SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new political party is accused of tricking some San Diego voters into joining them.San Diego Registrar of Voters' Michael Vu told 10News he has referred the matter to the District Attorney and the Secretary of State's Fraud Investigation Unit.The Common Sense Party was founded by former Republicans and is currently attempting to get the 67,000 signatures needed to appear on future ballots as an state-recognized political party. A co-founder told 10News the party hired a third-party company in San Diego to help gather the signatures.RELATED: Early voting begins in California Primary as San Diego County sends out mail ballotsHowever, as first uncovered in an investigation by 10News media partner KPBS, dozens of San Diego voters who are registered for the Common Sense Party say they did not remember signing up and, in fact, had not even heard of the party.Some said the signature gatherer told them they were signing a housing petition. Others said they were given a voter registration form that did not include a place to indicate party preference. When KPBS obtained the form that had been filed by the signature party gatherer for one of the voters, she said she hadn't made any changes. "Oh, no. This is not something I recognize. That is not my handwriting. I don't remember signing this form out," SDSU student Kameron Dollinger said.Julie Meier Wright, a well known civic and political leader who helped found the Common Sense Party, told 10News they are shocked by the accusations and are working to get to the bottom of what happened. 10News left a voice mail for the signature gathering company, but has not heard back.Vu urges all San Diegans to check their registration online before going to vote, in order to ensure that they will get the proper ballot. 1805

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Pacific Beach woman is appealing for tips after a hit-and-run driver struck the motor scooter she was riding, leaving her with serious injuries.On Saturday afternoon around 1 p.m., yoga teacher Fallon Lev was headed to a yoga studio, riding her motor scooter on Ingraham Street, when she exited onto Sunset Cliffs Boulevard."Just gotten onto the ramp, going a reasonable speed," said Lev.In a one-lane section, she looked to her left and felt a car right next to her."It bumped me, causing the scooter wiggle back and forth. Instantly, I'm like on the floor, and my whole body is tumbleweeding on the cement. I must have gone five or six times," said Lev.She says the driver kept going. Later, at the hospital came the diagnosis and surgery."I broke my pelvis in two different areas and have these two bars sticking out of my hipbone and a bar straight across," said Lev.She also suffered a painful road rash and a broken tooth. Her road to recovery will be a long one. Lev, a yoga teacher whose income was greatly impacted by the pandemic, is trying to stay positive. The actions of the driver make her angry."I'm trying not to affect it my healing. Of course, it's extremely disturbing and disappointing ... There is no way the driver didn’t see me go down. They actively chose to leave me," said Lev.In fact, Lev remembers feeling like this was no accident. She was leaving traffic on a one-lane section of the roadway."I felt like it was on purpose. I wasn’t going fast enough, and that was my payback," said Lev.Lev is now hoping for tips to track down a hit-and-run driver."The driver deserves to know that’s not the way you treat a human being," said Lev.Lev recalls an older model, maroon sedan, which may have been the car right behind the car that hit her. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man arrested Tuesday after leading authorities on a pursuit through the East County Tuesday is being charged with two separate stabbings that occurred hours earlier.San Diego County Sheriff's (SDSO) deputies arrested Patrick Douglas, 51, near Highway 94 and Freezer Blvd. following a vehicle pursuit with deputies earlier Tuesday.Douglas was charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with two stabbings the same day in El Cajon and La Mesa.Deputies said the La Mesa stabbing occurred at the 7-Eleven at 4610 Avocado Blvd. A female delivery driver for Frito Lays, identified as 35-year-old Dina Hammond, staggered into the store with multiple stab wounds to her upper torso after having just made a delivery. 757

