LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — When parents dropped off their kids during Lakeside Union School District's in-person summer school, the teachers noticed some of the youngest students were uneasy. The district includes some 5,200 students from transitional kindergarten up to 8th grade."Kids would say, 'I'm nervous. I'm anxious.' They weren't able to put language to it. Just knew something was wrong," said Dr. Kim Reed, an assistant superintendent for the district.Reed believes many other students also have those feelings, amid the isolation and other stressors hitting families during the pandemic. In response, the district will build a "social-emotional" component into the curriculum this fall."What we mean by "social-emotional" is really the kids' well-being, connectivity to peers and teachers, feelings of safety," said Reed. After training with counseling staff, teachers will — for about 20 to 30 minutes a day — leading virtual discussions with their students."Every student has a chance to have their voice heard ... every day, a group coming together for lessons on how to talk about, how to manage those worries and fears," said Reed.Reed says separately, teachers can include social-emotional learning in the lesson plan, if, for example, the topic of the pandemic will be coming up."Kids can't learn when they're afraid ... Our strategy is to address the social-emotional needs as a foundation and address their academic needs. We feel we'll then be meeting the needs of the whole child," said Reed.Reed says their social-emotional learning will be a mainstay, even when in-person classes resume,"We're hoping to do give students the skills to meet the challenge of our more complicated world," said Reed. The teachers union will be voting on some aspects of the social-emotional plan. The school year is set to begin Aug. 20. 1847

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -  A thief in a hoodie made off with a haul in La Mesa and the contents of that haul are sparking outrage.Outside her condo just off El Cajon Boulevard, Kathleen put out several bags and boxes right outside her front door Monday morning. "A lot of sweaters and warm winter clothes, a couple pair of shoes and a teddy bear," said Kathleen. Also included: Several throw rugs and some households items. Stuck on each box and bag was a sticky note with the name: Vietnam Veterans of America, the group picking up the donations."They weren't scheduled to come until Tuesday," said Kathleen. So when Kathleen came home Monday afternoon and discovered the donations gone, she checked her Ring camera footage. The video begins with a person in a hoodie, bending down, lifting a box and throw rug, and then running off. Kathleen says the camera wasn't rolling when the other stuff vanished."Really sad they take from Vietnam veterans," said Kathleen.Kathleen comes from a military family, including a brother who served in the Vietnam War."It's heartbreaking. These are people who wrote a blank check to the government with their lives, for our freedom," Kathleen.Neighbors saw the same hooded figure dumpster diving around the same time as the theft. LANSING, Mich. – A Michigan judge has dismissed a lawsuit by President Donald Trump's campaign in a dispute over whether Republican challengers had access to the handling of absentee ballots.Judge Cynthia Stephens noted that the lawsuit was filed late Wednesday afternoon, just hours before the last ballots were counted. She also said the defendant, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, was the wrong person to sue because she doesn’t control the logistics of local ballot counting, even if she is the state’s chief election officer. The Associated Press called the Michigan presidential election for Democrat Joe Biden on Wednesday evening. Trump won the state in 2016.The lawsuit claimed Benson, a Democrat, was allowing absentee ballots to be counted without teams of bipartisan observers as well as challengers. She was accused of undermining the “constitutional right of all Michigan voters ... to participate in fair and lawful elections.”Benson, through state attorneys, denied the allegations. Much of the dispute centered on the TCF Center in Detroit where pro-Trump protesters gathered while absentee ballots were being counted. 1144

LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas leader wants the city's airport renamed amid a wave of racial unrest and calls for removing brands, tributes and other items with racially-charged origins.McCarran International Airport, located next to the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, is arguably one of the most prominent places in Southern Nevada. In 1948 it was named for Sen. Patrick McCarran, a powerhouse in both state and national politics.McCarran represented Nevada from 1933 until his death in 1954 in Washington, D.C.During his time in public office, he was considered one of the biggest supporters of aviation, which was still getting off the ground in the 1930s, and sponsored key legislation that helped shape the modern air travel industry. However, historians have pointed out that McCarran's legacy is marred by racism, xenophobia and antisemitism."Pat McCarran was an evil man," Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom said.Segerblom wants to scrub McCarran's name from the airport and introduced a bill in the Nevada Legislature in 2017 to do just that."To have the first thing when you come to Nevada (be) McCarran Airport — when you look at his history, that's just unacceptable," Segerblom said.Segerblom wanted to rename the airport for longtime Nevada Sen. Harry Reid (D), but the bill ultimately failed."First off, I want to get rid of the name, but secondly, I want to honor Sen. Reid, he is really the father of modern Nevada," Segerblom said. There was push back, and Segerblom says he believes opponents felt using Reid's name as a replacement was too politically partisan."Our kids grow up hearing about McCarran airport; they don't know what that its, but they don't realize we are honoring somebody who didn't believe I should even be a citizen or have the right to vote, that's wrong," Segerblom said.Critics who are opposed to renaming the airport say McCarran was a critical part of history, and attempting to scrub his name from Las Vegas will not change that. But Segerblom argues that continuing to honor McCarran is unacceptable."We are a multicultural, multi-ethnic city, and for our airport to be named after a racist anti-Semite and other things is just unacceptable," Segerblom said.A name change would require a majority four-person vote by the Clark County Commission. If the name changes in the near future, estimates put the cost around million to replace signs, logos, letterheads, graphics and other items associated with the airport.Segerblom says he would raise funds privately to make the change happen. This story was originally published by Joe Bartels on KTNV in Las Vegas. 2611

LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) — Parents in Lemon Grove School District pulled their students from class Tuesday to protest against decisions being made, they say, without parent input. In March, 10News covered an emotional Lemon Grove school board meeting when parents fought to retain 16 teachers who had been designated for non-re-election. Those teachers chose to resign rather than have the designation placed on their permanent teaching records. The next regularly scheduled board meeting is Tuesday night, and parents plan to show up again to voice their complaints about the district, ranging from curriculum decisions, resource scarcity and student safety. One parent told 10News behavior issues are increasing in classrooms and the administration is failing to hold students accountable. A decline in classroom resources led her to pull one of her children from the district and enroll him in charter school. Several other parents at the rally say they have done the same, or are considering doing so, due to a variety of complaints. "We are not getting the basic resources and they are making decisions that don't make sense," says Rosa Carney. Tuesday's board meeting will be in open session at 6:00PM at Lemon Grove Library Community Room, 3001 School Lane, Lemon Grove. A spokesperson for the district sent us the following statement, outlining curriculum successes and resource allocation: 1409
