SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Lime is warning riders of a problem with their deckles scooters that can cause “sudden excessive braking during use.”The company issued a safety update on Saturday, saying they had recently discovered a bug in the firmware of their scooters.They determined in some circumstances, the brake on the front wheel would be suddenly and automatically applied often after hitting an obstacle while riding downhill at high speeds.“While this issue has affected less than 0.0045% of all Lime rides, some riders have been injured,” wrote Lime in the safety update.That includes Paul Grasso, who says he was riding a Lime scooter on December 18 on Ingraham Street near Vacation Road in Mission Bay.He said he had just gone down the bridge and was making his way up a sidewalk ramp when the scooter’s wheels tightened up, sending him flying face-first into the pavement.“I spent five days in the hospital,” he said with a “broken nose, fractured skull, traumatic brain injury, fractured eye socket, ten stitches in my forehead and stitches on my nose.”10News reached out to Lime about Grasso’s crash but they said they couldn’t comment on rider specific questions.Lime has launched a fleet-wide firmware update to fix the braking bug. It should reach all of their scooters in the next few days, according to the company’s safety update.Until they have confirmed that all of their scooters have been updated, they have issued a list of precautions for riders:Before starting your Lime trip, walk around the scooter and do a visual inspection of the hardware. Is the vehicle body in good condition? If not, don’t use that vehicle; report it to our customer service team and then select another vehicle.Once you start your Lime trip, give the brake a tight squeeze. If the brake does not engage properly and immediately stop the vehicle, dismount, end the trip and notify Lime customer service.Use extra caution in the next few days while we issue the final firmware update -- especially when riding downhill. Always stay in full control of your scooter and don’t go full speed while riding downhill.Comply with any scooter audible or visual warnings to slow or adjust your speed.Ride defensively: wear a helmet and reflective or bright clothing, respect the right of way and be cautious of other cars, trucks and pedestrians, don’t ever ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and always ride in bike lanes when available.Ride smart: follow the rules of the road, keep both hands on the handle bars, don’t use your mobile device while riding and avoid wearing headphones. 2591

Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. UC San Diego engineers are on they’re way to doing just that, with a wearable patch.Like a thermostat, it can be changed to a specific temperature, warming or cooling the body, using far less energy than an air conditioning system. “Cooling is a really important issue faced by society today. If you look at news reports there are extreme weather conditions, for example in India, peak temperature could be over 50 degrees Celsius in July," said Renkun Chen, a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC San Diego.The patch is made up of thermoelectric alloys - materials that use electricity to create a temperature difference and vice versa - sandwiched between stretchy elastomer sheets. The device physically cools or heats the skin to a temperature that the wearer chooses. The patch is powered by a flexible battery pack. It is made of an array of coin cells all connected by spring-shaped copper wires and embedded in a stretchable material. The system also includes a stretchable circuit board.By regulating the temperature around an individual person, rather than a large room, the smart fabric could potentially cut the energy use of buildings and homes by at least 15 percent.The technology could also be used for people who work in extreme environments, like firefighters or miners. Eventually, Chen and his team want to integrate the technology into clothing. They hope to sell it commercially in the next few years, along with developing a mobile app to control the temperature. CAL FIRE Captain Ryan Mitchell died by suicide on November 5, 2017, at the Interstate 8 Pine Valley bridge. Denelle Mitchell did not want to talk about the day it happened, but the emotions she dealt with in the days and months after his death are hard to forget. “One of the first feelings I felt was ashamed or embarrassed at the type of way that he died,” Denelle Mitchell said. “It comes and goes in waves of being mad or sad.”Her husband was dedicated to his job — a job that was his passion.“He loved the acts of fighting fires. He loved the community… the brotherhood and sisterhood that they had,” Denelle said. But there were difficult days. “What comes with that is a lot of hard work, a lot of hours away from your home and your family and your friends.” What wasn’t obvious to many were struggles behind the scenes.RELATED: Veterinarian suicides on the rise: Student loan debt, compassion fatigue among factors in suicide increase“He did talk about his depression quite a bit and I lived it with him. I was there with him when we were going through some really hard times,” Denelle said. “Marriage can be hard, owning a home and renovating a home can be hard, having a kid — that’s a lot of life stresses.”There were also tough times at work. “The fire seasons were getting longer and harder,” she said. “There’s days where as a firefighter wife, they come home and they just are so exhausted — mentally, physically, and emotionally drained." The Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance recorded 98 firefighter and EMT suicides so far this year. Jeff Dill, the founder of FBHA, said the number this year is on track to be higher than 2018. In 2018, there were 108 suicides. In 2017, the number was 120. A study by the Ruderman Family Foundation said depression among firefighters is nearly double the general population. Firefighters and police are at higher risk for depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide, according to the study.Denelle now focuses on raising their son, Aiden. She encourages loved ones to pay attention to those who may be struggling. “Don’t just let it go by the wayside. Don’t take no for an answer… try to research the signs,”Denelle said.Locally and statewide, action has been taken to ensure resources are available for first responders. Recently, the County Board of Supervisors approved the Captain Ryan J. Mitchell First Responder Behavioral Health Program, which will offer confidential mental and behavior health support by connecting first responders with a clinical professional.The governor also signed several bills that focus on improving protections for the state’s firefighters and first responders when it comes to mental health. AB 1116 (the California Firefighter Peer Support and Crisis Referral Services Act) establishes statewide standards for peer support programs. SB 542 (the Trauma Treatment Act) will provide “first responders with workers’ compensation while they recover from their mental health scars,” according to a news release from the governor’s office. “Bringing awareness to the topic makes it easier to talk about,” Denelle said. She said she is grateful that she did not have to go through this process alone. “I wanted to thank all our friends and family for the support, especially the Cal Fire community, Local 2881, and Chief Patrick Walker,” Denelle told Team 10. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s one of San Diego’s most iconic parks, but there’s a push to change its name and possibly everything it stands for.In September, two very different sides clashed at Chicano Park. The clash required police to break it up.The park is the heart of Barrio Logan and its murals are a colorful reminder of its history.Jorge Gonzales says it’s symbolic of the civil rights movement of the 70s. “These murals tell the story of the Civil Rights era. Right? That went far and beyond Barrio Logan and Chicano Park,” said Gonzales.Five people questioned that history in September at what was called the Patriotic Picnic.Police had to protect them from dozens of people who surrounded them in protest. “The murals are revolutionary. They're anti-American,” said activist Roger Ogden.Ogden was at the picnic and says political radicals and militants run Chicano Park. “It shouldn't be called Chicano Park. They could call it Hispanic Park, Latino Park and celebrate all the Hispanics and not just the militants. If you go down there and wave the US Flag, if I go down there I'm probably going to get beat up.”Ogden and several others shared the video from the picnic and their thoughts with the San Diego City Council on Tuesday.“You can celebrate the Hispanic culture but it should be broader and more inclusive. A lot of Hispanics wouldn't want to be called Chicano because it has a militant aspect to it,” said Ogden.Gonzales says the patriotic picnickers need to have a conversation with someone who understands the murals and who can translate the stories behind the paint.“I think there's a lot of miseducation. People have eyes and love for this park,” said Gonzales.That conversation could become another colorful reminder of the park’s history. 1771
