Hurricane Dorian devastated the Bahamas, when it made landfall as a Category 5 storm this week. Sarah Ann Showell, whose family owns a resort on the island, has now seen the catastrophic damage for herself. “They don’t look anything [like] they’re supposed to,” she says. “Entire buildings are flattened, trees are all snapped like toothpicks, there’s no greenery left.”She flew over Green Turtle Cay, a Bahamian island hit by hurricane Dorian, to see what the storm had done. "It’s actually hard to figure out what you’re looking at, and these are places that you know very well," Showell says.Showell needed to see what the storm did to her family's resort, Green Turtle Club, the largest employer on the island with about 50 employees. While the storm left its mark, she says everyone she knows who stayed on this island for Dorian is safe. Her marina's docks are still standing, but some of the club’s buildings and many other of the island's structures are destroyed.“From the air, it’s pretty crazy to see because it’s really hard to recognize places that you’ve been going your whole life," she says.She is now leading an effort to get help to the people of the Bahamas. FALLS CHURCH, Va. — A federal judge has released Chelsea Manning from a jail outside the nation's capital, ending roughly a year of incarceration that the former Army intelligence analyst served for refusing to testify to a grand jury. Government lawyers are due in federal appeals court Tuesday to argue their case for why the District of Columbia and Maryland shouldn't be allowed to sue President Donald Trump over his ongoing interest in his family company, the Trump Organization.It's the latest effort by Justice Department attorneys to stop the suit, which claims that Trump is violating a constitutional clause banning presidents from accepting gifts or favors from foreign or domestic governments because of his stake in the Trump International Hotel in Washington.If the appeal fails, the Trump Organization may be required to turn over an array of internal documents, potentially offering a window into the operation of the business.The Trump International, on Pennsylvania Avenue within sight of the White House, is the favored destination for Trump and first lady Melania Trump when eating outside the White House, and it has become a gathering point for Trump supporters as well as for groups with business before the administration.The Trump administration argues that the lawsuit is causing the President harm and would interfere with the separation of powers, according to court documents.The suit was filed in 2017 by Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh and District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine, who argue the Trump International Hotel's operations put nearby hotels and entertainment properties at a competitive disadvantage and that the hotel, which won its lease on a federally owned property before Trump's election, got special tax concessions.A federal district judge allowed the state governments to pursue their lawsuit in July 2018 against Trump in his official capacity as President.
