(KGTV) - A Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team [FCMAT] is in place to review financial decisions in the Sweetwater Union High School District amid a severe budget shortfall. Michael Fine of FCMAT said Tuesday his team is investigating the district’s spending. The team is currently reviewing documents and will be in the county later this month to interview personnel within the district, Fine said.The Sweetwater Union High School District is about million in debt for the 2018-2019 school year due to fiscal mismanagement. District officials previously said the shortage was due to expenses from staff raises, including costs of substitute teachers and an unexpected million expense for utilities. (CNS) -- Search warrants served at five illegal marijuana dispensaries in Chula Vista, Lakeside and Spring Valley resulted in the arrests of six people on a variety of charges and the seizure of .1 million and 3,000 pounds of marijuana and other drugs.Deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department served the warrants at the dispensaries, as well as at homes in Jamul and San Diego and at a storage facility in Spring Valley, according to Sgt. Zheath Sanchez.The warrants followed "numerous community complaints related to unlicensed and illegal dispensaries, some located in residential neighborhoods and near local schools," Sanchez said.Taken into custody were:-- Samir Shoshani, 34, of Jamul and Iisin Mikha, 28, of Michigan, for conspiracy and operating or maintaining a drug house-- Brandon Ceja, 23, of San Diego, for being a felon in possession of a firearm-- Ariel Brown, 23, of Chula Vista, for possession of metal knuckles and possession of marijuana for sale-- Faith Ford, 22, of San Diego for possession of marijuana for saleIn addition to the marijuana, deputies seized marijuana edibles, concentrated cannabis, suspected Psilocybin mushrooms, and 20 firearms, including three semi-automatic rifles, Sanchez said.Two of the illegal dispensaries were located in Spring Valley, one in the 9900 block of Dolores Street and the other in 9500 block of Kenwood Drive.Two others were located in Lakeside, in the 8500 block of Winter Gardens Boulevard and the 900 block of Greenfield Drive in Lakeside.The fifth illegal dispensary was located in Chula Vista in the 300 block of Palomar Street. 1639

(KGTV) — Homeowners in east Chula Vista are hoping a meeting with police and city leaders will address a number of crime concerns in the area.The meeting started with an idea by Josh Roberts. Roberts lives in the community and was tired of seeing people complaining and reporting crime on Facebook instead of directly to the police department. According to Crimemapping, there were 44 crimes reported from July 5 to August 1 in a two mile radius in the 91915 zip code. The crimes range from burglaries to vehicle thefts to assault. REPORT: Chula Vista's rapid growth poses major challenges to public safety, trafficHowever, last December Wallet Hub ranked Chula Vista the safest city in the county and the third safest in the state. (KGTV) - The San Diego County Office of Education appointed a fiscal advisor with power to stay and rescind any financial decision made by the troubled Sweetwater Union High School District, the SDCOE said Friday.The SDCOE named the advisor, Dr. Mark Skvarna, to serve as the “eyes and ears” of county education officials inside the district, SDCOD spokesperson Music Watson told 10News. Dr. Skvarna will exercise authority to control any action by the Sweetwater board that’s inconsistent with the district’s ability to meet its financial obligations, wrote SDCOE Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Michael Simonson."What that means is that our fiscal advisor and the county superintendent of schools have authority to review board agenda items with a fiscal impact, comment on them and in extreme events rescind any action taken by the board that we believe is not in their best financial interest," said Simonson.SUHSD’s finances have been under the microscope since a million dollar budget shortfall for the 2018-2019 school year was announced. District officials previously said the shortage was due to expenses from staff raises, including costs of substitute teachers and an unexpected million expense for utilities. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect after two women discovered the body of a homeless man in Chula Vista Tuesday morning. According to police, two sisters were walking on the 1400 block of Broadway around 1:20 a.m. when they discovered a man who wasn’t breathing.Officers tried to save the man, later identified as 56-year-old Ivan Velez, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later found signs of trauma and are currently searching for a suspect. No description of the suspect was given.
