizenry which has reduced violence,¡± Chief Frederick said. 1909
