Democrats concluded the second day of opening arguments in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump on Thursday.Thursday marked the second of three eight-hour sessions in which House impeachment managers will explain why they feel President Donald Trump should be removed from office. On Wednesday, lead impeachment manager Adam Schiff walked Senators step-by-step through Trump's dealings with Ukraine, in which Trump withheld foreign aid for weeks in the hopes that it would encourage new Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to open an investigation into one of his political rivals."(The president) does not, under our laws and under our constitution, have a right to use the powers of his office to corruptly solicit foreign aid, prohibited foreign aid, to help his re-election," Schiff said during his remarks Thursday.Watch Thursday's session below:Democrats claim Trump abused the power of his office by withholding military aid to Ukraine — a U.S. ally and a key part of the U.S.'s defense against Russia — in exchange for opening an investigation that would be politically advantageous to Trump.Trump pushed Zelensky to announce that publicly that Ukraine was opening an investigation into Hunter Biden — the son of Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden — and his role as a board member for the Ukrainian energy company, Burisma. While he was vice president, Joe Biden pushed for the firing of Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin, who was investigating Burisma. Obama administration officials maintain Shokin's firing was consistent with the U.S.'s strategy of rooting out corruption in Ukraine. During part of his remarks on Wednesday, Schiff pushed for Republicans to approve witnesses following opening arguments by both sides. "You should want the whole truth to come out. You should want to know about every player in this sordid business. It is within your power to do so," Schiff said. When setting rules for the impeachment trial, Republicans declined to include scheduled time for witnesses. Following opening arguments, senators most vote to approve additional witnesses with a majority vote. The Republican caucus currently holds a 53-47 advantage over the Democrat caucus, meaning four Republican senators would need to break party lines to approve witnesses. The Democrats' opening arguments will continue Friday when the trial resumes at 1 p.m. ET.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. CHICAGO — Actor Jussie Smollett made his first court appearance Monday on a new set of charges accusing him of lying to Chicago police about being the victim of a racist and homophobic attack last year. The former “Empire” actor is expected to plead not guilty to the six felony counts of disorderly conduct during Monday's hearing. Smollett was initially charged shortly after he said he was attacked in downtown Chicago, but the county prosecutor's office dropped the charges weeks later, angering police and city officials. A special prosecutor tasked with looking into the decision to drop the charges recently announced that Smollett had been indicted for a second time. 688

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of thousands of people around world. It has sent financial markets into a downward spiral and now, the backbone of the American economy, roughly 30 million small businesses, is in jeopardy.“Most small businesses really don’t have much in the way of cashflow,” said Todd McCracken. “They are in the position to last for days maybe weeks, for the most part, if they don’t have money coming in the door.”McCracken is with the National Small Business Association. Many of NSBA’s 65,000 members have had to shutter their doors temporarily in the name of public health, but the longer these businesses remain closed, the more concern there is over whether some will ever reopen.“Small businesses are half our economy,” McCraken added. “Most new jobs are provided by smaller companies and about half of all non-governmental employment is provided by smaller businesses.”So, what exactly do small businesses in America need right now to survive this pandemic, the financial side at least?“They need liquidity, they need cash. That’s the bottom line,” said McCracken. Some small businesses are getting cash from bigger companies, like Facebook. Last week, the social media giant pledged 0 million in grants for 30,000 small businesses struggling right now.In addition, the U.S. small business administration has begun offering up to million in low-interest disaster relief loans to small businesses effect by COVID-19. The loans are 2.75 to 3.75 percent.Meanwhile, a growing number of states, like Florida, are offering no-interest loans. Typically though, they max out at ,000 per small business.Importantly to note, whether a business is applying for private sector grants or government loans, they should expect the process for both to take a few weeks. A few weeks could just be too long for many of the small business feeling the financial impact of this pandemic, and that is why organizations like the NSBA are closely watching the second stimulus package being proposed in congress. The latest version of the package would offer 0 billion in small business loans that are expected to be issued in a faster timeframe and with more substantial benefits. The catch is small businesses who get this money have to commit to not to laying off their current employees.“This is a really good package for small companies,” said McCracken. “It would allow them to get a loan, we hope very quickly to support their operations but importantly the amount they spent on staffing and their rent payments can be completely forgiven.”What is loaned but not used for rent and staffing would have to be paid back, but the business has a year to do so. “There are still going to be hiccups I am sure, because we’ve never tried anything like this before,” said McCracken, “because this is literally going to be millions of small businesses applying for these loans in a very tight window.”McCracken, most financial analysts and even economist believe if small businesses can stay afloat, then the economy and average Americans should be able to bounce back faster post-COVID-19. 3110

DENVER – Deputy U.S. Marshals say evidence shows an alleged child rapist faked his own death in Alabama and is now hiding out in Denver where his mother, brother and sister live.Jackson County Prosecutors in Pascagoula, Miss. charged Jacob Blair Scott, 42, with 14 sex charges alleging he raped a young girl. He disappeared on July 30, 2018, from Orange Beach, Ala. days before he was set to plead guilty in the case. Orange Beach is about 90 minutes from Pascagoula.Law enforcement found a dinghy floating in the ocean, a gun tied to the boat and what they describe as a suicide note listing contact information for Scott’s family.Deputy U.S. Marshal Katrina Crouse said investigators found the situation odd from the beginning. Only a very small amount of blood was found on the dinghy."Normally in situations where somebody is shot, committed suicide, you're going to have other forensic-type evidence. For example, brain matter, hair, skin, bone,” she said. “None of that was found."Investigators also found it odd that the gun was tied to the boat.“Almost like they wanted to make sure that the gun was discovered,” she said.No body was found and Crouse said it’s unusual, even in the ocean off shore, for a body to not be found. “Normally bodies will float to the surface,” Crouse said.Scott disappeared just days before he was set to plead guilty in court, she said.Scott’s mother, who lives in the Denver area, denied her son was alive when she was reached on the phone by Contact7 Investigates. She blamed the 14-year-old girl, saying the girl seduced her son. After Scott disappeared, a judge in Jackson County, Miss. issued an arrest warrant for Scott. He had been out on bond while his case moved through the legal system. He is now considered a fugitive.More questionsAs investigators looked into Scott’s disappearance, they discovered he withdrew about ,000 from his retirement account before vanishing. That strikes Deputy U.S. Marshal Crouse as odd.“If you take money out of an account, we know where that money goes. You either give it to relatives or you distribute it to friends,” she said. “No money has been located.”Sightings after the disappearanceA person who claimed to be a friend of Scott’s called the lead investigator in Jackson County, Miss. to say Scott had been spotted driving a vehicle in the county on Aug. 6, 2018.Investigators could not locate him. Then a tip came to the Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers on Dec. 26, 2018.“The tipster stated that someone matching the description of Jacob Blair Scott was seen frequenting the Golden Spike Apartments,” Crouse said. The Golden Spike Apartments are located at West Yale Avenue and South Federal Boulevard in Denver.“The tipster stated the suspect was seen going up to the 8th floor and on the first floor,” she said.Deputy U.S. Marshals visited apartment management, who said they didn’t recognize Scott’s photo, but a worker at the apartments said he’d seen Scott smoking nearby. That’s the same story Mano Quintana told Contact7 Investigative Reporter Jace Larson at the apartment complex Wednesday.“He was in front of garbage cans smoking,” Quintana said.As he looked at Scott’s photo, he said he didn’t doubt he’d seen Scott on the property before.“Pretty darn sure. I’m really 100-percent positive it was him,” Quintana said.Reward for informationU.S. Marshals are hoping someone recognizes Scott and calls with information. 3424
