BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- China has decided to impose anti-dumping tariffs on pure terephthalic acid imported from Thailand and the Republic of Korea (ROK), the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Thursday.The five-year tariffs, ranging from 2 percent to 20.1 percent, took effect Thursday, the ministry said in a notice posted on its website.The MOC said the dumping of terephthalic acid on the China market had caused substantial damage to the domestic industry.The ministry started an anti-dumping probe into imports of the acid on Feb. 12, 2009.On Feb. 12, 2010, the MOC announced the the preliminary ruling of the investigation, which required importers of pure terephthalic acid from Thailand and the ROK to put down a security deposit.Terephthalic acid is an organic compound used in polyester coatings and resins.

HANGZHOU, July 4 (Xinhua) -- A new regular direct passenger sea route between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan was officially opened Saturday after a ship safely returned from Taiwan.The passenger ship, Coscostar, returned to the Damaiyu Port, Taizhou City of eastern Zhejiang Province Saturday, making it the second port on the mainland that has served the regular direct sea route with Taiwan, said He Jinliang, deputy head of the city's Taiwan affairs office.On June 26, the ship, carrying more than 500 passengers, traveled about 302 km to the Keelung Port of Taiwan, He said.With a tonnage of 26,800, the ship, owned by the China Ocean Shipping Companies Group, could carry about 600 passengers, 256 containers and 150 automobiles.The COSCO Star Passenger Ro-Ro Ship is berthed inside the Dabaiyu Port, prior to its maiden voyage to Keelung of Taiwan, at Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, June 26, 2010.The ship is scheduled to shuttle once a week. It will depart from Damaiyu in Yuhuan County on Saturday night and return the following Friday. The single trip would take eight to nine hours, traveling at various speed.Wang Yihao, deputy head of Yuhuan County, said the standard ticket costs 600 yuan (88.6 U.S.dollars) and the deluxe class ticket costs 1,000 yuan."The prices are nearly half that of airline tickets. With this new route, cross-Strait travel will be much easier, more comfortable and will attract more mainland tourists to Taiwan," Wang said.In August 2009, the first regular direct sea route was launched to link eastern Fujian Province's Xiamen Port and Taiwan's Taichung Port and Keelung Port.

BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Saturday cautioned against more rain-triggered disasters such as flood and mudslide during the rain season, and demanded for strengthened preventive measures.Currently most parts of the nation is experiencing the flood season when geological disasters becomes rampant, especially in the mountainous areas in the western region, Hui told a national meeting on geological disaster prevention on Saturday.He said authorities should keep a clear mind on the grim situations and step up efforts to prevent and fight the disaster with scientific methods.Massive mudslides hit northwestern China's Zhouqu County in Gansu Province on Aug. 8, with death toll rising to 1,239 as of 4 p.m. Saturday, and 505 are still missing.On early Saturday, at least 38 people were missing after rain-triggered floods and landslides ravaged Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province, the epicenter of an 8.0 magnitude earthquake which left about 87,000 people dead or missing more than two years ago.Hui has called for all-out rescue efforts in Wenchuan County's mudslide. He asked local authorities to promptly evacuate residents, and speedily restore transport and telecommunication facilities in the area.The Vice Premier asked the local water, meteorological, and land authorities to closely monitor the situation and issue prompt forecasts and warnings on the floods and rain.Monitoring geological risks should be immediately launched in the towns, villages, and areas along roads and railway tracks, Hui said.Dangerous zones should be marked and people should be prevented from entering such risky areas.Hui said more work was needed to be done to ensure residents have food to eat and water to drink. Shelters and medical access should also be priorities for those affected.Further, the Vice Premier asked local officials to intensify hygiene work in order to prevent epidemics.

BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam agreed Thursday to properly deal with the maritime territorial issues in the South China Sea.This is one of the five consensus decisions made at the fourth meeting of the China-Vietnam steering committee on cooperation, which was co-chaired by Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.China and Vietnam signed a package of agreements on the demarcation of their 1,300-kilometer land boundary last November. BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Urban fixed assets investment in China for the first five months rose 25.9 percent year on year to 6.74 trillion yuan (986.76 billion U.S. dollars), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Friday.The growth rate was 0.2 percentage points down from that for the first four months, according to figures released by the NBS.In the first five months, central government project investment was 540 billion yuan, up 14.1 percent year on year; investment by local governments soared 27 percent to 6.2 trillion yuan.Investment in railways construction and transportation climbed 20.4 percent to 161.1 billion yuan during the same period.The government is reportedly planning to spend 700 billion yuan on high-speed railway construction this year.Total investment in the primary sector (including farming, fishing and forestry) expanded 16.1 percent from a year earlier.The industrial sector saw investment up 22.4 percent and investment in the tertiary sector, which covers commerce, finance and services, was up 28.8 percent.Property market investment grew 38.2 percent to 1.39 trillion yuan in the first five months, 2 percentage points higher than the figure for the first four months, according to NBS data.
