BEIJING, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Snow fell again in Beijing Saturday night, three days after the city had its first snow this winter.Snow continued falling on Sunday morning but was forecasted to stop in the daytime.From 8:00 p.m. Saturday to 8:00 a.m. Sunday, precipitation in Beijing averaged 1.7 mm to 3.1 mm in downtown areas, local meteorologists said.Zhang Qiang, head of the municipal artificial weather intervention office, said the office began cloud seeding and was continuing efforts to increase snowfall from 7:25 p.m. Saturday in the nine districts and counties of Miyun, Mentougou, Yanqing, Haidian, Pinggu, Changping, Shijingshan, Fangshan and Huairou.By 8:20 a.m. Sunday, 657 silver iodide rods had been used to increase the snowfall.More than 3,583 people and 768 vehicles have been mobilized since Saturday to clear the snow on major roads of Beijing to ensure road transportation, according to the city transportation departments.Beijing had its first snow of the winter Wednesday and Thursday after 108 days of zero precipitation.Meteorologists said the snowfall in Beijing had helped ease the pressure of drought."Beijing is expected to have another cold front from Feb. 15 to Feb. 16, but it is not sure if there will be another snowfall then," said Liao Xiaonong, chief weatherman with the Beijing Meteorological Bureau.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 6 (Xinhua)-- Latest research released Friday shows that Google Android has become the No.1 smartphone platform in the United States in the first quarter as more smartphone manufacturers have adopted the operating system.During the three months ending in March, Google Android grew 6. 0 percentage points to 34.7 percent market share, among the 72.5 million U.S. smartphone users, reported comScore, an Internet marketing research company.The number of smartphone users increased by 15 percent on a quarter-on-quarter basis, said the research.Research in Motion, developer of Blackberry smartphones, ranked second with 27.1 percent, a slide of 4.5 percentage points on a quarter-on-quarter basis. Apple grew 0.5 points to 25.5 percent share, followed by Microsoft (7.5 percent) and Palm (2.8 percent).According to the research, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices in the first quarter. Samsung ranked as the top handset maker with 24.5 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, and LG ranked second with 20.9 percent share, followed by Motorola (15.8 percent) and RIM (8.4 percent). Apple continued to gain share following the launch of the Verizon iPhone, growing by 1.1 percentage points to 7.9 percent of subscribers.On mobile content use, 68.6 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device in March. PANAMA CITY, April 17 (Xinhua) -- In Latin America there are 600,000 people infected with the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and about 50 percent of them receive treatment, regional director of UNAIDS for Latin America Cesar Nunez said on Sunday."We have to work a lot for the other half get treatment," Nunez told Xinhua during the 124th Assembly of the Inter-parliamentarian Assembly hosted in Panama City from April 15 to 20.Nunez urged the governments of the region to redouble efforts to control this pandemic, by improving the prevention campaigns to stop new infections."The availability of the medicines has grown in the last 10 years and the countries have taken this commitment, however, the number of infections each time is bigger than the number of people we can treat," he said.According to Nunez, despite the increase of new infections among women, the men sector continue being one of the most affected social groups by this virus."In Latin America we have an epidemic where the most affected are men, followed by homosexuals, lesbians and sex workers," he said.Nunez said that during the meeting with the parliamentarians, they exchanged experiences to contribute to improve the management of this disease."We have met with parliamentarians who have voted for more budget to buy more medicines, in favor of laws for more education about this topic and participation in the exchange of information to know about the advances and backwards of the fight against Aids," he said.Some 800 parliamentarians from 125 countries attended the 124th Assembly to debate the recent events in the Arab world, the disaster in Japan and sustainable development.
