Weld County prosecutors on Monday formally charged 33-year-old Chris Watts with nine felony counts, including first-degree murder, in regards to the deaths of his pregnant wife, Shanann Watts, and their two young daughters.Watts faces three counts of first-degree murder after deliberation, two counts of first-degree murder – victim under 12/position of trust, one count of first-degree unlawful termination of a pregnancy, and three counts of tampering with a deceased human body, according to Colorado court records and documents filed Monday afternoon.READ: Affidavit: Chris Watts was having affair, claimed wife tried to kill daughters before he killed herAt a Monday afternoon news conference, District Attorney Michael Rourke declined to further discuss any details of the case. But Shanann Watts' father, Frank Rzucek, gave a brief statement: "We would like to thank everyone in the Frederick Police Department and all the agencies involved for working so hard to find my daughter, granddaughters and [unborn child] Nico," Rzucek said. "Thank you everyone for coming out to the candlelight vigil and sending all your prayers. They are greatly appreciated. And keep the prayers coming for our family. Thank you very much.”The unlawful termination of a pregnancy charge comes because Shanann Watts was 15 weeks pregnant at the time she was killed. The documents state: "The woman died as a result of the unlawful termination of the pregnancy.". Former Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett explained the statute in an interview with KMGH Friday. The documents show there are at least 72 witnesses in the case so far – most of whom are law enforcement officers. The affidavit for Chris Watts' arrest was ordered unsealed Monday and was released Monday afternoon. It says that Chris Watts was having an affair that he had previously denied to police, and that he claimed that Shanann had tried to strangle their daughters after he told her he wanted to separate. The affidavit also backs up some of what KMGH has reported so far and what neighbors have said about the case.Watts was arrested late last Wednesday for investigation on first-degree murder and tampering with deceased body charges and has been held without bond ever since.MORE: Everything we know so far about the Watts family murdersHis pregnant wife and daughters, 34-year-old Shanann Watts, 3-year-old Celeste and 4-year-old Bella, were reported missing last Monday by a family friend after Shanann missed a doctor’s appointment.A day after the three were reported missing, Chris Watts gave an interview to KMGH in which he pleaded for the girls to come home and said he and his wife “had an emotional conversation” before he allegedly last saw her. Watts confessed to killing the three of them, two law enforcement sources told KMGH last week.Shanann’s body was discovered in a field on Anadarko Petroleum Company property. Court documents show her body was found in a "shallow grave near an oil tank." Her daughter’s bodies were discovered concealed within oil tanks nearby, sources told KMGH. Court documents filed late last week show experts were advised the bodies were in tanks filled with crude oil "for several days." Chris Watts had been an Anadarko employee but was fired by the company Wednesday. On Friday, the coroner's office announced they had positively identified the bodies as those of Shanann Watts and her two daughters. The manner and cause of death of all three bodies are pending further laboratory results and have not been released at this time.Weld County prosecutors said in court last week they believed the two girls and their mother were killed inside the home but did not elaborate. Frederick police said Friday they still had several days of interviews to complete before Monday's deadline.Watts is scheduled to appear in court at 10 a.m. Tuesday to learn the formal charges he faces in the case. 3953

WASHINGTON (AP) — The two most senior officials in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security were improperly appointed to the posts under federal law by the Trump administration, a nonpartisan congressional watchdog said Friday. The Government Accountability Office says acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf and acting deputy Ken Cuccinelli are ineligible to run the agency under the Vacancy Reform Act. The GAO says it has asked the DHS inspector general to review their status and decide whether the apparent violation of the Vacancy Reform Act has any effect on actions they took while holding the post. The report does not carry the force of law, though it could be a factor in lawsuits challenging administration policies or influence members of Congress. For its part, DHS rejected the finding.“We wholeheartedly disagree with the GAO’s baseless report and plan to issue a formal response to this shortly,” the agency said in a written response to The Associated Press.Democrats in Congress called on Wolf to resign. 1021

WASHINGTON D.C. (KGTV) -- Did President Trump appoint the man who killed a beloved lion to a wildlife conservation panel? In 2015, Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer killed Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe. The incident sparked outrage over international trophy hunting.President Trump did not name Palmer to a wildlife conservation panel, however, the President did name ten members of the trophy-hunting lobby group “Safari Club International” to the panel. The group has roughly 50,000 members, including Palmer. 512

