SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s five branches will be shut down “in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.”The decision to close the branches was made under guidance of public health officials. The closure order is effective July 6.Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister said, “Our downtown branch will remain open July 1 and 2, but starting Monday, we will close our public-facing counters as a precautionary measure, based on social distancing recommendations from local officials.”The four other branches -- Kearny Mesa, San Marcos, Chula Vista, and Santee -- have been closed to the public since March and will remain closed.The downtown branch on 1600 Pacific Highway had just reopened on June 15, with modifications in place, after being closed in March.Customers can still complete business via the SDTTC.com website or without even visiting the office at all. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District says it has removed a letter from President Trump inserted into food baskets that, according to the district, downplays the importance of wearing a mask. The district says the letter “significantly diminishes the scientifically-backed importance of wearing a mask to protect against the transmission of COVID-19.”According to the district, the letter was placed into boxes of free groceries set to be distributed to 50 million families across the country.The district says President Trump’s letter recommends that Americans practice social distancing and “consider wearing a face covering in public.”“Science is clear: wearing a mask works to prevent the spread of the coronavirus,” Superintendent Cindy Marten said. “Masks are required in California and on every San Diego Unified school campus. It is not optional, as the President wrote in his letter.”The state currently requires that people wear face coverings when in public spaces, indoors, and areas where physical distancing is not possible. 1066

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego will begin its first over water testing of lighting on the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, as the Port continues efforts to install lighting across a portion of the bridge.The testing will start on Sunday, Nov. 8, and continue to Saturday, Nov. 14, from 6:15 p.m. to midnight.The testing will include 170 computer-programmed LED lights and controllers temporarily installed on three of the bridge's tallest columns near the center of the structure. Each night, a live technical test will be conducted in different colors, combinations, sequencing, and arrangements."This bridge lighting test provides San Diego a unique opportunity to see what’s possible and how the infusion of technology and art can make people feel connected to, and inspired by, our beautiful waterfront," said Commissioner Marshall Merrifield, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. "Our goal is to ignite the imaginations of every person in the San Diego region, and after years of dedicated time to the project, bring forward a viable, beautiful addition to the nighttime skyline."The testing will see periods of darkness as other aspects are being tested, so the lighting won't be constant illuminated.The upcoming testing is the second test of the project. Our scenic coastline, diverse communities, and bevvy of sunshine throughout the year can be thanked for that.But for those trying times, the "Smile, You're in San Diego" mural at 1st Ave. and C St. serves as a reminder. The mural's artists, Pheobe Cornog and Roxy Prima of Pandr Design Co., we tasked with the design by the San Diego Tourism Authority."They originally just wanted a smiley face. Inside each letter of the postcard design is an era of the training station's history, from US Navy facility to public market."SeaWalls: Murals for Oceans," on Fourth Ave., was painted by the Cohort Collective to raise environmental issues. The group installed 18 murals around the county to bring topics of overfishing and ocean reef conservation to onlookers."There's not enough public art, we don't think, in San Diego. We have the best weather and people are outside all the time, so we should have more art on the streets and for people to easily access," Cornog said.A way for our history and future to shine through, wherever you may be in San Diego."We feel art shouldn't just be in galleries, it should be everywhere you look," Prima added. 2715
