Women senators from both parties — all 22 of them — called on Senate leadership to bring about legislation to update and strengthen the procedures available to survivors of all forms of sexual harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces.The House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation in February aimed at preventing sexual harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces and helping the survivors of these acts seek justice.The full text of the Senators' letter reads:Dear Leader McConnell and Senator Schumer:We write to express our deep disappointment that the Senate has failed to enact meaningful reforms to the Congressional Accountability Act of 1995. We urge you to bring before the full Senate legislation that would update and strengthen the procedures available to survivors of sexual harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces.Everyone deserves to work in an environment free from harassment and discrimination. In November, with your leadership, the Senate took an important first step in the effort to end harassment and discrimination in congressional workplaces with the passage of S. Res. 330, which requires anti-harassment and discrimination training for all Senators and staff at least once each Congress. While this training requirement was a significant step to address workplace harassment, there was broad, bipartisan agreement at that time that more had to be done to support survivors.Although the Congressional Accountability Act (CAA) implemented meaningful reforms when it became law in 1995, it continues to require survivors to endure an antiquated dispute resolution process, including a month-long counseling session, forced mediation and a 30-day “cooling off” period before a victim can make a decision whether to pursue justice in a courtroom or continue with administrative procedures. The time has come to rewrite the CAA to provide a more equitable process that supports survivors of harassment and discrimination.The Senate’s inaction stands in stark contrast to the bipartisan effort in the House of Representatives that led to the passage of bipartisan CAA reform legislation in February. The House bill includes a number of important provisions, such as eliminating waiting periods before a victim can take their case to court, increased transparency for awards and settlements, and a requirement that Members of the Senate and House pay for an award or settlement stemming from a case of sexual harassment or discrimination that they personally commit.When the Senate considers CAA reform legislation, we will also have the ability to address an inequity that now exists between House and Senate staff. The House of Representatives passed H. Res. 724 that provides House staff who are survivors of harassment or discrimination access to free legal representation. Senate staff who face similar harassment or discrimination must pay personally for legal representation or represent themselves through complicated legal proceedings. Therefore, the Senate must act quickly to provide Senate staff with the same resources as their House colleagues.Inaction is unacceptable when a survey shows that four out of 10 women congressional staffers believe that sexual harassment is a problem on Capitol Hill and one out of six women in the same survey responded that they have been the survivors of sexual harassment. Survivors who have bravely come forward to share their stories have brought to light just how widespread harassment and discrimination continue to be throughout Capitol Hill. No longer can we allow the perpetrators of these crimes to hide behind a 23-year-old law. in order to help produce medical equipment for those fighting the coronavirus pandemic.Ford says it will team with 3M, GE Healthcare and the United Auto Workers Union to assemble more than 100,000 face shields per week and use its in-house 3D printing capability to produce disposable respirators for healthcare workers."This is such a critical time for America and the world. The respirators can be produced in Ford facilities by UAW workers.In order to speed up the process, Ford and 3M teams have been locating off-the-shelf parts — like fans from the Ford F-150's cooled seats or 3M HEPA air filters and portable tool battery packs. All these spare parts can be used to make thousands of respirators. Ford is looking at how it might produce these new-generation PAPRs in one of its Michigan manufacturing facilities, helping 3M boost production potentially tenfold."Working with 3M and GE, we have empowered our teams of engineers and designers to be scrappy and creative to quickly help scale up production of this vital equipment," said Jim Hackett, Ford's president and CEO. "We've been in regular dialogue with federal, state and local officials to understand the areas of greatest needs. We are focusing our efforts to help increase the supply of respirators, face shields and ventilators that can help assist health care workers, first responders, critical workers as well as those who have been infected by the virus.""We're exploring all available opportunities to further expand 3M's capacity and get healthcare supplies as quickly as possible to where they're needed most – which includes partnering with other great companies like Ford," said Mike Roman, 3M's chairman of the board and CEO. "It's crucial that we mobilize all resources to protect lives and defeat this disease, and I'm incredibly grateful to Ford and their employees for this partnership."VentilatorsIn addition, Ford and GE Healthcare are working together to expand the production of a simplified version of GE Healthcare's existing ventilator design to support patients with respiratory failure or difficulty breathing caused by COVID-19. Roughly 75,000 of these shields are expected to be finished this week and more than 100,000 face shields per week will be produced at Ford subsidiary Troy Design and Manufacturing's facilities in Plymouth, Mich.Ford is leveraging its Advanced Manufacturing Center in Redford, Mich., and in-house 3D printing capabilities to manufacture disposable respirators, which are needed to help filter the air healthcare workers and first responders breathe. Once approved by the proper health agency, Ford will initially start at a pace equal to 1,000 per month but will quickly grow production as fast as possible.Ford is evaluating a separate effort, not involving GE Healthcare with the U.K. government to produce additional ventilators.In China, Ford of China's joint venture partner Jiangling Motors also has donated 10 specially equipped Transit ambulance vans to hospitals in Wuhan.Ford is also reacquiring 165,000 N95 respirators from China that were originally sent by Ford to China earlier this year to help combat coronavirus.Ford has also kicked off a working team to help hospitals locate and secure urgently needed surgical and N95 respirators. WOONSOCKET, R.I. – CVS Health announced Monday that it’s actively recruiting candidates to fill about 15,000 positions as we head into the fall and winter months.These new workers will help the company handle the expected increase in COVID-19 and flu cases, as well as the rollout of a potential coronavirus vaccine.CVS says more than 10,000 of the new roles are full- and part-time licensed pharmacy technicians at pharmacy locations and will be filled as soon as possible. Many of the positions are temporary with the possibility of becoming permanent.And in honor of Pharmacy Technician Day on Tuesday, CVS is advocating for an expanded scope of practice that would allow trained pharmacy technicians to administer COVID-19 vaccinations under the supervision of an immunization-certified pharmacist.CVS believes pharmacy technicians will play an integral role in safely and quickly distributing vaccines, extending the capacity of the health care workforce to address the pandemic.Along with helping with vaccinations, technicians help with COVID-19 testing, processing prescriptions, dispensing medications, providing information to customers and performing administrative tasks.“Additional team members typically are needed every flu season,” said Lisa Bisaccia, Chief Human Resources Officer, CVS Health. “However, we’re estimating a much greater need for trained pharmacy technicians this year given the continued presence of COVID-19 in our communities.
