SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community members rallied Thursday to send a message to developers looking to build in Barrio Logan. This comes after a developer tried to bring an 80-room hotel to the area, but neighbors opposed it.Neighbors are worried the developers coming in would change the culture of the community. "I don't feel good at all. I think in the past, Barrio Logan has been assaulted and insulted," said resident David Heaney. "I'm afraid that they're going to go against the plan again, and there will be some kind of shenanigans where there the City Council will say it's done."Heaney has been living in his Barrio Logan home since 1998. It sits directly across from the proposed development site on Newton Avenue. Last summer, a developer wanted to put a hotel at the location, but due to opposition from the community, it will now be a mixed-use space. Community members say there is simply no room for a project like a hotel or other large businesses because of the lack of parking in the area. Neighbors must have parking permits to park in the area. 10News reached out to developer Douglas W. Hamm, who initially proposed putting a hotel in the space. He sent a statement that read, in part: "I conveyed that I have zero interest in trying to build a project in their neighborhood that the community is not supportive of, much less opposes. All the passengers have now disembarked, along with the vast majority of the crew.Both ships are down to minimal staffing levels of about 80 crew members to maintain the vessels and keep them operational, said Royal Caribbean Cruises spokesman Jonathon Fishman.“As of now, they expect to stay in this position through the summer until our return to service plans are finalized,” Fishman said via email.The ships occasionally pull into port to refuel, but otherwise stay anchored off the coast to avoid port fees that can exceed ,000 a day.When cruise ships pull into port with passengers, companies pay significantly higher fees, ranging from ,000 to ,000 per call, Page said.There were 28 canceled calls due to the pandemic, resulting in roughly million in lost revenue for the Port of San Diego, Page said, plus a staggering ripple effect for the region’s economy.The Port of San Diego estimates that each time a cruise ship visits San Diego as a midpoint in its journey, known in the industry as a “visitation,” the call generates 0,000 in regional economic impact as travelers visit local shops, restaurants and other businesses.Each time a cruise ship starts and ends its journey in San Diego, known as a “homeport,” the regional economic loss is about million, Page said.Using those estimates, the 28 canceled calls resulted in as much as million in regional economic impact.Cruise ships are working with the CDC and other medical professionals to establish safety standards once sailing is allowed to resume, and industry insiders expect the new guidelines may mirror ones recently adopted in Europe.“The European Union has issued guidelines for cruises operating in Europe, which include things like onboard separation by age group, reduced capacity, and COVID testing of all passengers,” said Doug Shupe, a spokesman for the Auto Club of Southern California.Shupe said interest in cruising remains high among Triple-A members, but members are mostly booking cruises for 2021.“We’ve seen that our bookings for 2021, for cruises, are actually higher than what they were this time last year,” he said.He said many cruise lines offered passengers with canceled bookings credits worth up to 125% of their original value. 3313

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cleanup is underway after a driver went on a rampage, hitting three cars before crashing into an apartment building in North Park.  "I heard just a really loud bang noise and I felt the apartment shutter," said Laura C, a resident in that building.It started when police say the 60-year-old driver hit an electrical box while getting on the 805 southbound from El Cajon Boulevard. He went down an embankment and continued south before crashing into a car on the highway. The driver kept going and got off on University Avenue. That's when he crashed into two more cars and a pole near Boundary Street. He then put the car into reverse and plowed through a gas station and into the apartment building wall. "Out of nowhere he just went full blast in reverse until that building stopped him," said witness, Vicki Nikbakht. Police believe the driver may have been under the influence of drugs. Residents were evacuated in fear that the building would collapse. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No one else was hurt.  1110

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Seaworld San Diego reopens its doors this weekend, an East County grandmother and passholder says she and her grandson won't be making a visit.Visiting SeaWorld is one of Rose Becker's favorite things to do with her 4-year-old grandson Vincent."He just loves walking around and looking at the dolphins, orcas, and sea lions," said Becker.So when SeaWorld announced they would be reopening, she got excited.RELATED: Several San Diego County businesses to reopen indoors with limits under new guidance"I was planning on taking him Sunday. Was so excited to hear SeaWorld was back open. My grandson was so excited ... and then my excitement, down to frustration," said Becker.She was frustrated because of the cost. SeaWorld is opening through its weekend Zoo Days Bayside BBQ and Brews events. It's reservation only with a limited capacity. The park's attractions will be limited to outdoor animal exhibits and shows. A ticket will include food, drink, and merchandise. Passholders like Becker get a complimentary ticket but must pay for the lanyard for the food and beverages. In the past few days, ABC 10News has received emails and Facebook messages from passholders upset about having to pay for the extra cost."We're being treated like second class citizens in essence," said Becker.SeaWorld plans to hold the weekend events until late September, and then reassess a true opening. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Consumer prices rose by nearly four percent in San Diego over the last year largely due to an increase in the cost of gasoline, according to a new report by the U.S. Department of Labor. According to the report, prices in the San Diego area rose 3.8 percent over the last 12 months and 1 percent over the last two months. The largest increases stem from household furnishings and operations and housing, which rose by 9.3 and 5.2 percent over the last year. The report points out that an increase in prices for food and energy over the last two months was fueled by higher gas prices. The energy index jumped 11.4 percent over the last two months mainly due to higher gas prices, according to the report. Over the last year, food from home increased by more than 2 percent while food away from home actually decreased by 0.4 percent. California's gas tax will jump by another 5.6 cents per gallon on July 1, 2019. Although the report may seem discouraging, the cost increases were at least partially offset by a 1.1 percent price decline in education and communication. The report shows that items like cereal and baked goods were up by nearly 2 percent from May of 2018 to March of 2019. Apparel was up by more than 6 percent from May of 2018 to March of 2019. Milk and dairy products also rose by 2 percent in the same time period. Consumer prices increased in a similar way in neighboring Los Angeles. Over the last year, prices in Los Angeles rose by more than three percent, but May only saw prices rise by 0.2 percent. The report shows that the cost of household goods and operations rose by nearly 6 percent while housing jumped 4.4 percent. In the west as a whole, consumer prices rose by nearly 3 percent while increasing by 0.5 percent in May.
