CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - A Coronado native is among the 12 people killed in the Thousand Oaks country bar shooting, according to California Lutheran University.Justin Meek, 23, was working as a bouncer at Borderline Bar and Grill when Ian David Long walked in and opened fire. Meek's sister, who was at the bar and survived, reported that Meek broke out windows to help survivors escape.Meek initially survived the shooting and was reported in critical condition before the university confirmed his death Thursday morning.RELATED: At least 13 dead in Thousand Oaks bar shootingFriends and family gathered for a vigil at Coronado’s Spreckels Park.“Justin is a great kid. Really sweet and full of life…big in music and a big part of the community,” a friend told 10News.According to the WayUp website, Meek was a recent graduate of California Lutheran University, an Eagle Scout, and a former City of Coronado and Coronado High School lifeguard. He also performed as Coronado High’s “Mr. Tiki” mascot before graduating in 2014."Our community is devastated to have lost one of our own to a senseless act of violence. We are here to support the Meek family and our community," said Coronado High School principal Shane Schmeichel.THOUSAND OAKS MASS SHOOTING: 1273

Color no one surprised: These days, even a new crayon name draws criticism.Crayola announced the name of a new blue crayon this week: "Bluetiful," which beat out four other names with 40% of the vote in an online naming contest launched in July. But critics say the name will teach children a nonword. It prompted a hue and cry (pun intended) on Twitter."Of thousands Eng & foreign words for new blue hue, @Crayola mangles real word, fails at teaching kids color name AND spelling," wrote one user."Kids are gonna be so confused with color names now," wrote another."The dumbing down of US continues as Crayola replaces 'Dandelion' w/'Bluetiful'. 90k submissions; picked 1 that's not a color, object or word," another Twitter user wrote. The Easton, Pennsylania-based company announced in March that its yellowish Dandelion crayon would be retired after 27 years, to be replaced with a new bright blue one in its 24-count box. Bluetiful is Crayola's 19th blue color and will be available "soon," the company said. The contest offered five possible names: Along with Bluetiful, voters could pick from Blue Moon Bliss, Dreams Come Blue, Reach for the Stars and Star Spangled Blue.Plenty of fans praised the new name, and others defended it."In Kindergarten we teach nonsense words because they are important for learning to read," Catherine Baublitz, a kindergarten teacher in Atlanta, told CNN. "Nonsense words are parts of whole words. (They) help with learning syllables and help to build confidence in decoding.""I like it @Crayola Get kids to discuss language use in creating brand & products. It's not about spelling. It's about #Creativity," wrote one.Another called it his "new favourite portmanteau word," and others declared it simply "beautiful."The-CNN-Wire 1779

Comet NEOWISE may be on its way out, but that doesn't mean that the night sky's light show is set to end.According to the American Meteor Society, two meteor showers are set to peak in the coming days, which could result in several fireballs that light up the sky.One of those showers is the Southern Delta-Aquariids, which, according to NASA, are typically visible between July 12 and Aug. 23. But the agency reports that the system will peak in activity early Monday morning. At its viewing peak — in the southern hemisphere on a clear dark night — the Southern Delta-Aquariids can produce up to 25 meteors an hour, NASA says. Unfortunately, Americans won't be able to see that many fireballs, but experts still say some may still be visible — especially for those with minimal light pollution and clear skies.NASA says the Southern Delta-Aquariids will be most visible between moonset and first dawn on early Monday morning. The American Meteor Society also reports that the Alpha Capricornids will also peak early next week. While the AMS notes that the shower isn't particularly strong (about five meteors an hour), the meteors it does produce are particularly bright and visible. The AMS says the Alpha Capricornids will peak Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.According to the Associated Press, Comet NEOWISE will be visible in the night sky through mid-August before it heads back out toward the outer solar system. 1430

CLEVELAND — A Cleveland school security guard who was charged with rape, accused of soliciting and sexually assaulting multiple students, was reported for inappropriate behavior to Cleveland Metropolitan School District months before he was arrested. Derrick Dugger, 29, a security guard at East Technical High School in Cleveland is due back in court Tuesday morning for the charges. According to court records, investigators said he forced a 15-year-old girl to perform oral sex and sent inappropriate messages to students. A detective wrote in the report that Dugger was “predatory” and “a danger to these young ladies.”Dugger was formally charged with rape last week after an investigation began earlier in November, but one Cleveland family told Scripps affiliate WEWS-TV that they reported him months before.According to Joyce Swann, her 15-year-old daughter who has special needs made a complaint about Dugger soon after the school year began at East Technical High School.A CMSD report of that complaint obtained by WEWS is dated September 7 — more than 2 months before Dugger was charged. In the report, Swann’s daughter told the dean that at first, the guard asked her if she had a boyfriend and asked to check her phone. The next day, he greeted her by saying, “Good morning baby.”After that, the student reported, the guard told her he “liked the way she twerked that a**” on Instagram. The student said she felt uncomfortable and reported it to the dean, who called her mother and told her they would take a report and investigate. But Swann said she never heard an update until the day Dugger was charged.“Who would say that to a little kid? You’re supposed to be making sure these kids are safe and you’re preying on them,” Swann said. She said she is terrified of what could have happened had her daughter not reported it — and angry that the school didn’t do more initially.“My daughter is a special needs child. He never would have thought in a million years that she would go to authorities and make that report,” Swann said. “I don’t know if they just wouldn’t believe her because she’s an autistic girl or whatever, and he’s an authority figure.”Swann said she wishes she would have pursued the school more with updates on the investigation and encourages other parents to listen to their kids and take action.CMSD sent WEWS the following statement: 2399

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — Saturday, a Coronado resident happened upon a pet carrier a cat and kittens abandoned on a sidewalk. The carrier was left near the corner of Ocean Blvd. and Marina Ave., just blocks from Coronado Beach and a dog park, according to Wayne Strickland, who found the animals."Somebody just abandoned them," Strickland said, adding he and his wife found a cat and five kittens inside the carrier. "They thought, 'well there's a place here nobody's going to see and we'll just drop them off and be gone.' It's just wrong."RELATED:140 rats once living in van in Del Mar now up for adoption10News Pet of the WeekEscondido City Council to decide fate of pet alpacasStrickland said he called Coronado Police and waited for an officer to arrive and recover the cats. The animals were taken to PAWS animal rescue. This may not be the first time pets have been abandoned on Coronado's sidewalks. Strickland added that a Facebook user claimed they too found cats abandoned on Alameda Blvd. two months ago."I don't know what the deal is, if people think they can just come over here and Coronado is a good place where they can just abandon their unwanted litter of pets," Strickland said. "But the right thing to do is take them to PAWS or the Humane Society."Just don't leave them out in the sun, in a little box ... it was a terrible thing to see."The San Diego Humane Society says anyone is welcome to make an appointment to surrender an animal or litter. PAWS also welcomes pet owners to relinquish animals if they can no longer care for them. 1564
