MOBILE, Ala. — Former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville has defeated Jeff Sessions to win the Republican Senate primary in Alabama. The 65-year-old Tuberville is now positioned to put up a strong challenge against Democratic Sen. Doug Jones. President Donald Trump endorsed Tuberville.Sessions had held the Senate seat for 20 years until he resigned to serve as Trump’s attorney general. But he was politically wounded by Trump’s criticism after he recused himself in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign. The president continued his criticism of Sessions right up to the eve of Tuesday’s election, saying he “made a mistake” when he appointed Sessions attorney general. 733

Nashville will be home to Amazon’s new executive operations center -- bringing 5,000 jobs to the area and making it the largest jobs announcement in Tennessee's history.  Amazon made the announcement Tuesday morning, saying the location would be its new Operations Center of Excellence and be the company's headquarters for its logistics group. Amazon has chosen New York City and Northern Virginia to split duty as its second headquarters.  Nashville will serve as the company’s Retail Operations division, which will be located in downtown just north of The Gulch in the Nashville Yards development -- a billion dollar project between Church Street and West End. The one million square foot office space will house the tech and management functions of the Retail Operations division, including customer fulfillment, customer service, transportation, and supply chain, amongst others.“Amazon has spent the past year searching the nation for the best possible locations to expand and it chose Tennessee because of our business-friendly policies, low taxes and skilled workforce," Governor Bill Haslam said in a statement. The company is making an estimated 3 million capital investment over seven years and creating 5,000 net new full-time jobs with an average pay of .32 an hour, which is more than 0,000 a year.Currently, Amazon employs approximately 2,500 people in the Nashville region across five fulfillment and sortation centers. This operations center is projected to create more than 13,000 jobs for Tennessee’s workforce.     1642

NASHVILLE, Ind. — Officials with Brown County Schools are investigating an apparent racial incident where a Black student was referred to in a photo caption as "Black Guy" and not by his name.Apparent photos of the yearbook purporting to show the error that has been posted to social media indicate it was a photo of one of the school's basketball teams.Superintendent Dr. Laura Hammack and high school Principal Matthew Stark issued a letter dated Monday that called the incident "a truly reprehensible error.""We acknowledge that yearbook is the only class at this school where all assignments and homework are published for all to see," the statement reads. "We strive for perfection and hope any errors are minor and inconsequential. This is not an inconsequential error."The district has an ongoing investigation and consequences will be determined when the investigation is completed, according to the superintendent and principal's statement."Our district has been working to advance equity and inclusion for all protected classes; however, an occasion like this evidences the need for expanded response," the statement reads. "We are committed to ensuring that Brown County Schools provide a welcoming, safe, inclusive, and equitable school community. We remain relentless in our pursuit of the same."The letter said the district "is working collaboratively with the student's family to find ways to rectify the situation."The district also said in the letter that the error is a "clear violation of our nondiscrimination policy."Hammack also addressed the situation in a Facebook Live video on the Brown County Schools - Superintendent page. This story was first reported by Bob Blake at WRTV in Indianapolis, Indiana. 1738

Moderna is asking American regulators to allow emergency use of its COVID-19 vaccine. It says its final results show the vaccine is 94% effective. The drug maker says it had 196 COVID-19 cases so far in its study. It says 185 of those participants received the placebo, while 11 got the real vaccine. The 30 people who became seriously ill in the trial didn't get the vaccine.FDA advisors are expected to look at all the evidence on December 17. They'll be checking out Pfizer’s vaccine on December 10.Pfizer and Moderna's success with their COVID-19 trials could impact how vaccines are made in the future. It has to do with how they work. They use what's called messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. The virus' genetic code is injected into the body so it can instruct cells on what antibodies to produce. It hasn't been approved to be used in a commercial vaccine before.“In the future, it's clearly going to be tough to beat RNA vaccines for speed and that's a wonderful thing. Just this demonstration of how incredibly fast they can move has been great. How effective they can be, I think will depend on a particular disease,” said Shane Crotty, Ph.D. with the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.Crotty says the narrowest application for this vaccine technology in the future is a similar situation where there's a new emerging virus."The mRNA vaccine has been tried for other infectious diseases and they have been investigated for cancer. There's a whole area of trying to vaccine against cancer, which has kind of been an elusive target,” said Dr. Alessandro Sette with the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.A big question with an mRNA vaccine is how long its protection will last. While there is encouraging findings, there's no historical comparison to look at.A big thing experts say has helped with a vaccine is there has been a lot of money put towards manufacturing before we even knew it would work.Click here to learn more about mRNA vaccines. 1958
