DENVER, Colorado — If you are planning on hiking in a national park or head to the airport to travel this weekend be prepared. Federal workers are warning that the government shutdown is starting to impact safety."For air traffic controllers, you only get one take,” said James Marinitti with the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. “They work in a mistake-free environment where we are expected to be right 100 percent of the time.”With 3,000 air traffic support staff being told not to come to work there are fewer safety inspectors. That can lead to delays like repairing runway lights that guide pilots to the installation of new technology that helps controllers communicate with pilots."Radar, preventative maintenance -- these types of things that will get delayed as the shutdown continues because the workers are not there to keep the system healthy," Marinitti said.TSA employees are among the thousands of essential government workers required to show up without pay. Senior officials have confirmed with CNN that hundreds of TSA employees are calling out sick since the shutdown. We reached out to the TSA at Denver International Airport about the impacts but have not heard back.At Rocky Mountain National Park, visitors are arriving only to be disappointed.“We are out here to visit. We see the sign and realize it's closed. We came all the way from Vancouver, Canada, and it's kinda disappointing,” said Stanley Marayan.Trash cans are locked up at the park and roads are closed because there are no workers to plow them. The National Park Service is warning visitors to use extreme caution during the shutdown because emergency services are limited. At Yosemite National Park, one death wasn’t reported for a week because of the government shutdown."America is great. We want to explore America, so for us, I think this is crazy they are closing the parks. Nature is beautiful here," Marayan said. 1964

Chris Watts' 4-year-old daughter knew her mother and younger sister, Celeste, had just been killed -- and she feared she would be next."Please Daddy, don't do to me what you just did to Cece," said Bella, according to a lawyer for the family of Shannan Watts, the girls' mother.Earlier, Bella had walked into the room just after Watts had strangled his wife, Shannan, and was wrapping her in a sheet to dispose of her body. "What are you doing with Mommy?" Bella asked her father.Bella's last words and other details about the disturbing familial murders were revealed by attorney Steven Lambert on Tuesday's "Dr. Phil" show.Lambert's summary of the events provides a chilling picture of how Chris Watts killed his pregnant wife, Shanann, 34, and their two children, Bella and Celeste, 3, and then disposed of their bodies at a secluded oil field where he worked. DENVER, Colo. – Experts across the country are working to make schools safer, especially when it comes to mass shootings. One aspect they’re focusing on is mental health. In the past 10 years, there have been 180 school shootings, according to studies done by CNN and information from the Department of Education.“In Colorado, we are the state that has had more school shooting than any state, so we take it very seriously,” said Ellen Kelty, the Denver Public Schools director of student equity and opportunity.According to Kelty, school shootings have been something districts and lawmakers deal with far too often since Columbine. While districts figure out how to make schools safe when it comes to security, some psychologists and lawmakers in Colorado believe it starts with addressing mental health.“The FBI has determined that most students who have done school shootings are suicidal.” Kelty said. “It is very related. I’ve done a lot of work outside of DPS about this topic and we do believe that if we had stronger mental health, we would have less school shootings.”According to the CDC, youth suicide increased by 56 percent in a decade. Psychologists believe addressing mental health and suicide in schools can help prevent school shootings.“We have 18 school-based centers that provide comprehensive health and mental health services,” Kelty said.DPS has increased the number of psychologists and social workers by 96 percent in the last five years.“We have a suicide risk assessment process that they go through if they think they’re in danger to suicide,” Kelty said. “We also have a threat assessment process they go through.” Last year, DPS did more than 2,700 suicide assessments.Lawmakers like Rep. Dafna Michaelson Jenet have dedicated their service to youth mental health. Jenet helped pass a law that students 12 years old or older can ask for mental health help without parental consent.“This approach is directly stopping school shootings,” Jenet said. “Our kids know what they’re going to do. They know if they’re going to commit suicide when they’re 16 years old and shoot up the school and take their friends with them and it ends in suicide. I believe every school shooting is a suicide mission. But if we’re able to identify a youth with suicide ideation well before they’re ready to commit suicide, we can keep our schools safer.”For victims of school shootings, this topic is complicated.“Kendrick sacrificed his life to help save his fellow students with a couple of other boys who helped him,” said John Castillo, the father of Kendrick Castillo who lost his life in the shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado last year. Castillo has dedicated his life to combating school shootings. While he said there are many factors to make schools safer, mental health is one of the important ones.“The way I see it is there are two things that happen in school safety,” Castillo said. “One of them is early detection and prevention, and that’s where mental health comes in. Our teen suicide rate is off the charts, and those are all things that we need to consider and look at.”Experts agree that mental health is one of the most powerful tools to not only help identify potential school shooters, but also to help prevent school violence. 3287
