Climbing is a sport that's getting more and more popular. For the first time next year, it’ll be an Olympic sport. Additionally, a documentary featuring professional rock climber Alex Honnold took the Oscar win at this year’s Academy Awards! After filming climbers for two decades, filmmaker Peter Mortimer is happy to see more people taking notice. As amazing as it is to see the shots he captures, what may be more breathtaking is what you don’t see: the work behind the scenes. It’s all to bring the world of climbing out of the wilderness and onto the big screen “There's no stadium, there's no arena and nobody really knows what they're doing,” Mortimer says. Mortimer is a climber and the co-founder of Sender Films, the company that produced “The Dawn Wall.” Mortimer and his team followed two men as they attempted to climb a 3,000-foot rock face in Yosemite National Park. The film captured the climbers’ journey from hanging from the wall to even sleeping on the wall. “We knew if they did it, we had to be there,” Mortimer says. “But we also said, for seven years really, were like this is probably never going to happen, but it's worth the risk.” It took the climbers seven years to finally make it. Mortimer and his team were there to capture the moment. Then, the film received more awards than Mortimer ever imagined. One film led to another, and as the climbing industry grew, so did Sender Films. The company has produced more than 40 hours of climbing films, winning two Emmys and putting on a film tour with more than 400 shows around the world. “I thought rock climbing was something that was just a little a little hobby at the time, and I’m just still surprised what it's become,” says Zachary Barr, a director with Sender Films. However, there have been challenges. “I've seen so many of my, you know, really close friends die in the mountains,” Mortimer says. But the filmmaker says he's approached this journey in film, as he would a climb. “No one's climbed that like. That could be an amazing thing, that the path doesn't really exist,” he says. 2085

CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Zoo announced they euthanized a 22-year-old white lion on Monday, citing age-related health issues. Zoo officials said they made the difficult decision to euthanize the lion, Prosperity, because zookeepers observed her mobility and quality of life decrease over a period of several months. The median life expectancy for white lions is 16 years. Zoo officials attribute Prosperity's longevity to the special geriatric enrichment, diet and care she received from their care team. 520

Despite the rise of streaming services like Netflix, going to the movies is still a billion dollar business in America. COVID-19 has closed the doors of theaters across the nation, but as things start to reopen, some theaters are prepping for incoming changes. The Ruth Sokolof Theater in Omaha was getting ready for a busy summer, but thanks to the pandemic they were dealt a plot twist. “Our priority is and will continue to be reopening when it’s safe and appropriate to do so,” said Casey Logan, Deputy Director of Film Streams.Their doors have been shut since early March, and with so many seats close together, things will definitely look different when the show goes on.“A checkerboard style seating where there’s groups of seating all with six feet or more apart so that there is that distance between groups in the theaters,” said Logan. He says certain events like one-time screenings with a visiting filmmaker that brings hundreds of people won’t be presented the same or maybe, not at all. “We’re just expected that there would be events that in normal times that we would be presenting that we won’t be able to present in the months ahead,” said Logan.Limited crowd size and social distancing are the two big changes, but there’s other things theaters should consider.“You don’t give the same seat to two consecutive shows and in-between screenings you have to somehow sanitize the theater,” said Dr. Phani Tej Adidam, Chair & Professor of Marketing of Entrepreneurship at UNO.He adds moviegoers should be part of a loyalty program for contact tracing purposes.“If something happens they should have the ability to trace all the people who came in and all the people they were in contact with,” said Adidam.Theaters may struggle with content as well, as summer blockbusters continue to be delayed. Logan says it may take time, but he’s confident the industry will bounce back.“I think people miss that experience of coming to cinemas, we’re certainly hearing from a lot of people that are looking forward to the day when we reopen so that they can have those experiences again,” said Logan. He also says changes to concessions will also be important to limit person to person interaction, and that buying tickets online before the show, is something movie goers should take advantage of. 2313

Dolphins may be in serious trouble as temperatures rise with global warming. After a heat wave struck the waters of Western Australia in 2011, scientists noticed that warmer ocean temperatures caused fewer dolphin births and decreased the animal's survival rate. The heat wave caused the water temperature of an area called Shark Bay to rise about 4 degrees above the annual average. After the heat wave, the survival rate for some species of 453
