SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Days after Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new law aimed at child sex abuse, three San Diego women came forward to announce a lawsuit against the Diocese of San Diego. The three women say they were abused by Monsignor Gregory Sheridan as children. Sheridan worked in this diocese for 35 years and is on the diocese’s list of credibly accused abusive priests. This new measure gives survivors of childhood sexual assault, regardless of their age, a three-year “window” to bring a civil lawsuit against any perpetrator and employer or third party that was aware of misconduct that created a risk of childhood sexual assault. The new law also extends the statute of limitations for survivors of childhood sexual assault, giving survivors more time to file civil lawsuits: up to their 40th birthday (previously their 26th birthday) or within five years (previously three years) from the date of discovery of an adult psychological injury caused by the childhood sexual assault. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Before Vice President Mike Pence made his way to Coronado, he spent the morning at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel.The Vice President and Second lady stayed there during their San Diego Visit. A few protestors inflated the now well-known "Baby Trump" outside of the hotel; It's possible the Vice President got a look at the giant balloon. "We're hoping that the Vice President sees this and sees that there is resistance here in San Diego," says protestor Will Johnson. The giant balloon was an attention grabber for many who saw it on Park Boulevard. "I knew he was coming to town, but I didn't know he was staying here," says Kate Permenter. Permenter is in town for a convention and staying at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, saying, "So last night people kind of started freaking out."Outside of the hotel, security checked every car making its way into the garage. Hotel guests say there are dozens of police officers and secret service agents inside of the hotel. "At every entrance, there are cops just kind of staring at you."Dozens of officers escorted the motorcade as the Vice President left downtown this morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium welcomed two new residents to its waters this month, a first-ever for the aquarium.Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography bred and hatched two rare Weedy Seadragons for the first time, making the aquarium one of the few in the world to now house the fish.The fragile newborns, native to southern Australia, are under an inch long, but have already started eating tiny shrimp. We have spent over 25 years working with these animals and love that we have made the next steps to conserve this delicate species.”Weedy Seadragons perform an elaborate mating display, spinning snout-to-snout and moving up and down in a water column to transfer eggs from the female onto the male's tail, where they are fertilized and hatched 6 weeks later. We're going to get involved soon on a federal basis if they can't clean up their act."In San Diego's case, several options have been used to address local homelessness in recent months:The city opened Bridge Shelters and is set to open its fourth location this month; Parking lots where people living in cars can sleep for free;Storage lockers for homeless people to store their belongings, with a third facility being proposed;City funded program, Wheels of Change, to employ homeless people to clean up streets;Still, according to a Point-In-Time Count by the Regional Task Force on Homeless, there are a little more than 8,000 homeless individuals in San Diego County. That number splits into 4,476 unsheltered people and 3,626 classified as sheltered in the county.Members of the Trump Administration visited Los Angeles this month to tour the city's homeless encampments. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County public health officials have released guidance for celebrating Halloween this month, including recommendations for trick-or-treating and parties.The county is recommending that residents avoid traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating, "trunk-or-treating" where candy is offered from cars, or leaving bowls of candy for others at their door this Halloween due to the pandemic.For those who want to find a safe alternative to traditional trick-or-treating, the county recommends "one-way" trick-or-treating where residents leave individually wrapped goodies bags outside for families to grab while maintaining physical distance, such as at the end of the driveway or yard.Parents are also asked to consider giving away treats other than candy, such as stickers, pencils, or mini pumpkins that can be sanitized by parents before given to kids.There are several activities that are not allowed, according to the county, including:In-person gatherings, parties, and events with non-household members even if gatherings are outdoors because physical distancing will not be easy to maintain,Carnivals, petting zoos, festivals, and live entertainment are not allowed because of frequent interaction with high touch surfaces by children and participants, andAny gatherings already not allowed under current public health ordersHaunted houses are not recommended because of the potential for crowds in tight spaces and poor ventilation, making safety and social distancing a challenge.County officials recommend that San Diegans celebrate through:Online parties or costume contestsDrive-thru events and car paradesDecorating homes and yardsMovie nights within households or at drive-in theaters, andPumpkin patches where social distancing and increased hand hygiene is possibleThe county says that whichever way residents end up celebrating Halloween, it's important that they continue to wash and sanitize their hands often and thoroughly, avoid close contact with individuals that are not in the same household, wear a face covering, and stay home and away from others if sick.More Halloween safety resources are available on the county's website. 2175