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Polls are beginning to close in parts of the U.S. and some Election Day results are coming in.The first states to close at least a portion of their polls are Indiana and Kentucky, at 6 p.m. ET. Those races won’t tell us much, because they’re largely Republican strongholds. Some of the first key states to close their polls are Georgia and Florida at 7 p.m. ET. Not all counties in the Sunshine State will close then, but a good chunk will start reporting around that time. Georgia is a swing state this year, so keep your eyes on the suburbs of Atlanta. At 7:30 p.m. ET, North Carolina and Ohio will close their polls. Ohio is expected to report results right away and a projection in the state is possible on election night. As for North Carolina, the state has ordered some polling locations to stay open longer than 7:30, so don’t expect results from there until after 8 p.m. at least. At 8 p.m. ET, polls will close in Texas, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Although, it’s very unlikely, we will know the results from the last two. State laws prohibit early processing of ballots. At 9 p.m. ET, Arizona, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska will close polls. Remember, former Vice President Joe Biden could win an electoral college vote in Nebraska, because the state hands out votes based on individual congressional district results. As far as key counties, keep an eye on Cuyahoga County, where Cleveland is. In 2016, 49,000 fewer votes were cast for Hillary Clinton than for Barack Obama in 2012. If turnout is high there, Ohio could be competitive tonight. It’s the same story in Wayne County, Michigan, where Detroit is, where there were over 76,000 fewer votes in 2016. If that county breaks voting records, it could be a good night for Democrats. It’s a similar story tonight in Milwaukee County.Again, the key tonight will be patience. Some states will take a while to count votes this election night. Election officials from coast to coast are telling their workers not to worry about being fast, but to worry about being right. The Senate racesAs the first presidential results gradually come in, don’t forget to keep an eye on the U.S. Senate results as well. After all, whoever wins the presidency will need Congress to help pass their agenda. As a reminder, currently there are 53 Republican senators and 47 Democratic senators. There is a total of 35 Senate races this year. Republicans think they can pick a seat up in Alabama, while Democrats think they are in good position to pick up Arizona, Colorado, North Carolina and Maine.Remember, the Senate confirms judges, helps pass bills and confirms cabinet positions. The presidential raceAs for the race for the White House, one state to keep an eye on is Wisconsin, with 10 electoral college votes. It’s a state President Donald Trump and Joe Biden have campaigned heavily in the last few days. Trump won there in 2016. His margins were thin though. In Kenosha County for example, he won by just 255 votes four years agoFour years ago, Trump won by carrying Pennsylvania and the upper Midwest. Democrats are hoping to flip each one of those states.Polls have shown Biden leading the Midwest, at least in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. But can u trust the polls this year? We asked University of Southern California’s Bob Shrum what’s different this year.“The state polls were changed drastically in the sense that most of them didn’t have a filter for education,” said Shrum. “And they had too many college educated whites and not enough non-educated whites.”As far as what’s driving voters, a CNN exit polls shows that 34% consider the economy the top issue, with racial inequality at 21%, followed by the coronavirus at 18%.Biden is watching the results come in from Delaware, while Trump is at the White House.Watch Joe St. George discuss what to be on the lookout for 3862

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At least 59,494 new coronavirus cases were reported in the United States on Wednesday, which is the highest daily count since August 14, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. The data shows there was also an increase in the number of deaths, with at least 985 reported Wednesday, up from 802 the day before. The nation’s total coronavirus cases stand at about 7,917,300 and more than 216,900 deaths from COVID-19, John Hopkins says. Those cases include people in all 50 states, Washington D.C. and U.S. territories. As has been the case throughout the pandemic, the U.S. leads the world in the number of reported COVID-19 cases and deaths, followed by India, Brazil and Russia. The current rise in cases in several areas of the U.S. has many infectious disease experts worried about a large spike in the fall and winter months, a time when the country is using health care resources to battle the flu. To help combat the risk of a "twindemic," doctors are encouraging all Americans to get a flu vaccination.Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the country’s top coronavirus experts, told ABC News on Thursday that the spike is “concerning” and that “you don’t want to be in that compromised position where your baseline daily infection is high and you are increasing as opposed to going in the other direction.”Click here to learn more from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about how you can help protect yourself and others from contracting the coronavirus. 1502
