JACKSON, Miss. — A federal appeals court is keeping a block on a Mississippi law that would ban most abortions as early as six weeks — when many women may not even know they are pregnant. A panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals made the decision Thursday. The appeals judges agreed with a district court judge who blocked the six-week ban from taking effect in 2019. It was just an ordinary day for a snowplow driver in California, until he struck a car buried in snow -- then his day turned into a rescue mission.On February 17, the driver was clearing the snow-covered roads of South Lake Tahoe when he struck the back of a car that was illegally parked on the street. The driver contacted police to start the process of getting the vehicle towed out of the way, but as police and the driver started to dig out the car, to their surprise, a woman stuck her hand out of the car window waving for help.She said she had been there four to five hours, but the amount of snow covering her car led officials to believe she possibly was there longer."Being inside of a buried car, or starting a car buried in snow, could have deadly consequences," said Chris Fiore, communications manager for the City of South Lake Tahoe. "If we had not gotten to her, I'm afraid this story would have a very different ending."It took some time to dig her out, but the 48-year-old woman was able to walk away from the scene uninjured.City officials released news of the incident on Tuesday to warn residents about parking illegally, especially while the area braces for another winter storm."One of the biggest issues we've had this winter is illegally parked cars," said Ray Jarvis, public works director, 1331

In Kentucky, bourbon is more than just big business, it’s part of the culture, influencing everything from the arts to the economy. Tourists Anna and Michael Kraczyk says their love of bourbon brought them to Bourbon Country. They're just two of the million-plus people expected to visit Kentucky this year, specifically for the bourbon experience. The Kraczyks say they plan on spending a lot of money during their time in the Bluegrass State. “A couple of thousand,” Anna says. “Yeah, a couple of thousand. It’s a great investment.” In Kentucky, bourbon production has increased 115 percent since 2009 and has grown to a multi-billion dollar industry. “When people come to town and visit us, they don’t just visit this location,” says Jeff Crowe of Heaven Hill Distillery. “They have a place to overnight accommodate, or they have to have a place to eat breakfast or diner or have another cocktail with their family in the evening.”Crowe says this American-made, barrel-aged spirit has created international interest, and believes the bourbon boom will continue to grow. “I think that explosion is now where near close to the final stages,” he says. “We’re excited about the future.” Now, there’s a new player in the market trying to cash in with new product. Kartik Kamat is making gin out of Kentucky-grown corn, mixing the flavors of his Indian heritage with his American upbringing to create Holi Gin. “I wanted to solve something in the distilled spirit industry,” Kamat says. Released in September, Holi Gin has been well received, medaling at competitions. Now, the product is available at some of the biggest spirit stores in the country.“We are our distributor’s fasting-selling gin,” Kamat says. “But it took us a long time to understand that we even had a product to get it over here.” This product, however, represents something much more than liquor. It’s been nearly nine months since Hurricane Michael hit the Florida Panhandle. Though time has passed, those living in the remains of what Hurricane Michael left in its wake are struggling. Tyndall Air Force Base is one of the many places still trying to recover and rebuild. Hurricane Michael was the first Category Hurricane to strike the contiguous United States Since Andrew in 1992. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Hurricane Michael did nearly billion in damage. However, nearly nine months since the storm there is still plenty of damage and debris in Panama City, Panama City Beach, and Mexico Beach, where Michael hit the hardest.“Life at Tyndall prior to the storm was your normal Air Force Base,” says Col. Jeff Hawkins, the vice wing commander of the 325th flight wing at Tyndall Air Force Base. “When the storm was about to hit, we had about three and a half days to prepare. We had to recall all of our pilots and maintainers to prepare the aircraft to launch. Within 18 hours, we ended up getting 70 percent of our aircraft out.” According to Hawkins, the aircraft that weren’t able to make it out, including 17 F-22 jets, were damaged, but are currently getting repairs. “About 50 percent of them were destroyed, and 50 percent of them were able to be recovered," Hawkins explains. "The total cost for the Air Force is estimated around .25 billion for the entire recovery. The rebuild portion itself will cost around .7 billion.”Hawkins said the recovery of the entire base is estimated to take between five and six years.While no one lost their life in the storm, plenty did lose their homes. “Everybody’s got a different scenario they’re dealing with,” Hawkins says. “Some people owned homes in the community, and they are in the process of rebuilding those homes and repairing. Unfortunately, for those that lived on the base, they didn’t have a home to come back to. For instance, my family is living in Eglin Air Force Base, and I commute here three or four days a week.” Eglin Air Force base is nearly two hours west of Tyndall. However, according to Hawkins, Tyndall AFB is so vital to the military because of the training it provides and the airspace. When the storm hit, the base had to take a hiatus between 60 and 90 days. But now, training continues while the base still recovers. “The one mission that is currently not being flown at Tyndall Air Force Base itself is we have moved our F-22 aircraft to Eglin," Hawkins says. "But with every bad there’s good, so there’s an opportunity to build the Air Force Base of the future.” 2607
