SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Libraries across San Diego County adapted quickly during the coronavirus pandemic, offering digital options for people to continue reading, researching, and connecting with the community."It's hugely important," says Migell Acosta, the San Diego County Library System Director. "People need libraries for serious study and recreational reading and then their information needs.""We knew that our main services were going to be reference, picking up library material and connecting to our technology," adds Ady Huertas, the Supervising Librarian of Youth and Family Services for the City of San Diego. "Luckily, during this time, we've been able to maintain that service, and we're really happy that we're able to do that."Moving to digital services when the pandemic forced branches to close took some adjustments but ultimately proved successful.Libraries moved money in their budgets from buying physical books to buying ebooks so people could have more options to download. The County library system went from 2 million ebook downloads in 2019 to 3 million in 2020 and amassed the state's 2nd most extensive digital library.The City Library created a virtual hub on Facebook to connect with people through storytime, videos, and more. It quickly grew to more than 2,000 followers."We went from creating some basic programming daily to having multiple programs per day for all ages," says Huertas. "We have a schedule. We have storytimes, book clubs, book talks, crafts, stem, learning opportunities, and we even have mindfulness programs and other folks we collaborate to create the content."Both systems also gave out nearly 30,000 take-home summer reading kits to keep kids excited about literacy.The County sent magazines and paperback books to members of the homeless population living in shelters and hotels.Libraries also expanded their online learning options. The County's high school diploma program for people aged 19 and up graduated 25 people during the pandemic and currently has 100 more enrolled.They also offered access to Linda.com, an online learning library of "how-to" videos."I love YouTube like everybody else," says Acosta. "But these are classes that are more business skills, how to do a presentation, accounting skills, and then deep level computer skills."They've had several thousand hours' worths of videos already viewed on the service since they added the service.In the spring, libraries were able to add in-person pick up of books. Over the summer, they offered limited access for people to come into the branches.They also made it easier for people to become library customers by offering library cards with only a phone number or email address.To help address the equity gap, libraries also allowed people to check out computers and other devices. They also expanded wifi signals at the branches to have internet access for people sitting outside the library.Library officials say the new emphasis on digital has made them better libraries in the long run."Whenever there's a challenge to be met, and you step up to the challenge, personally or as an institution, you become better for from that experience," says Huertas. 3187

It’s unethical,” he tells us during a disguised sit-down interview. 10News is not publishing his name, face or voice. He fears losing his badge for breaking his silence.“It’s a reward system. A bounty system for officers seeking rewards for their arrests,” he tells us.10News was provided a copy of an internal email that was sent last week from a sergeant to more than 90 officers. It states that the program is being instituted in the Southern Division and is strictly voluntary. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s been a historic wildfire season in California, made even more complicated by the pandemic.Emergency officials in San Diego County continue to shore up evacuation plans and brace for the worst, as more than a dozen wildfires in Northern California reveal the challenges of responding to two crises at once.As tens of thousands of Californians fled the wildfires last month, some turned to a shelter at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. But with new rules in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the shelter quickly filled up.The Civic Auditorium reached capacity August 21 and had to turn some evacuees away. The shelter remains at capacity, according to Cal Fire.About 27,000 people remained under evacuation orders as of Tuesday, according to Cal Fire. The Red Cross and partner organizations were sheltering more than 4,500 Californians in various settings as of Monday night.The Red Cross has put some displaced residents in hotels, a strategy that emergency workers in San Diego County are planning to emulate.“The county, since the beginning of the pandemic, has been working really proactively to identify and contract with hotels and motels to meet the unique housing and lodging needs of our community members,” said Senior Emergency Services Coordinator Julie Jeakle.With help from the Red Cross, the county has amassed a list of nearly 100 hotels and motels in San Diego County that could be called upon as emergency shelters. Some of these hotels were previously tapped as quarantine sites for individuals exposed to COVID-19.Traditional shelters in gyms or at schools won’t go away, but they’ll look different. Red Cross volunteers will conduct temperature checks and health screenings. The county had to urge tourists to leave so evacuees could get access to rooms.San Diego County has turned to the Mission Valley stadium site for mass evacuations, including during the 2007 Witch Fire. But that site is currently under construction, and emergency responders would need permission from the stadium’s new owner, San Diego State.Another option: the Del Mar Fairgrounds.The fairgrounds was used as a large animal shelter four times in recent history: 2003, 2007, 2014 and 2017. But in 2007 it also hosted people, and Jeakle said the county had been in recent talks with the venue.Determining which site -- or sites -- will serve as an evacuation shelter will be based on several factors, including the size and severity of the emergency, Jeakle said.“We’re certainly here to serve if and when we’re needed,” said Del Mar Fairgrounds marketing director Jennifer Hellman.Hellman said the fairgrounds would have procedures in place requiring mask-wearing, social distancing and increased cleaning, and there would be hand sanitizer stations deployed throughout the site. 3325

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just after President Donald Trump addressed the nation about border security, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Barrio Logan held an event to recruit volunteers to help at asylum shelters. “The primary purpose was to let people know from a more personal perspective what’s taking place with the caravan,” said Father John Auther, pastor at Our Lady. The volunteers work with the San Diego Rapid Response Network to help the migrants who make it across the border.Several people who had volunteered in the past got up to speak about their experiences. “If I thought I was humble, it’s made me more humble. It’s rewarding,” said Martha Carriedo. She has volunteered for months at the shelter which is housed in an undisclosed location in San Diego. It serves as a temporary refuge for asylum seekers who have made it through the border legally but need help finding a way to meet with friends or family. Or if they don’t have any connections in the U.S., to find a sponsor or longer-term housing option while they wait for their asylum case to be heard.
