With ventilators hard to find amid the spread of the coronavirus, families across the world worked together to find a ventilator for a child in Ecuador. Wilson, at age 18 months, is at an age one half of children with Centronuclear Myopathy don't get to see."At the beginning, they didn’t get any diagnosis, it was 5 months until they got the diagnosis. The first months it was very uncertain what was going to happen. They had no idea and because of the disease is very, very uncommon and rare, the doctor had no idea," said Jen Bilbao, translator for the family."These children are born very weak, a majority of them do not breathe spontaneously on their own. They cannot eat orally, cannot sit up on their own," said Alison Frase, Joshua Frase Foundation cofounder.That means they need a ventilator, something that was in short supply here in the U.S. just a few weeks ago, but is nearly impossible to find in Ecuador. Frase's son, Joshua, was born with Myotubular Myopathy in 1995. He passed away 15 years later. And in his death, Alison started the Joshua Frase Foundation and an equipment exchange program."That’s the first family we have in Ecuador because normally the children there with this kind of diseases, unfortunately they don’t survive because there is not equipment," said Bilbao. "It’s very, very hard for them to go home so there’s little that they can do for them."Bilbao used to live in Ecuador. Now, she’s in Germany. She started CNM – Together Strong!, an association that helps families with centronuclear myopathies in Germany after her son was born with Myotubular Myopathy. Wilson’s parents got ahold of her after finding information online in Spanish — asking for help finding a ventilator so they could bring Wilson home."She was very desperate because she thought she was going to be at the hospital her whole life," Bilbao said, translating for Wilson's mom.Bilbao reached out to Frase to see if there was anything she could do to help."I was scrambling making posts on our private groups looking for the equipment to piecemeal this ventilator together," said Frase. "I knew I had a ventilator from, unfortunately, a child, actually a young man, that had passed this year, and I reached out to that mom, and she said absolutely you can have it."The ventilator came from a family in Utah, the plug, connectors, and other parts from another family in Utah, and the humidifier from a family in Texas. They were shipped to Bilbao’s brother who still lives in Ecuador to take to the family."We couldn’t ship it to the hospital because they were feeling that it’s going to get lost at the hospital. Then where they live there’s no post office because they don’t live in the city they live outside the city, it’s very hard for the post to get packages to them," said Bilbao.For Wilson’s parents, this gift is more than just a medical device."They felt really like they could breathe again. So it was not only a breath for their child, but a breath for them because they didn’t know what to do. And to know that somebody was going to help, it was very peaceful," said Bilbao. 3107

And proper maintenance protects the taxpayer's investment.Rancho Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Gabrielle Crawford closed the school's football field when tests showed it wasn't safe.Her heart goes out to the team this season. She says they've stuck together, worked hard "...and they're the ones practicing in all that equipment in 115 degrees in the summer and they don't get to use the field," Ms. Crawford says.The Rancho field is slated to be replaced for next season.In the meantime, the Holzhauers say Rancho can use the ,000 wherever it's most needed for athletics.And they challenge others to join in and help out."It's important to remember we have a lot of schools in other areas that need help. So for a call to action," says Melissa. "You don't have to pick Rancho! You can pick Rancho!. But also just any way that people can help to give back. From my understanding talking to [Darcy's producer] and Darcy there are a lot of unsafe fields throughout our community. And lots of ways that people can help.'While the Holzhauers are committed to helping youth, we're committed to accountability.Once again we asked the District for G-Max testing results and maintenance schedules for all five turf fields to try and track how things got so bad. They told us Indian Springs had one G-Max test back in 2008 when the field was installed, but then nothing for any of the schools until this year after Rancho raised alarm bells and forced action. Workers have a right to safety by law, but an advocacy group claims its new report proves those laws aren't being enforced.The National Employment Law Project (NELP) analyzed data from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) from April to early August and found more than 1,700 workers filed complaints, saying their employers retaliated against them for raising coronavirus safety concerns.NELP tells us they've even heard from workers who asked for masks and were fired. More than half of the complaints were dismissed without investigation, while 2% were investigated and resolved by OSHA.“Instead of an agency that's there to assure that workers have a safe workplace, it's there to assure that you know large employers that want to violate the law that they get off the hook,” said Debbie Berkowitz, Director of the NELP Worker Health and Safety Program.Berkowitz is one of the authors of the report. She worked at OSHA under the Obama administration. She says the agency should've acted with “emergency temporary standards” for safety during the pandemic.“But instead, the administration has done almost no enforcement in this pandemic to protect workers against employers that flagrantly violate the CDC guidelines, because they're just guidelines, they're not mandatory,” said Berkowitz.Berkowitz thinks there would be more complaints if workers felt protected.If you are punished for speaking up, she says you should still file a complaint with OSHA within 30 days. Even if it's dismissed, she's still advocating for people to share their stories.“We need to understand what working people are facing, especially our essential workers who are working outside of the home, and we need to make sure that we're protecting these workers,” said Berkowitz.In a statement to The Washington Post, OSHA said it's committed to these investigations.
