As the NBA prepares to resume the 2020-21 season tomorrow, basketball commissioner Adam Silver told Good Morning America on Wednesday that the league would “cease completely” if an outbreak of the virus occurred within the league.Silver’s comments come as baseball’s Miami Marlins has had a number of its players and coaches test positive for the virus in recent days, forcing the team to suspend play for the week. Likewise, the Philadelphia Phillies, which played the Marlins last weekend, have suspended several games this week.“it’s not an exact science because nobody’s ever done this before,” Silver said. “I think we have plans in place where we might pause, similar to what baseball is doing now. Probably, if we had any significant spread is immediately stop. One thing we’d try do is try to track those cases to determine where they’re coming from and whether there had been spread on campus. Ultimately, I think we would cease completely if we saw that it was spreading around the campus and something more than an isolated case was happening."Unlike baseball, basketball has kept its players in a “bubble” in Orlando, Florida. Even though the virus is circulating through the state, the latest round of COVID-19 tests showed no players or coaches tested positive for the virus in Orlando. But that hasn’t stopped Silver from being anxious about the resumption of play. After all, it took just positive test, Utah Jazz star Rudy Gobert, to shut down the league back in March.“There is a high case rate in Florida down in Orange County, where Orlando is, as well obviously what is happening in baseball with the Marlins, so it is something we are keeping track of very closely,” Silver said. “We have confidence in this protocol that we designed… Everyone that is on that campus is tested on a daily basis.”The MLS and NHL have followed similar plans by isolating players. Both leagues have in recent days not reported any COVID-19 cases. The MLS had two teams withdraw from its mid-season tournament due to the spread of the virus, but has been virus free for two weeks. 2089

As President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence prepared to gather for their weekly lunch in August 2017, the President told his staff to add two more plates. Both men had just welcomed new chiefs of staff -- retired Marine Corps Gen. John Kelly and Nick Ayers, a 34-year-old Republican political consultant from Georgia -- and Trump decided to wave the pair into his private dining room off the Oval Office.Until then, a Cabinet member would occasionally join them, but the meals were largely a chance for Trump and Pence to spend time together alone, chatting about politics, policy and whatever popped into Trump's mind -- sometimes prompted by the television in the room tuned to Fox News. But in August 2017, the lunch went from a regular tête-à-tête to a four-man affair, one that became a more formal opportunity for the two offices to coordinate on strategy, policy and scheduling. For Ayers, Pence's new chief of staff, they were useful in another, perhaps more important way: he now had regular face-time with the President. With each passing lunch, Trump grew to know and like Ayers more, two sources close to the President said, allowing Ayers to build a strong personal rapport that could end up paying dividends. As the President considers replacing his chief of staff, Ayers has emerged as a top contender, multiple people familiar with the situation told CNN. Interviews with nearly two dozen current and former White House officials, former Ayers colleagues, sources close to the President and Republican congressional staffers portray an ambitious aide who has worked to insulate his current boss from the chaos of the West Wing, while also angling for a bigger job that would place him squarely in the middle of it.Trump has begun to envy the smoothly operating vice president's office, which Ayers has managed to keep distanced from the daily scrum and scandal of the White House. Ayers has cultivated key allies, including Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. He also boasts an impressive track record in Republican politics that could serve the President well in the run-up to his 2020 re-election.But Ayers' meteoric rise has also earned him his fair share of critics, including a few inside the White House. While plans were floated earlier this month for Ayers to become the new chief of staff, multiple sources told CNN, they have stalled amid the President's reluctance to fire Kelly -- who typically does the firing for Trump -- and the backbiting Ayers has faced from some of his West Wing colleagues.Several of Trump's top advisers have voiced concerns to him about Ayers, with some threatening to quit if he is tapped for the job. One of Ayers' top West Wing detractors during the process has been Kellyanne Conway, the combative counselor to the President who vehemently opposed Ayers' hire as Pence's chief of staff last year, two former White House officials and a source familiar with the matter said.Conway disputes those allegations, telling CNN: "I have zero beef with Nick Ayers."Outside the White House, former colleagues of Ayers say his relative youth and outsized ego -- conspicuous even in a world known for naked ambition and self-aggrandizement -- have rubbed fellow political operatives the wrong way. His allies say that people are just jealous or insecure."I think every job he's ever had he's been one of the youngest people to ever have it. And I think that's threatening to some people," said Alex Conant, who worked with Ayers on former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty's 2012 presidential campaign.Though he's only 36, Ayers has amassed a small fortune that, according to recent financial disclosures, is between million to million. That's been built up through financial investments, fees generated by his own political consulting firm and his former role as a principal in an ad-buying firm called Target Enterprises, which has served as the media buyer on nearly every race Ayers has worked on since he joined in 2011.The arrangement allowed Ayers to earn a consultant's salary while also influencing campaign spending in a way that benefited him financially, a practice that is not illegal but has raised consternation among fellow consultants. A source familiar with the matter insisted all of the candidates Ayers has serviced were aware of the financial arrangement behind his consulting.Still, his finances and involvement with political dark money groups could become political baggage down the road. One of them, Freedom Frontier, for whom he consulted, is the subject of two recent ethics complaints, the most recent of which was filed with the IRS on Tuesday. That complaint, filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, contends the group's political spending exceeded legal limits in violation of campaign finance laws.Efforts to reach officials with Freedom Frontier for comment were unsuccessful.  4901

