SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pedestrian was fatally stuck on the Mission Valley (8) Freeway in San Diego, according to the California Highway Patrol.The crash occurred on the westbound 8 Freeway near Hotel Circle about 8:15 p.m., the CHP reported.The body was found near the center divider. There was no immediate word on the age or gender of the victim. The person's name will be withheld pending notification of next of kin.The vehicle that struck the pedestrian remained at the scene, the CHP said.The crash was blocking two lanes and the CHP issued a SigAlert at 8:35 p.m. 575

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A newly formed steering committee is working to drastically reduce the number of hepatitis C cases in San Diego County, it was announced Monday. The county's Health and Human Services Agency and the American Liver Foundation-Pacific Coast Division oversee the Eliminate Hepatitis C San Diego County Initiative steering committee, which also includes members of the public and private medical communities. The aim is to reduce new hepatitis C infections in the county by 80 percent and deaths by 65 percent by 2030. ``By joining forces and strengthening our local efforts, we expect to eliminate this curable disease as a public health threat and improve longevity and quality of life for people living with hepatitis C,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that roughly 3 1/2 million people in the U.S. have hepatitis C. The county reported 3,112 new hepatitis C cases in 2017. Most complications from the infection develop over the course of two to three decades, but acute hepatitis C infections can develop within six months after exposure. ``Most people with hepatitis C might not be aware of their infection because they do not feel ill,'' said ALF-Pacific Coast Division Executive Director Scott Suckow. Hepatitis C is generally transmitted through exposure to blood, especially among people who inject drugs and share needles. The infection can also be spread via sexual transmission, but it isn't as common as blood exposure. CDC officials recommend that people born between 1945 and 1965, current and former injection drug users, people with known exposures to hepatitis C and recipients of blood transfusions and solid organ transplants prior to July 1992 get tested for the infection. The steering committee, which met for the first time last week, plans to present its plan to reduce hepatitis C contractions and deaths to the Board of Supervisors by the end of next year. County health officials have already suggested that the expansion of testing and treatment access should be a priority for the county going forward. ``There is no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C, but there's a cure, so we'll be working with our public and private partners to try to put an end to the virus in San Diego County,'' Wooten said. 2333

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Father Joe's Villages and Connections Housing Downtown will accommodate nearly 300 additional homeless residents on Christmas Eve due to forecasted overnight rain, the San Diego Housing Commission announced Monday. The commission activates the Inclement Weather Shelter Program when temperatures drop below 50 degrees, the chance of rain is higher than 40 percent or in the case of sustained high winds. The program is a partnership between the commission, the city of San Diego, Father Joe's and Connections Housing. The commission also funds the program. Father Joe's can shelter an additional 250 residents throughout the night while Connections Housing can add up to 30 residents. Check-in at Father Joe's begins at 4 p.m. and residents are expected to check out by 5 a.m. the next morning. Check-in at Connections Housing runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and residents are expected to check out by 7 a.m. the next morning. Those at both shelters will have meals provided to them. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - No charges were filed Wednesday against a 19-year-old man arrested along with three teenage girls for allegedly attacking and severely beating a 56-year-old man near Petco Park.The investigation is continuing into the case against 19-year-old Dominick Wells in connection with the attack that left Edward Leon Starland on life support, said Tanya Sierra, a spokeswoman for the District Attorney's Office.Three girls, ages 14, 15 and 17, also were arrested on suspicion of felony battery, said San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs. One of the girls had a detention hearing at Juvenile Court Wednesday.Starland was attacked about 2:10 p.m. last Sunday near the pedestrian bridge adjacent to Petco Park, Dobbs said.Police and paramedics found the victim unresponsive.Investigators determined the victim got into an argument with a group of teenagers and was knocked to the ground, then beaten, the lieutenant said.When witnesses started yelling at the attackers to stop, they fled east on Imperial Avenue, he said.Wells was arrested about 3:15 a.m. the next morning.