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego family is living in an empty home and says nearly everything they own is being held hostage by a moving company.They’re part of a growing group of people around the country who say they’re victims of a deceptive bait-and-switch operation. 10News has spoken to a representative of the moving company who denies wrongdoing.Over FaceTime, Brad and Vanessa Angle gave 10News a tour of their house in North Carolina. They recently moved there from their home in Poway. The family is sleeping on mattresses on the floor since their furniture and household items never arrived. The goal of relocating was to live a stress-free life, but the feeling of emptiness is driving them to tears.“It affects a lot it. It affects my daily life. I have to keep going, you know. I try to stand up every day for my kids. I have three kids that I have to be there for,” Vanessa said.What hurts the most is losing the memories. Her husband, Brad, says Titan Moving and Storage has the family’s irreplaceable belongings, like the photos and videos of their kids, and Vanessa’s wedding dress.On Titan Moving and Storage’s paperwork to the Angle family, it shows the company’s address is in Chantilly, Va.The Angles say the company had originally given them a binding estimate of ,300 with ,205 down. Yet after movers loaded everything up during the family’s moving day in July, the Angles say the movers claimed that the family had more items than what they were originally quoted for. The movers doubled the estimate.The Angles say the movers demanded a partial payment.“I think it was ,700-something dollars that we had to write a check for,” says Brad. He says his family was assured that any issues could be worked out with a company associate come Monday.Monday came and went. “[An associate] answered the phone on my first call and then immediately hung up and then wouldn't answer after that,” says Brad of his attempt to resolve the dispute with the company.The Angles stopped payment on the check and the situation went from bad to worse.The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, or FMCSA, is the government agency that oversees interstate moving trucks. The agency reports that the carrier has never been authorized to move household goods. The FMCSA is currently investigating the carrier.This year alone, the FMCSA reports there have been 98 complaints filed against the carrier. Complaints have come in from customers like Chris Baumann in Florida. He says the company pulled a bait-and-switch operation on him.“If I didn't have a headset on, you'd hear this house echoing. It's empty,” he said over video chat about not receiving his belongings from the moving company.He and others say they had checked reviews before hiring the company. Titan Moving and Storage only has one star on Yelp, but there are other companies listed on Yelp with similar names and better reviews, causing confusion for customers. The Angles recently got what they call "hostage” photos from the carrier. They were sent pictures of their items that are being held at an undisclosed storage facility in California. The company tells us it won’t release anything until receiving a storage payment from the family.“They're trying to charge us over a thousand dollars a month for storage which is insane,” says Brad.Titan Moving and Storage’s website has been down for several days. A manager with the company told us they're not taking new customers. He declined a taped interview but acknowledged that the company does not have a license to move household goods.He claimed it was due to a “filing issue” and said the company works with licensed third-party movers. The FMCSA tells 10News that the company is still not authorized to use third-party movers for household goods. The manager also told us that the company tried to resolve the matter with the Angles last month by offering them a reduced moving fee.The Angles call that a lie.“I see it as a crime. They don't have a license,” adds Vanessa.According to the FMCSA, the FMCSA does not have the authority to resolve claims against a moving company. State law enforcement, transportation and consumer affairs agencies are responsible for pursuing suspected incidents of moving fraud and regulating the operations of intrastate moves.According to the California Department of Consumer Affairs, moving companies that operate within California are required to be licensed by the Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation (BEARHFTI), part of the Department of Consumer Affairs.The BEARHFTI became the new licensing and regulatory home for household movers on July 1, 2018. The BEARHFTI is aware of the consumer complaints against Titan Moving and Storage but cannot comment specifically during the open investigation.A spokesperson tells 10News that the company is not licensed with the BEARHFTI.A sergeant with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department tells 10News that its detectives are looking into the matter. 5031

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit that drives sick kids and their families to the hospital is celebrating one million miles.Climbing into an Emilio Nares Foundation car, mom Latoya Johnson and her 19-year-old daughter Tay Tay started recalling the memories over the last decade. They were one of ENF's first rides. The non-profit was founded in 2003 and began giving rides in August 2005, according to ENF Vice President of Programs Luz Quiroga. The program expanded from San Diego to Orange County in 2009. Rides started in the Imperial Valley in 2015, and expanded again to San Bernardino, Riverside, and South Los Angeles in 2019.The founders lost their son, Emilio, when he was 6 years old to leukemia. During the exhausting hours of treatment, Emilio's parents realized other families didn't have enough support. When Emilio passed, they turned his loss into a legacy.Johnson said Tay Tay was first diagnosed with a tumor the size of a golf ball in her chest when she was 4-and-a-half years old."It was behind her left lung, it was growing attached to her lung," Johnson said. She found it hard to get to doctor's appointments and treatment. 'It was about three buses, two trolleys and a bus on the other side,' Johnson said. The trip took two and a half hours, then they had to walk up a hill to get to Rady Children's Hospital.In the doctor's office she saw a flier for the Emilio Nares Foundation, and they have been getting picked up ever since, shortening their trip to a half-hour door-to-door.Once they kicked the tumor in Tay Tay's chest, they found out when Tay Tay was 15 that she had a brain tumor. "She's 19 years old now, so she literally is a walking blessing, a walking miracle, and I wouldn't trade her for nothing in the world," Johnson said smiling, pinching her daughter's cheek.Johnson said without the foundation she would have been in tears and they absolutely saved her daughter's life.With the foundation celebrating one million miles, Johnson is working on understanding the impact the foundation had not only on their lives, but on 4,000 children."I wanna cry, because I know I'm crying but the tears won't come out because they're all on the inside, but it's amazing. I'm just happy and blessed for you guys," Johnson said hugging CEO Karen Terra.She hopes telling her story will get more families the help they need.ENF kicked off their "Ride with Emilio" campaign Monday and it continues through the end of the month.
