BEIJING, Otc. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- The more coffee people consume, the less likely they develop the most common form of skin cancer, a new study suggests, according to media reports Tuesday."Our study indicates that coffee consumption may be an important option to help prevent basal cell carcinoma," stated Fengju Song, lead researcher of the study and a postdoctoral fellow in the department of dermatology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is reported to be a slow-growing form of skin cancer that accounts for 75 percent of all skin cancers. It is the most common type of skin cancer, with nearly one million new cases diagnosed each year in the United States.Although BCC is hardly fatal, if ignored, there may be consequences of treatment, including disfigurement, according to a USA Today report.The US researchers found that women who drank over three cups of coffee a day were 20 percent less likely to develop BCC, whereas the risk of having BCC for men who consumed more than three cups per day lowered 9 percent.To get the findings, the researchers analysed data from almost113,000 people between1984-2008 and over 23,000 were diagnosed with BCC.The researchers agreed that caffeinated coffee was associated with BCC risk reduction, but decaffeinated coffee did not have such effect.According to a Fox News report, besides cutting the risk of skin cancer, coffee consumption has also been found to lower the risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer and cancer overall."To the best of our knowledge, coffee consumption is a healthy habit," said Fengju Song, cited by the Fox News.The findings were presented Monday at the American Association for Cancer Research International Conference in Boston and not yet published in a scientific journal.

TAIPEI, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A televised debate among three candidates for Taiwan's next deputy leader was staged Saturday, highlighting cross-Strait political and economic issues, for next month's Taiwan leader election.The three candidates touched upon topics such as stances on the reunification of Taiwan and the Chinese mainland and the "Taiwan independence," last year's signing of the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), among other cross-Strait issues, during the second face-to-face debate before the Jan. 14, 2012 election.Wu Den-yih, who is incumbent Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou's running mate and currently chief of Taiwan's executive authority, said the signing of the ECFA aims to "help people do business and enhance Taiwan's competitiveness." BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, began here Monday to deliberate draft interpretations on two annexes of the Basic Law of the Macao concerning election issues.Li Fei, deputy director of the Commission of Legislative Affairs of the NPC Standing Committee, explained the draft interpretations to lawmakers.The Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region (Macao SAR) was adopted in 1993 and went into effect on Dec. 20, 1999.Annex I to the Basic Law provides a method for selecting the SAR's chief executives while Annex II sets the method for the formation of its legislative assembly.Clause 7 of Annex I of the Basic Law says that if there is a need to amend the method for selecting the Chief Executives for 2009, and the terms subsequent to the year 2009, such amendments must be made with endorsement of a two-thirds majority of all the members of the Legislative Council and the consent of the Chief Executive, and they shall be reported to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for approval.Clause 3 of Annex II says that if there is a need to amend the method of forming the Legislative Assembly of the Macao Special Administrative Region in and after 2009, such amendments must be made with the endorsement of a two-thirds majority of all the members of the Assembly and the consent of the Chief Executive, and they shall be reported to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for the record.Li said that the phase "if there is a need to amend ..." should mean that they may or may not be amended.The decision-making on whether such necessity exists is reserved to the central authorities, or the NPC standing committee, said Li, adding that the Macao SAR government, rather than members of the Legislative Assembly, individually or jointly, should be the proper entity to propose any such amendments.Li also explained that if no amendment to the methods is adopted, the two Annexes should still apply.The full text of draft has not been made public yet, but the points raised by Li are identical to those in the committee's prior interpretations on Hong Kong SAR's Basic Law in 2004.During the deliberation, members of the committee noted that draft would help to safeguard Macao's long-term prosperity and stability.They also believed that it was "proper and necessary" to adopt the draft during this week's session as Macao's chief executive Fernando Chui Sai On had made the issue of modifying the method a "major work" in his policy address for the fiscal year 2012.Chui's statement recognized that "there is agreement that it is appropriate to properly modify the two methods in order to adapt to society's development and progress" and promised to "submit a proposal on whether to modify and - if so - how to modify the methods."Macao expects the formation of its fifth Legislative Assembly in 2013, and the selection of its fourth Chief Executive in 2014.

BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Even a slightly high blood pressure is considered dangerous to largely increase the stroke risk, a new study found.The finding was published Wednesday on the online edition of U.S. medical journal Neurology.In the study, researchers found people who have pre-hypertension, whose blood pressure measured between normal and high, are 55 percent more likely to suffer a stroke compared with normal people.The study involved data from 12 previous studies on blood pressure and stroke occurrence of some 500,000 adults.About one in three U.S. adults suffer from pre-hypertension, which is defined at a systolic blood pressure between 120 and 139 or a diastolic blood pressure between 80 and 89, according to the U.S. Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure."People who do fall into the higher range of pre-hypertension should modify their lifestyle as much as possible," suggested Dr. Bruce Ovbiagele, director of the Olive View-UCLA Stroke Program and leading author of the study.Stroke is the number three cause of death, killing more than 130,000 in the U.S. a year, according to a CBS report.
