You cough, have a sore throat, maybe a fever. Is it the flu or COVID-19?Health officials have been warning all summer that this fall and winter could be brutal, with the seasonal flu season in addition to the coronavirus pandemic. Some are calling it a potential “twindemic,” two pandemics at once.Nearly every health official, from small town clinics to the CDC is recommending everyone get the flu vaccine this year. While the flu shot is not shown to protect against coronavirus, medical experts say it will keep you healthy this fall and winter and therefore more able to fight the coronavirus if you get it.Wearing a mask also helps protect against both the flu and COVID-19, since both are transmitted through the air, when an infected person breathes, coughs, sings, talks, etc. and nearby people inhale the small particles of the virus in the air. Droplets can also land on surfaces, so washing your hands often and keeping your hands away from your face is also good advice to stop the spread of both. The flu virus and coronavirus have many symptoms in common. Including:Fever or feeling feverish/chillsCoughShortness of breath or difficulty breathingFatigue (tiredness)Sore throatRunny or stuffy noseMuscle pain or body achesHeadacheSome people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adultsAnd both can infect a person with no symptoms. Both the flu and COVID-19 can result in serious complications, like pneumonia or death. What’s different? COVID-19 has been linked to a sudden change or a loss in your sense of smell or taste. It also, on average, takes longer for COVID-19 symptoms to appear after infection. On average, if you are exposed to the flu, symptoms appear in 1-4 days. COVID-19 patients report anywhere from 2-14 days between exposure and symptoms. The CDC estimates that between October 1, 2019 to April 4, 2020, roughly 40 to 56 million Americans got the flu virus. Of those, between 24,000 to 62,000 Americans died from flu-related causes. These are estimates because many people self-treat and recover from the flu at home without seeing a healthcare professional, so the tracking may be off. However, the CDC estimates flu cases will be higher in 2020 because of the overlap with the coronavirus and an increase in testing to rule out COVID-19 infections. 2326

"Constant chaos," said Carrie, describing what it's like to raise triplets. "We've supported them no matter what they wanted to do."Larry and Carrie found out they were having triplets just two weeks before moving from New York to Phoenix. The couple already had two children. Hayley, Ian and Andrew Mase were all born one minute apart, joined ROTC in high school, and are now all three enlisting in the Marine Corps. Andrew, the youngest of the three, was the first to enlist and is currently in combat training. Hayley, the oldest sibling, is preparing to travel across the country for boot camp in February, and Ian will follow suit, hoping to begin boot camp in March."They've always been very close, as you would expect," said Larry."We can understand what we're trying to say to each other without actually saying it," said Ian.The triplet's enrollment in the military will be the first time they are separated for an extended period of time. "I know being apart will be kind of hard, but once we get back together it's like there was no time apart," said Hayley. "More of like a 'see you later.'"In light of the attacks in the Middle East, Hayley, Ian and Andrew's parents are naturally worried for their children's safety, and the potential that they will be deployed to a combat zone. "That's been weighing in our minds big time," said Carrie. "Knowing that all three of them have a potential to be deployed, that's a tough thing for a mom.""Knowing that this is their decision and that it's really their dream, it helps a little," said Larry. The soon-to-be empty-nesters will also have to prepare for their new lives without any kids in the home."We're definitely going to downsize," said Larry."They'll probably enjoy the quiet," said Ian.This story was originally published by Adam Waltz at KNXV. 1810

WYNNEWOOD, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma zoo featured in Netflix's "Tiger King" documentary has closed after federal authorities investigated it for alleged maltreatment of animals and suspended its license. The Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park closed to the public after the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Monday suspended Jeff Lowe's exhibitor license. Lowe, who's the current owner of the zoo, posted on Facebook that they would no longer "exhibit animals to the public.""I no longer want to exhibit animals to the public," the Facebook post read. "We have been contemplating this for weeks. I will still allow my lawyers to prove the USDA is dead wrong. And BTW, the USDA didn’t take my license. They issued a 21 days suspension. Day 22, I could open right back up if I wanted. I don’t want to. The animals are now in private hands and will remain in private hands."The zoo, previously run by Joseph Maldonado-Passage, also known as Joe Exotic, became famous after being featured in Netflix's "Tiger King" docuseries. KFOR-TV reports that local and federal authorities investigated the zoo after receiving a formal report that documented photos showing a lion with its ears covered in flies and another with the tips of its ears covered in blood. 1261
