SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local VFW posts are bracing for the new restrictions to kick-in on Saturday.The restrictions result from an increase in COVID-19 cases in the county, putting the county in the state's purple tier, the tier with the toughest covid-19 related restrictions.Mike Hill, the post commander at VFW 5985 in Pacific Beach, says they are already struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic because of the restrictions."There are 22 VFW posts and more American Legion posts through San Diego County, and all of us rely on having events and having people coming to our canteen, which is sort of military for a bar and spend money there, and that helps support us," Hill said. "We've eaten up most of our savings to pay the bills while we've been closed."He says they have relied on donations so far and will be needing more the longer the pandemic lasts."I will tell you the members, and I will be dialing for dollars," Hill said. He says they will start within their members first, then the community."We'll reach out to the community and hope that some of them will value this place that's been in the community for 90 years and let it still be a home for veterans to be around other veterans," he said.VFW 5985 has been closed most days except Tuesdays and Fridays to make meals for dozens of veterans, their families, and those who need it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Legoland debuted a new land for youngsters as well as a train attraction for park guests Thursday.Park officials welcomed in the addition of Duplo Playtown and a new mini-locomotive in a ribbon cutting with families from Ronald McDonald House Charities. A special check presentation of ,000 was also made to Ronald McDonald House. The park says the new Duplo Playtown will give guests the best views of Miniland U.S.A. from high atop the theme park. The land is geared for kids five and under and features ten interactive areas with sounds and games to entertain.The new mini-locomotive, the Legoland Express, was also unveiled. The ride will sit at the edge of Fun Town, perfect for children to experience their first theme park ride and views of the park. 787

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Locally and nationally, the calls are growing louder for some immigrant detainees to be released. In 2018, Kazakhstan native Satbay Kydyrali, 31, made his way to a local border crossing "He crossed border, turned himself in and asked for asylum," said Almas Irgebayev, Kydyrali's brother.Irgebayev says the asylum claim was denied and is now under appeal, a decision that could be years away. Meanwhile his brother continues to being held at Otay Mesa Detention Center. "Last three days, I was just crying when I think about him," said Irgebayev.Irgebayev says his brother is coughing, and in a cell with 7 other men. They are less than two feet apart, and most of the other men are also coughing. His brother told him none of the staff is wearing masks, and the detainees clean their own cell twice a day. The two brothers talk on the phone every day."He says that he wants to get out. I was crying on the phone. I heard him crying as well," said Irgebayev.Irgebayev is fearful because his brother is at-risk. He contracted tuberculosis as a child and has developed chronic breathing issues."I'm in a panic. I am feeling very bad, because I'm helpless," said Irgebayev. Similar sentiments were on display at a socially distant, vehicle protest near the federal courthouse downtown. Immigrant advocates were asking for at-risk detainees to be released. On the same day, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus called on Homeland Security officials to release low-priority detainees.In a statement, a DHS spokesperson says they're following CDC guidelines for disease monitoring and management protocols.' Irgabayev believes that statement doesn't reflect reality."I'm just afraid he is going to die in there," said Irgebayev.Irgabayev says his brother is in day three of a hunger strike protesting the conditions. The number of detainees on the hunger strike has shrunk from 90 to eight since the first day.An employee at the Otay Mesa Detention Center has tested positive, the first employee so far, according to prison company CivicCore. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In three weeks San Diego County will elect its next district attorney,  and in a recent poll a large number of voters indicated that they're still undecided. The results of our scientific 10News Union-Tribune poll shows the battle between Summer Stephan and challenger Genevieve Jones-Wright is wide open. If the election were held today, Summer Stephan would get 35 percent of the vote. Genevieve Jones-Wright would get 22 percent and 43 percent of those polled said they are undecided. "Those polls are consistent with what our campaign research shows," Jones-Wright told 10News. "We knew we were up against a political machine and it really is no surprise to me that she's up on the polls."Progressive candidate Jones-Wright says Stephan got a head start, by being appointed to the district attorney job when Bonnie Dumanis left. Jones-Wright said she thinks the poll shows her campaign is gaining steam.Stephan was encouraged by the poll numbers. "This is very encouraging, what you're telling me, because it shows that what we're doing is working," she told 10News. "That San Diegans are enjoying that we're one of the safest urban regions in the country and that they really prefer experience over an experiment."The poll shows that Stephan's voter base is republican, white and over the age of 35.