AURORA, Colo – A man is giving a family a piece of their hero back after finding World War II dog tags on a job site he was working on.“They’re going into the mail today,” Michael Huber said in his office, surrounding by old photos and knick-knacks packed away in a box.Huber has all the respect in the world for a man he’s never met, but came across his name in the dirt.“Well, I was excavating on my jobsite,” Huber said. “I was getting rid of some trash and debris from years ago, and I pulled out a bucket and there was something shiny sticking out. I saw what it was and it was dog tags.”The name Gail Sheldon was engraved on the tags.“It said he got his shot in 1943,” Huber said. “Amazing. World War II dog tags.”Doing a little research, Huber found out who Sheldon was.“He was a captain and flew B-24 bomber planes,” Huber said. “He had several missions over Berlin, and he flew during D-Day. He was even shot down one time.”Huber was able to get into contact with Sheldon’s family after a couple of months. He found out from the family Sheldon died in 1990.Huber is now sending back the dog tags along with Sheldon’s pilot wings that he found with the tags. He packs up a box filled with old coke bottles and old squirt guns from that time that he found on the job site.“It could possibly be his family’s,” Huber said.Huber, who has also served in the U.S. Army, said he deeply respects Sheldon. Which is why it's important to send this memento back to the family.“Dog tags to me is part of a person’s being,” Huber said. “It’s a symbol of them giving up everything.” 1584

As the nation mourns the passing of Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republicans are holding a Senate primary Tuesday in which one of the candidates suggested the announcement that McCain was stopping medical treatment was timed to hurt her campaign.Kelli Ward, a former state senator who has courted the far-right during her campaign, suggested on Facebook Saturday that McCain's family released its statement saying the senator was ending medical treatment for brain cancer was timed to hurt her chances of winning Tuesday's primary.Ward staffer Jonathan Williams posted that he wondered whether McCain's statement was released "to take media attention off" Ward's campaign, which was beginning a statewide bus tour. "I'm not saying it was on purpose but it's quite interesting," Williams wrote."I think they wanted to have a particular narrative that they hope is negative to me," Ward responded, according to a screenshot posted by the The Arizona Republic. The news broke that McCain had died hours after Ward's comment. Ward's campaign did not respond to a request for comment on the Facebook post.On Monday, less than two days after McCain died of brain cancer, Ward tweeted, "Political correctness is like a cancer!"The attacks and insensitive remarks about McCain are just the latest in a heated primary race that has seen all three candidates align themselves with President Donald Trump, who attacked McCain relentlessly for three years, rather than McCain or retiring Sen. Jeff Flake, whose seat they are seeking to fill.Their decisions show how the path McCain cut through the Trump era -- breaking with the President on foreign policy, health care, immigration and more -- complicated his relationship with diehard Republicans in a state where the GOP electorate is now demanding fealty to Trump.Ward faces Rep. Martha McSally and former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Tuesday's primary for Arizona's other Senate seat. McSally is seen as the strongest general election candidate to face likely Democratic nominee, Rep. Kyrsten Sinema.McCain fended off Ward's challenge in a 2014 primary. Since then, she's made a series of insensitive comments as McCain battled brain cancer. She called on McCain to step down last year, calling him old and near "the end of life" before his diagnosis and said afterward he should resign "as quickly as possible."Ward closed the race barnstorming the state on a bus tour with right-wing media personalities Mike Cernovich and Tomi Lahren, as well as Rep. Paul Gosar."Are we going to elect another senator cut from the same cloth as Jeff Flake and John McCain?" Ward asked the crowd at a campaign event Friday, eliciting shouts of "No!"After McCain's death, Ward tweeted: "We are saddened to hear of the passing of @SenJohnMcCain. His decades of service will not be forgotten by the men & women of Arizona. May God grant the McCain family comfort and peace during this difficult time."McSally, the Republican establishment's preference in the race, has mostly remained silent on McCain during the primary. But McSally's omission of McCain's name when touting her support for the National Defense Authorization Act, which was named in McCain's honor, when McSally joined Trump at a signing ceremony at Fort Drum in New York, angered McCain's daughter Meghan McCain.McSally's "inability to even mention my father's name when discussing the bill named in his honor is disgraceful (just as it was with Trump)," Meghan McCain tweeted. "I had such higher hopes for the next generation of leadership in my home state."Throughout the campaign, McSally has sought to avoid any distance between herself and Trump. On Thursday, McSally sought to dodge last-minute controversy that could undercut her primary campaign, repeatedly avoiding reporters' questions about whether she considers Trump honest and trustworthy. The questions came after Trump attorney Michael Cohen's guilty plea and claim that Trump knew about hush payments to alleged mistresses during the 2016 campaign. McSally refused to address Trump, saying only that Cohen was "all over the map, contradicting himself, lying in order to save his ass."After McCain's passing, McSally tweeted, "John McCain was one of Arizona's greatest Senators, one of our country's finest statesmen, and an American hero who risked his life to defend this great nation. He loved this state, and he loved this country."I pray that God comforts Cindy and the entire McCain family. My heart is with them, and Arizona grieves with them."Arpaio, who was pardoned by Trump last year after being convicted of criminal contempt related to his hardline immigration tactics, complained in a since-deleted tweet on Friday that Cindy McCain had blocked him on Twitter."I tweeted out my thoughts & prayers for" McCain, his campaign account tweeted, and Cindy "BLOCKS me on twitter?"Arpaio tagged Trump and several news outlets in the tweet.The-CNN-Wire 4934
