You may resume your procrastination. A’Deja's sister, Jalen and her father are also hearing impaired. Jalen had success with cochlear implants in the past, so on Thursday, the family traveled to Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.“It’s so exciting,” said A’Deja’s mom Patricia.Following the implant procedure, A’Deja heard her family’s voices for the first time. The toddler's grandparents were also there.“This moment never gets old,” said audiologist Shelly Ash. “It’s always so moving.”Cochlear implant technology has accelerated over the years. Now the technology can even be linked via Bluetooth.Kids have different reactions to hearing sound for the first time.“When we first start out, we’re introducing very soft levels of electrical current,” said Shelly Ash. “It just sounds to her like 'beep, beep, beep.'”For A’Deja, she was neither happy or scared. She was simply... amazed. Her eyes widen and her jaw dropped. She realized what it was: sound. And she turned her head when her mother said those three magic words: I love you.” 1018

he was a Democratic candidate for the United States Senate."I have a simple proposition here," Biden said. "I'm here to ask you for your help. Where I come from, you don't get far unless you ask. My name's Joe Biden, I'm a Democratic candidate for the United States Senate. Look me over, if you like what you see, help out. If not, vote for the other Biden. Give me a look though, ok?"South Carolina is a state where Biden has been the clear favorite for months, but an NBC News/Marist poll from Monday has his lead over Senator Bernie Sanders down to 4 percent.South Carolina's primary is Saturday.According to the Associated Press, through three states so far, Sanders has the most delegates with 45, Pete Buttigieg is second with 25 and Biden is in third with 15.South Carolina is the last state with a primary before Super Tuesday, where 14 states plus American Samoa cast their votes. The Democratic candidates will debate Tuesday night ahead of the South Carolina election. This story was originally published by staff at WFTS. 1033

You’ve heard the presidential candidates fight it out. We’ll probably keep hearing from them for quite a while, no matter what the result is.But if you kept voting down your ballot, you probably voted for representatives to your state government. And this year, some people thought more than a handful of statehouses could flip from one party to another.Across the country, Democrats had the chance to flip 10 statehouses on election night, but six of the 10 remained under GOP control, while four are still counting results and remain too close to call.“There are still states that are counting so I don’t think we’re going to know the final numbers, but from what I’ve seen so far, it doesn’t seem like Democrats are kind of getting the statehouse wins that they were hoping for. My best guess at this point is Republicans will control the majority of statehouses once all the vote are counted,” said Sarah Chattfield, a political science professor at the University of Denver. She’s been watching the statehouse races.Statehouses have a ton of impact on state laws, budgets for important programs and schools, and they draw the lines for election districts every 10 years.“This year, we all just finished out the census and as a result of that, states are going to be redrawing their legislative districts. Some states do that with an independent commission, but the most common way is the state legislature redraws those districts,” said Chattfield.Every 10 years in the US, we redraw our legislative districts based on population. In many states, it becomes political.“If your party is in control of the state legislature, you can then draw districts to benefit your party,”So, the stakes were extra high this year. But in addition to redistricting, states control the state laws that impact the people in their states from speeding tickets to abortion to school funding to election laws, which we are seeing have a very real impact on the presidential race.“A huge amount of variation across the states in whether you’re in an all-mail state, or states where there’s very little absentee balloting and people have to show up. All of those are things that states are able to control,” said Chattfield. The impacts from the 2020 election across statehouses will shape the futures of many Americans for about a decade to come. 2335

due to engine failure on Monday. The plane made a safe emergency landing in Raleigh, North Carolina about an hour into the flight from Atlanta to Baltimore."The Captain came on the loudspeaker and said that we had lost an engine and that they were making preparations to have an emergency landing," passenger Jose Bahamonde-Gonzalez said.Avery Porch was sitting next to her boyfriend Tyler Kreuger in the emergency seat."After we heard the boom we just saw all this smoke come up into the cabin, and that's when we really started freaking out," Porch said. "It started slowing down a bit the air cut off."People were frantic--preparing to open the door at a moment's notice to try and escape."I was about to the first person to jump off and I was like, 'oh my gosh,'" Porch said. "This is a 30-something pound door. I'm going to have to throw it in the seat and jump off and actually help people out."Panicked people started to fear the worst."I pulled out my phone, and I know I didn't have service," Kreuger said. "I just texted my mom 'I love you', I texted my dad 'I love you.'""I had a weird, eerie sense of calm over me, like I almost knew that they were going to take care of it, and they did," Porch said. "I don't think I'd be timid getting on a plane again being reassured that they handled it the way they did."Delta released a statement apologizing for the inconvenience and passengers said they were given a food voucher while they waited to leave Raleigh."Delta needs to retire those MD-80's, they are too old," said Bahamonde-Gonzalez.The flight was originally supposed to land in Baltimore around 2 p.m. local time, but the passenger didn't reach their destination until around 8:30 p.m.This story was originally published by Eddie Kadhim on 1763
